Tailgate rattle

Featured Replies

I have a 70 reg 1.5 SEL saloon.

Travelling over any type of rough surface causes a rattling at the rear of the car. I have removed all loose items from the boot to no avail.

I don't think it is the parcel shelf moving around.

Could it be that the tailgate is not shutting tightly onto the frame of the car?

Possible causes and remedies most welcome.

Thanks,

Bobsko1

Try wrapping a little electrical insulation tape round the metal hoop that that the tailgate locking mechanism hooks onto - this solved a rattle in my two Superb estates and a friend's Golf estate.

It may well be the tailgate dampers - the spring loaded blocks. Skoda issued updated blocks to my rattly 2020 saloon - there had been a recall. Simple enough job to change if the dealer gets them for you. 5ja827249b Wedge buffer.

@Bobsko1 I had exactly the same issue last year, and it was the dampers that were the problem. Here's a couple of forum posts on the topic:

The resolution for me was to use a good quality lithium grease. The first product I tried only last a week before the rattling came back. The product I've linked to below worked much better, and I've not had an issue in the 10 months since I applied the grease to the dampers:

Hope this helps...

All,

Thanks very much for your replies.

Tried the tape solution - not successful.

Then used furniture polish on the dampers - working so far.

Not aware of any recall on the Govt. website.

Thanks again.

Hopefully the furniture polish keeps the dampers quiet. If it doesn't you may need to upgrade to the lithium grease.

Recalls such as this don't ever make it to that government website. It's internal to Skoda and the dealers. So you would need to goto the dealer and report the issue, and they should know about the recall for the specific issue. That's the theory anyway.

It would not be a 'Recall' Unless vehicles were being 'Recalled' or Keepers notified. it would be a TPI or TSB. Technical Product Information or Technical Service Bulletin.
