Fabia 2018 DSG question

My 2018 Fabia will be coming up to its 8 year service soon.

It has a full service history from new and has done 43k.

I see it recommends a DSG fluid change.

Is this absolutely necessary?

What recommends a DSG fluid change for your DQ200 DSG? There is no schedule for that. You could go get someone to change both oils if they know what they are doing, maybe Main Dealership might be prepared to do it. Not all will. But the service desk staff might book it in not knowing what you actually have.

Dry clutches don't need a fluid change. DQ200 is a dry clutch gearbox.

There are gearbox specialist recommending that they do get Oil changes. Probably best to leave a working well DQ200 alone, especially at so low miles. @RickW was it you that had the failure with a Mk2 vRS that required a new MCU? EDIT. Sorry i remember now it was @AJR77

It depends on you. If you intend to keep the car a long time from now you might consider it.

I changed the gearbox oil on my wife's Fabia 2015, 5-speed manual gearbox, countless mechanics, DIYers, engineers told me this is unnecessary and they are correct if I didn't care about how well the car might go in old age and accept an old car will be not as good as a younger car and put up with it. I also changed the manual gearbox oil to very slightly improve the old crude VW gearbox design and build gear change.

I have changed gearbox and back axle oils on very old cars and been told it's a waste of time yet I have always found improvements, usually only slight but sometimes more so and always noticeable but those were cheap and easy jobs not modern scan tool required jobs that required plenty of attention and more time and patience.

If I had a DSG (I never would) I would change the gearbox oil(s) and get a good reliable VW independent to do the work, possibly one that works on modified or motorsports cars as hopefully they are used to such work and hopefully work to higher standards.

If you are going to be selling the car in the next year or three then you could more easily risk not bothering, or you could forget about it and the box could well be fine to the end of the car's life.

Do more research and decide for yourself.

My thoughts too. My local independent that I used for nearly 20 years uses the ‘number of heat cycles’ approach - which sounds similar to what you are saying. Running at full operating temp is good, it’s the mileage done while warming up that causes the wear. Our 2015 Fabia DSG has done 21712 miles and I too am wondering about a DSG oil change but it’s working fine so I’m erring on the leave it alone.

Some take the car manufacturer's recommended interval as a maximum rather than as best or optimum, and where there is no car manufacturer's service interval they introduce one. But all depends on some extent to car use and of course car owner's opinion and expectations and if someone else has to be paid to do the work then of course more additional cost.

Gearbox manufacturers may have different recommendations to those of the car manufacturers but of course have to be a bit careful about not upsetting the car manufacturers.
