Tyre Advice Required...

Featured Replies

I've just order some new front tyres for the vRS, I stuck to the OE tyres to keep a matching set, in this case is 205/55R16 Pirelli P6000.

I ordered them from mytyres.co.uk in a V rating, good to 149mph, the car has a manufacturer quoted top speed of 146mph.

Something made me check what the tyres fitted to it were after ordering and found they are W rated, good to 168mph... I checked the un-used spare as well to confirm they were the orginals.

Can't for the life of me work out why you'd need 168mph tyres on a 146mph car? I'm inclined to think V rated ones will be fine.

Unless you have the car chipped (or a previous owner had applied some mods), then you should fine. Lets face it, I doubt you will do doing 146mph on the public highway.... and unlikely on a track I guess - maybe down a nice runway though..!

Maybe when they were being the fitted, the fitter made an error and put the wrong ones on, or someone was just being silly when then ordered the W rated ones....

The originals are W rated, but as said already the V's should be fine for day to day use.

The reason is that the octavia vRS has a top speed close to that of the V rated tyres max speed rating. However, this applies to driving on a flat road, on a downhill an unmodified car can exceed this speed. A chipped car is capable of reaching close to 170MPH, thats hitting the rev limiter in 5th gear.

I've got a pair of those on the front of mine, were put on when bought the car. After 3k/4 months, (without hitting pot holes), have developed a bulge, not impressed. tyres are good otherwise.

I'd not rely on being within the speed rating on V-rated tyres for 2 reasons:-

1) It's not "as supplied/designed", and may affect your insurance positon in the event of a claim.

2) My Elegance TDi110 came with W-rated tyres (based on never been used sticker spare, not just part-used tyres on road alloys). I somehow doubt that was just cos you can't get a lower speed rating in a 205/55R16!
