18" wheels

Featured Replies

Hi,

New to the forum and have a quick question.

I have decided to have a vrs as a company car but need to decide on options to have. Now I test drove the vrs last weekend so had it for four says and 400

+ miles. I was impressed by the build quality and even the performance. One thing I did notice however was how high the car sits. The car I had was on 17" wheels and it handled pretty well. So the question is do the 18" wheels a make a difference to the hadling and to how high the car sits??

Any views/experience appreciated.

Cheers,

Neil

I can't vouch for the handling but as far as looks it fills the arches a bit more.

the 17's and 18's are the same width I think but the diameter differs

the 17's use /50 profiles and the 18's use /40

so the actual rolling radius is the same on both wheels so I would also assume because of this the car sits pretty much the same?

but the 18's look better :D (just my opinion seeing as got them)

The car on 18's will sit higher - there are no suspension mods to adjust the height.

Personally mate, i would go for the 18"'s - got the 17" ones on mine and wish i went for the bigger ones.

Mine you in my option the bridgestone tires they put on the 17"'s are better than the continentals on the bigger wheels.

The car will sit at the same height regardless of the size of the alloys. The 18"s have lower profile tyres therefore the rolling radius of the wheel, and the radius from the centre of the hub to the edge of the tyre, is the same.

It does sit higher........

I've got 17" wheels, I wanted the 18" but not the expense. Now having read this thread and finding out that the wheel and tyre together have the same radius I'm glad I went for the 17", I always thought that bigger wheels would fill the wheel arches more but in this case that appears not to be so.

Bigger alloys will appear to fill the arches better, since there's less black and more silver.

But, technically, there's still the same amount of round stuff in the arches. And yes , the 18s sit at the same height as the 17s.

18s give the appearance of filling the arches better for reasons noted. Therefore job done :)

300 notes for a change to 18s was a very reasonable option price, I thought. Golfs, Leons, A3s all get away with 17s but they look lost on a vRS. Maybe it's the style. The 17s (that come with with optional sports suspension) of other Octy models don't suffer so much.

The eye of the beholder and all that :)

Mind you in my opinion the bridgestone tyres they put on the 17"'s are better than the continentals on the bigger wheels.

That may be so but Skoda now fit Dunlop Sport Max to hte 18" profile which look pretty good but I don't know how they perform.

Maybe you should consider the amount of road noise, 18 inch wheels with lower profile tyres = more road noise. Stick to 17 inch if you want a quieter ride.

Meh, if I was interested in refinement I would not have bought the vRS :D

if you do go for the 18" try and get the anti kerbing tyres they cost more but in the long run they stop you having to have the wheels reconditioned which can add up

on the same note the lower the profile of the tyre the more likely you are to get kerb damage

Frankly that is bit of a sweeping statement and although logical isn't actually the case. I've driven cars with both 17's & 18's and I couldn't notice any audible difference in fact both were considerably more refined and less audible than the MkI vRS.

It does sit higher........

Would you like to expand on that and explain to everyone your reasoning for this belief?

Agree that there is more metal on view so will appear more attractive, however the distance from the rubber edge to the wheel arch will be the same so no more of a "filling effect" which is what I thought I would have been buying with 18"ers......anyway I'm only jealous:)

Go for the 18s...
