My 2012 Citigo ASG vehicle has developed a new fault. After a few hundred metres driving the engine suddenly revs high (then drops) and does not change gear. The amber (not red) cog warning light is displayed in the rev counter area. I read that this could be one of several issues that a OBD2 diagnostic check will reveal. My local independent garage that I use has said it would be safe to drive it to them to run the checks but they are eight miles away and I'm reluctant to do so. I could contact my breakdown service as I have 'at home' cover and they could run the checks but I would still need to get it to a repairer, which COULD mean a specialist autoshop, the nearest of which is 12 miles away.

What are peoples thoughts on my options? What is the most likely explanation (just low transmission fluid or a terminal problem)?

Can you local garage fix a ASG if it need fixing?: Does your breakdown cover not give you uplift to a repairer. Drive Wheels off the road? The Automatic Specialist 12 miles away. It matters not what the codes shows to them. The specialist is going to know if clutch actuator, gear position sensor or just a transmission recalibration. worn clutch parts, fluid with dirt so contaminated, Failing gear position VX65 acuator. etc etc

Without it being scanned with VCDS or similar there is no way of knowing. An amber light usually means non critical fault and should be safe to drive to garage. If at any time it turns red then pull over and have it recovered to garage. If the car wont change gear or brakes down after leaving home then recovery if they cant fix it normally will either take it home or take to garage of your choice especially if either are within 12 miles.

I remembered I had 'Home Rescue' with my insurance so arranged a visit from Britannia Rescue. After a quick drive he diagnosed a slipping clutch. I had already called a auto gearbox specialist and their quote for a new clutch was out of all proportion to value of the car, so now looking at best way to dispose of it and think about a replacement.
