Octy front speakers

Featured Replies

Not sure on those to be honest (although the second set do appear to be quite deep). A cheat for you would be to use the pioneer website that tells you what speakers of theirs will fit, then look at the speakers they suggest, check the depth of the speaker and bingo... you've got yer depth!

All I know is that the front takes 17cm speakers.

Sorry I can't help any more but hope that points you in the right direction..

Hi,

I have just fitted a pair of Pioneer TS-1785 component speakers to my mk1 Octy.

They fit perfecty , with no problems of depth, and the tweets fit in plave of the standard fit perfectly too.

I followed the advice I found on this forum and cut away the membrane, then used capet tape ( single sided sticky) to close off the huge gap between the frame and the door.

They sound MUCH better - the tweeters are silky smooth now- those standard fit ones are just junk! Also I disconnected the rear door tweets ( uplug the sencond connector in at the rear speaks)

Now I'm just waiting to see if the door leak - wont be long before a rainstorm....

BTW the Pioneers cost me

Was there any modification to the wiring on those Pioneers or were they a direct replacement? They look like just what I'm after. :)

Hi, i have just fitted alpine sxe-1725s 220w peak power into my mk1 octy vrs and they went in with no problem, and they have a good sound to them, they were also good value at just £30 from motorworld!!

All there was different was a slight modification to the speaker wires!

The skoda plugs dont fit the pioneers , you will need to modify. I cut off the plugs and solderd direct to the speakers. I did consider cannibalising the skoda spekaers to use the sockets on them. The tweeter is wired using the skoda loom by joining both pairs of cable at the woofer end.

I have just replaced the front speakers with some Pioneers, plus I followed the rear tweeter trick and the cutting of the door membrane trick. To be honest, the new pioneers aren't as good, they sound more tinny and seem to be distorting more and at a lot lower level. What have I done wrong? Please help as it is doing my nut and I can't spend any more money as the wife will kill me!

I did the rear tweeter and cutting the door before the new pioneers went in, so there is a before and after comparison. I cannibalised the connectors off the original speakers and damaged the cones in the process, so cant even put them back in.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thats odd mate, my pioneers are great. Did you seal the plastic holder which the speaker sits in to the door membrane? And have you got the polarity of both L + R correct - if one is antiphase then a lot of bass would cancel out. you can check this by setting the fader to all Front and then balance to one side, as you then fade the bal back to the center does the bass diminish?

I'll check SimonG and see if the bass does diminish. I sort of figured out that the + side to the cables in the car were the wires on the side of the release clip on the plastic holder.

Also, the rear shelves on mine really rattle. My wife thinks I'm mad as I have been sitting in the boot with the stereo on trying to eliminate the buzzes I get at different frequencies. Just as I think I may have cured it, another song comes on with another set of noises that make it rattle in a different place. Any ideas?

Dynamat etc on the underside of the parcel shelf, mount a piece of MDF under the shelf where the speakers bolt in if you can and some draught insulating foam or b shaped bead along the edge where the shelf sits :D

Sounds a possibility. Do you have any pics of yours done? It would help me a great deal as I need visiual help as well as words.:o

No mate i did it on an old BX estate.

The MDF is easy if the speakers bolt through the plastic shelf they are attached into.

The parcel shelf, literally just buy a roll of Dynamat or brown bread etc and attach it to the whole underside. If it looks unpleasent then staple gun some suitable parcel shelf fabric in black to it.

The foam is the window insulation foam, usually only available in white or brown (i chose brown). Just put this along the edge of the parcel shelf or the plastic bits where the sides of the parcel shelf sits when it is down.

HTH

Ah, I see what you mean now.

The problem is the speaker shelves at the side though, the parcel shelf is okay. The rattles are coming from either side in the trim running up the inside of the pillars in the boot. I have gone as far as undoing each screw holding the plastic shelves on and inseting a rubber bush to dampen the vibrations. This has helped a great deal and I'm going too far I know, but I have never had such a rattly interior on any car before.:(

If anyone had soundproofed the front doors, your advice would also be welcome.

Cheers,

Andrew.

ok put the speaker into an MDF ring and screw the MDF ring with some insulating foam on the top of it into the plastic.

This will help the speakers sound better and reduce vibration of the plastic.

Then apply dynamat to the underside of the plastic shelves either side, the insulating foam etc on the sides, where the shelf sits in is optional but may reduce other vibrationss.

Soundproofing the doors is an interesting one on the Octy, but i belive somebody on here did fourskins or something by that name behind the speakers. You could always swap the spacer rings for MDF versions if you are after chrisper bass notes.

What about rear speakers on an estate got a set of JVC 6x9 from old car but did think of making MDF side door panel which you access cd changer.

Has anyone done this was it any good?

I put speakers in a custom MDF parcelshelf when I first got the car but it killed the tailgate struts in a very short time, techy at the Skoda garage said that they are only just up to lifting the tailgate never mind the weight of the speakers and MDF Shelf.....

I fitted Focal Utopia 165W's to my Octy Front doors and loads of Dynamat, the sound is amazing and I you can fit these you can fit just about any 16.6" speaker ( not 17 as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, willl be taking them out shortly so will take some pics to show what can be quite easily achieved

Plan B after finding the speakers were not in the shelf solved that one :)

these are the front speaskers ive put in the octy

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/3917.html

they sound quality and are really shallow and no cutting of the door required

I'm missing my sound system from my old car already! I had infinity components in the front doors but couldn't find the stock speakers I took out so let them go with the car - probably would not have fitted anyways.

These will fit a new Octy elegance estate OK? Is the door trim easy to remove - assuming you have to to change the tweeter/crossover etc?

I also have a 5 channel amplifier that I salvaged but I remember when I did the upgrade that the front speakers were the most noticable quality jump of the upgrades. I'm hoping I'll be able to live with just a speaker upgrade as pulling a new car apart for amplifier wiring is a bit daunting!

Finally got round to putting the Pioneers in - I used speaker wiring adapters so I can easily put the originals back in when I sell on. I pulled the tweeter cable down behind the membrane and connected to the woofer. The passenger side had already been 'modified' by cutting by a previous owner - i've had no leakage issues but will closely monitor this over the coming weeks.

The sound difference is amazing. I'm very pleased with the results - I'd keep the standard head unit but want something that plays MP3s and has bluetooth handfree, like the Pioneers or Becker Grand Prix. Time to save some pennies tho :D

Cheers for all the advice in this thread - very usefull.

My answer to the poor quality speakers in the octy... fitted speakers from golf MKIV.... 1000x better

Are they the standard MK IV golf ones or the bose/whoever versions Richard

What was the cost also?
