Fabia VRs - What's this?

Featured Replies

Hello people, just had a look under the bonnet of my much loved Furby VRs.

On the left hand side, near the front of the engine bay is a black cylindrical object with four rubber pipes goind into it. (it's kind of vertical with the pipes on the top).

First question is : What is this?

Second Question: Why is there green liquid on top of it? It looks fairly recent and i'm going to Skegness on Sunday, any ideas?

The cylindrical object will probably be your fuel filter but not 100%, the green stuff is almost certainly coolant as your expansion chamber will be close by, just check for leaks with the engine running and give it a rev as well as it sometimes only comes out when under more pressure.

The green stuff is probably a bit of surface corrosion, due to contact with a small amount of fuel. You could confirm this by the smell of it. You could also try posting a photo to clarify "green stuff"

There may have just been a bit of seepage  , I would wouldn't worry too much but monitor it and if there is a substantial leak then see your dealer.

 I do truly sympathise here, but bad seaside resorts are not my forte. Are you being forced into it? You could try Bognor instead? :D

coolant pinky orange so it doesnt sound like a coolant leak , more like a diesel leak

I think my coolant is pink. But i guess it could be.

Your right I have just had a look and the coolant is a very gay pink colour, It would be too week to show up as a colour on something black anyway.

It could be Ectoplasm.

I would take it a photo but it's raining heavily here and all the water will go in the engine bay!

Think it's best to monitor it though.

Why it is whevever you think you've got a problem it rains so you can't really have a good look!

Skegness isn't really my idea i'm going with a mate for a corny day out, playing the ancient games in the amusments and stuff!

Went to Bognor once, but i was only young, didn't leave much of an impression!

I think it's surface corrosion. Just checked it again, it's a bit wet to open up and take a photo, but the green liquid is actually DRY.

The surface of the fuel filter has got a few grey patches on it and these are quite rough to the touch. So i think corrosion is probably a good call.

What would cause fuel to get on top of the fuel filter? Is it normal for a bit to seep through from something? Don't want the car to explode or anything.

Ectoplasm indeed! Who you gonna call, The Dealer!

Are you sure the green stuff isn't some sort of marker thats been there all the time? Just washed my Furby and had a wipe round under bonnett, checked oil etc, and noticed quite a few 'parts'/bolt heads with luminous paint blobs on them, no clue why tho  ?

That'll be there to see if things ahve neen tampered with... Honda do the same but with yellow paint. They put a blob on the nut and thread so they can tell if its been undone. ;)

I guess i could be, but the mark isn't on a bolt head exactly. Perhaps i've just never noticed it before. If so, what a relief and thanks.:)

However there is some furthur discolouration around the top of the fuel filter near to the marks, and this looks like corrosion of some sort. It's sort of rough and grey.

I wonder if someone splashed a small bit of coolant when my car was serviced in January, and it's gradually corroded the top of the fuel filter.

Perhaps the green marks are a sign of oxidisation or something?

They do tend to rust a bit, but they get changed at 40k anyhow so dont fret.

How bright is the green? If it is corrosion would have thought it would be really dark?

Thanks for that, will proceed to Skegness in Happiness now, then get depressed when i get there!:)

I thought the paint blobs were to indicate which nuts/bolts had been torqued up correctly during assembly so that none were missed. I've always done that when assembling torque critical components like brake pipe unions etc.

Yes, it does look like the top of a petri-dish! Green blobs and rough patches.

You may be right....

Are you using BP Ultimate diesel by any chance? That's dyed green with a fluorescein-type dye.

this colour orthis colour, you never know you might be cultivating something interestin :P[/color']
