Wheel Bolts for Alloys v Steels

Featured Replies

Hi all, finally got around to getting some new shoes ordered for the girl. I'm getting a set of Hankook Ventus Evo K137 235/45 ZR18 98Y XL put onto the Pegasus alloys. I was considering changing out the locking wheel nut for just a regular nut? Which then prompted the second question, I picked up a set of Alcar 9021 17inch Steelies for Winter Tyres, do I need to run seperate nuts due to the alloy v steel nature? I was looking on autodoc to try and order some nuts as I didn't know how often they need to be changed if at all and noticed there were different ones for alloys v steels.

Appreciate your help!

Unless you damage a nut, or become rusty, there should be no need to replace them, especially if they are torqued correctly.

You can clean them with a metal brush if is superficial corrosion.

Some cars have different nuts between steelies and alloys, right, but not in this case.

Oh awesome, thanks for that! In that case do you know which ones would be recommended to get, I can't make heads or tails of the different listings on here

This I can't judge, all brands are fairly acceptable and known in the market (Febi, Topran, Swag, Ryder) ... I put spacers in mine summers (Eibach) and the kit came together with the "plus" bolts, marked Eibach but who knows who made them ...

Cannot say 😊

if they are original VAG wheels both alloys and steel wheels will use the same bolts so no need to buy different ones. You only need to be careful with after market alloys.

The stock alloys will use a radius/ball seat bolt. However, the Alcar 9021 look to need a 60' conical bolt.

Therefore, you will need new bolts to fit the Alcars.

Alcar 9021 are 17" Kodiaq MK1 steel rims, ie. 6.5Jx17 ET38 5/112 57.1 so use the standard wheel bolts with OEM part number WHT001812. These have a ball-shaped seat and are correct for both the Skoda alloy and steel rims.

Just a note - there are different sizes of ball seat.

13mm and 14mm.

The standard is 13mm so switching away from VAG you’ve got to be aware of ball seat not being a definitive term in itself.

@Carlston I wonder if there are multiple versions as this site clearly states the 9021 has a cone 26 bolt: https://www.atraxion.com/en/products/X1A4M/6-5x17-5x112-et38-ctr57-steel-alcar-9021-vw-tiguan-black-9021/

I guess it could be a mistake on their website.

I contacted Alcar and they said, "The rim 9021 is drilled with a 26mm ball bearing"...or at least that's the google translation of their German.
