How do I turn the **** lights off?

Featured Replies

I've just taken delivery of an Octy L&K. The lights are permanently on when ignition is on. The only switch position that turns them off is sidelights (Then it's on sidelights only). I phoned the dealer and they said take it back, but as I have a PCP the dealer is 75 miles away and my local dealer wants to charge me. I'm sure I can get it sorted for nothing, but does anyone know if I can just save the hastle and do it myself?

You can't sort it yourself i'm afraid. Daylight running lights are a requirement in other parts of europe but not UK. Your dealer should have turned it off during the Pre delivery inspection using Vag-Com.

I think this is the new "Daytime Running Lights" That have been added, so we can all be like Volvo drivers. I Think it can be changed with VAG-COM if there is someone in your area

Damn Beat me to it :P

tut tut, dealers dont use VAG COM.

Wrist duly slapped there Ross but you know what I mean.

Contact your lease company (or Skoda UK) and query it as a warranty issue as the car has not been supplied correctly with UK settings.

Bear in mind that if the lights are always on, then it means that some of 'lights assist' functionality is therefore disabled. (With the lights always on, they can't turn themselves on/off with dark/light can they!)

Woss the point of paying the extra for a car with lights assist if it isn't going to work :)

I just received a L&K with the same issue, so hastled the lease co and the local dealer fixed it FOC.

Ian

Where are you based, someone on here maybe able to help.

Just go past the dealer TBH - should be FOC, and it ought to be a pretty easy thing to do with the VAG tool ;)

Thanks everyone for their help. Looks like a trip to the dealer. It's a pain as I'm going to France on Monday, so will have to wait to get it done. The only thing I can do in the meantime is put sidelights on. :-(

Actually light assist with tunnel light mode, does turn headlights off in daytime.

The point he was making is why have the light assist switch, if the car is set up so that the lights are permanently on like in Sweden, which is the problem with the car in the first post.

 Isn't that what Spagley said?

Tunnel mode will shut down the headlights when driving daytime.

So that is the part of light assist. When you order that part, it comes with the different lightswitch and menu items to maxidot to get home coming and leaving menus.

Light assist mode doesn't turn the lights off. Only turning sidelights on makes the headlights go off.

Am i going mad here? Spagley was correct because with the daytime running lights option for Sweden etc, the headlights are always on when the engine is running and this means the tunnel light automatic headlights facility of light assist will not function. He said tunnel light turns on the lights in the dark and off during daylight periods which is also correct. My head hurts. Apologies if i missed something obvious.

Yeah, Light Assist is it's supposed to turn them off when it's light, but if the car has been supplied with the 'Daylights' setting you always get headlights on when the ignition is on. As Silk has found, the sidelights position is the option for least lights !

I bought my Vrs as an import and it came with the daylight running lights. Went to the dealer who turned them off for £15.

As they are designed to come like that its not a warranty item.

But if it's a UK spec car, then you expect it to be set up with the correct UK options.

Also if you paid the extra to get a model with 'Light Assist' then you may feel a little peeved that it doesn't turn the lights on/off with the dark - in the way that the sales blurb describes it :)

It is not an unknown problem, almsot every uk spec octavia has come with the volvo lights when specced with the light assist.

When finally set up it does work properly, argue the toss with the dealers to turn off the sweden light as it should have been checked at PDI, if they refuse look at the vag com map and see if anyone near where you live will do it for you (if they can do the new Octavia that is).

my daylight running lights are off - but this hasnt effected my light assist....... lights auto come on in the dark on entry and exit of the car at night, and also fitted with auto lights which also come on when traveling over 100 mph - for (safe) :) brisk over takes.

Its when the daytime running lights are turned 'on' that it renders some of light assists functionality useless. If daytime running lights are 'off' then light assist can work to its full potential.

The auto headlights come on at night (obviously), when travelling at 90mph for 5 mins or more IIRC or when auto wipers are running full tilt.

You may have a feature for the '07 model year; I read somewhere that car owners with the maxidot display can (via the maxidot computer settings) switch the daylight running on or off themselves as well as other features such as turning the bleep on or off when setting/unsetting the alarm.

Check in the user manual under any paragraph discussing the maxidot/computer.

Alternatively, email Skoda UK via the Skoda UK website. They have been brilliant with advice to me in the past.

Not sure about the alarm beep tbh. My dealers techie seems to know everything and it would seem there is a reason why they won't turn this on for UK cars so I doubt the maxidot will have this option. Also daylight running lights is a legal requirement in many countries so it's not legal for Skoda to give the customer the option of turning them off. It could of course apply to UK only models but I doubt it as we always get less functionality, not more.

I've sorted the "Scandanavian lights mode" and the alarm, tone, etc on 2 seperate Mk2s over the weekend. Vag-com is cool... :D

Of course, I could've used a 5051, 5051B, 5052 or for the posh a 5053.;)
