Surprising mpg Octavia Estate

Featured Replies

On a journey from Cotswolds to Mid Wales (109 miles), I achieved 69mpg. Anyone else achieving similar returns? Journey was part motorway - M5, Gloucester to Worcester South - then Kidderminster, Bridgenorth, Shrewsbury. Cheers

If that's a vRS then it's very impressive 😂

The 2.0 TDI claims something like 70mpg, with the 1.6 seeing upwards of 80, apparently.

Currently getting about 63mpg or 4.5l/100km doing mostly motorway with some main road and town driving on my 2.0 150hp, oddly this heat wave has done wonders for the fuel economy, probably also helps that the schools are finishing this week where I live.

Thanks for the reply. Strangely enough, the hot weather seems to be improving the fuel consumption somehow! A more likely reason is keeping the speed in the 55-60 region, and using optimum gear change. The car certainly enjoys motorway driving! Cheers.

I am getting between 63 and 67mpg on a run to the coast every week (90 miles)

Octavia Vrs 2.0 Tdi 2014 Estate, which I am happy 😊 about.

Thanks, that's interesting to know. The range certainly lives up to it's reputation for being 'thrifty'. I might have a tough decision to make soon, in terms of 'what car next?'. I've fancied upgrading to a vRS for a while. Will give it serious thought now. Cheers

It's helpful to others to include engine details. Your profile only says it is a 2014 Octavia Estate.

I have similar year and type to yours with a 1.4tsi engine and is a manual. I get between 48 and 65 mpg on a run depending on driving environment and my demeanour.

The displayed consumption can be a bit optimistic, and you should compare to manually calculated consumption when refuelling for a reality check.

My past two Octavia estates (mk2 and mk3) have been among the most versatile, economical and pleasurable vehicles I have owned. I'm not enamoured with the current crop of 'electronic nannied' new options so hanging on to my current one for now.

Yes, I should have stated that mine is a 1.4 tsi. I manually calculated the mpg by 'fuel actually used on the journey'. The 'displayed' figure was an estimated 60 mpg, against the actual 69. Thanks for your reply. Like you, I'm hanging on to mine, hoping for a few more years of very enjoyable driving. Cheers

It’s great that your consumption figures are so good.

However, how are you actually measuring the fuel used?

Filling to “first click”, may be more accurate than the supplied data, however it’s not “accurate”.

I can’t imagine a manufacture would knowingly underscore their mpg figures by over 10%, any more that they would over score the figures in any way. I could believe that they underscored buy 2/3 %.

They do have a legal obligation to tell the truth (diesel and immersions scandals are hopefully a thing of the past) 🤞🤦‍♂️.

Of course, if your driving economically is warm weather on decent roads with minimal traffic. The figures will be great.

Friday evening, I returned home from Shepton Mallet via the A39/37 21 miles. Normal consumption 53-58mpg, depending on traffic temperature and time of day. The car recorded 52.4mpg on the way (hotter temps but the end of the busy period), and 62.1 on the return. There are hills, villages with 20 mph limits, traffic lights, and it’s a bus route. Not what you’d use to prove your consumption figures.

My point is your figures are great 🤩, but possibly only as accurate as the cars data.

As were mine 🤦‍♂️

I used to religiously record fills into an app and compare against the results against the 'since refuelled' display.

I've posted this before but when my 1.4tsi was brand new the consumption displayed was actually pessimistic (showing about 4mpg worse than actual) but over 120,000km the display has gradually moved through precisely accurate to now being about 4mpg optimistic.

I no longer use the app but I do perform a quick calculation to compare each refill (hopefully to a consistent level) for a rough assessment of display accuracy and see if there might be mechanical concerns requiring attention.

Actual consumption is down from new but I have a suspicion the current tyres (Continentals) are not the best for consumption as they are quite noisy now. At our current low annual mileage it is going to be while before they are replaced.

You make some interesting points. My method of calculating the mpg was 'leaving on a first-click-full-tank and topping up on arrival'. Petrol used against mileage covered gives a pretty accurate mpg. I used the method on the reverse journey too, which I didn't mention in my original post, and achieved 65 mpg. My car's in for service soon, but not sure it needs one! It'll be interesting what the dealership has to say. Thanks for your reply.

Not a great idea to consider skipping due services.
