Don't like Supermarket Petrol...?

Featured Replies

Very interesting.. 10% power difference

wow sweet ones.

Is this stuff for sale yet in Tesco?

Those Dyno Dynamics rollers are good, we used those at the Southern Rolling Road meet last year. There is a local place near here just having a set fitted :D

10% difference between the 99RON and the crappy 95RON..

A difference more worthwhile knowing about imho would be 'super unleaded' vs 'ultimate/vpower' vs '99 RON'

Even my old Pug 205 didnt like 95 RON fuel, it required SUL or it wouldn't run very well at all. Not exactly a racer with a 1.2 engine but a very notable difference, and it would ping too.

Just wish they'd do the same for derv one day, comparing say Shell 'regular' vs 'vpower/extra', with and without Miller additives perhaps?

What kinda price difference is there between the Tesco 99RON and the BPU/ShellVpower stuff in the UK, out of interest? It's interesting a supermarket will be able to supply higher RON fuel then the more traditionally branded places though, and it should please a fair few tuned (petrol) vRS drivers

Standard fuel here is 91RON and most petrol stations only have 91 and 95.

One of the guys on a local forum lent his 1.8t Golf to his missus and she filled it with 91. The result was not good!

Sounds like Manny filling with normal unleaded (as he always did) on a trip to the Ring. Trouble is, German "normal" unleaded is 93  Rougher than a badger's bottom :D

I remember it well, smoked quiet nicely at well into 3 figures mph.

Thanks for the link. The results seem to support the subjective experience, although I am not so sure about the reasoning with respect to mixture richening using 95 RON fuel. The MR2 liked Tesco 99 best of all the fuels, but the new V-Power seems to suit it better still.

I reckon a lot of the variation is down to how the fuel suits a particualr car.

Chris

I seem to remember evo magazine did a fuel test using a mk5 Golf GTI. I shall have to dig it out rather than misquote.

5th gear did the same with a Scoob, GTi and a Twingo (i think). The GTi and scoob showed differences, the twingo diddnt.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

has been for ages ben, i've been running it for a long time now.

also in oxford its only 93p a litre!! :D

the test was optimax Vs ultimate Vstesco 99 Vs regular 95

but v-power wasn't out at the time :)

Auto Express tested a 1.2 Polo, Astra VXR and something else on 95, 97 and 99 and only the Astra showed an improvement on the 97 and 99. The Polo and other car produced LESS power on higher octane fuels because their ECUs did not adapt to it.

If the manual says use it then do, if it doesn't mention it you might be going slower and paying more

Hmm im still dubious (sp?)

Yes they are supermarket fuels but does the Tesco 99 stuff go bad like Optimax and im assuming V-Power?

I mean there is no Tesco near me but when ive been past those that so sell it your normal bloke wont put the 99RON stuff in as its more than the normal unleaded.

My nearest 2 shell garages are always busy with people filling up with V-Power so i know its not gone bad yet. Surely thats better for any car that benefits from a higher RON

i always use it and have never noticed a problem, in fact i tried optimax once as a comparison and and was rubbish in comparison. fuel economy dropped and the car felt a bit flat performance wise.

How long before insurance companies class it as a modification?

never, otherwise they will need to know tyre make/model, brake pad+disc make/model, air filter element make/model, brake fluid make/model, engine oil make/model, etc etc

it will never happen.
