Fabia vRS cut out and now won't start!

Featured Replies

Earlier today I pulled out of my road into a main road and accelerated away.

The car cut out after a couple of metres, so I naturally tried to restart it while I was rolling, which had no effect.

I've tried to restart the car since and it's just not taking, which makes me suspect it's a fuelling issue. It cranks over, but doesn't fire into life as normal.

On the dash I've got the yellow engine management light (static) and the glow plug light flashing away.

The car's a 54 place on 63k and has a full tank.

I've got a nasty feeling that I filled up with petrol - now I'm 99% sure I didn't but typically when in this situation you get all ideas floating in your head!

If it IS full of petrol, then there's 40 litres in there. I filled up on a virtually empty tank, then drove another 60 miles before today.

I'll be giving the local dealer a call in the morning to hopefully get it in for diagnosis but has anyone got any thoughts in the meantime?

Happy happy joy joy.

Can you open the filler cap and have a whiff? :D If it was filled from empty, I'm not sure you'd get 60 miles on it.....

Others have had issues with the lift pump in the fuel tank I think so could be that?

Good thinking - I'll go for a sniff now.

That's another thing, I do remember the "lovely" derv smell when I filled up...

What's the lift pump?

I think it's what pumps fuel out of the tank, but I could be wrong lol!

Yeah, I've searched for it and that looks a possibility.

I found the receipt from when I filled up, but it's only a card receipt - not goods ffs.

Thing is, it was BP Ultimate I filled up with... now was it Ultimate UL or Ultimate Diesel - both being a blue pump IIRC!

I've had a sniff inside the tank and it doesn't seem very diesely :( :(

What's the worst case scenario now - blocked injectors at £££££ a set?

Likelyhood of fuel system failure a few k down the road?

Could i recommend taking your car to a local garage and getting them to sort it rather than a main dealer.

That way it won't go on the skoda computer.

Does the fuel tank smell of petrol, if not there is a good chance it's derv.

Also I somehow doubt you would get 60 miles out of a tank is you filled up from almost empty as it will have mixed

You would need about 5 liters of uncontaminated derv, eg less than about 10% petrol in the derv, to run for 60 miles.

Who knows but hope it's not petrol for your sake.

I did read on another thread re. taking it to an independant garage, but the car's done over 60k now so wouldn't be covered by any warranty anyway would it?

The tank doesn't smell as much as I would expect from 40L of diesel but when you're sniffing your filler neck at midnight who knows lol.

Skoda do log information regarding mis fueling of cars on the databse and would invalidate your warranty. You may have a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty.

You really need to work out if it is petrol for sure. From what others have said once sucked out and flushed the PD seems ok afterwoods.

To clarify the warranty situation -

3 year / 60,000 Mile Warranty

Ah ok.

Warranty cover for your Škoda

So sure are we of the quality and reliability of our Škodas that every one comes with a 2 year Unlimited Mileage Warranty, with a third year of warranty valid up to 60,000 miles, as well as a 10 year anti-perforation warranty. Please see your retailer or repairer for full terms and conditions of cover.

So mine was registered in December 04, which gives me another 3 months on the warranty.

Yes you will have unlimited miles until December 2006.

BP Ultimate diesel is pale green, and doesn't smell very much of diesel.

I had a similar fuelling problem which was traced to a loose fuel pump relay, which needed re-seating in its socket. The relay is under the dash, somewhere between the instrument panel and the fusebox, I think.

The relay board is as you quite rightly say near the drivers right knee. Accessed via lowering the dash panel.

I just spoke to my local dealer and the car's also got AA cover too!

Skoda ownership just keeps getting better :D

Called them out so just the wait now.

Is there an access cover for the relay board or is it a more involved job?

No access panel as such, but only a few torx screws to lower it down.

Follow my instruction here - http://www.fabia-vrs.com/cruise.htm

From this bit -

Remove the headlight control, to do this grip the switch and push it in as you turn it to the sidelight position, this should release the latches behind it and allow you to pull it out. Release the two plugs, push them into the dash and put the headlight control to one side.

AA came out and read the fault code as a crankshaft sensor failure, so I just had it towed to the dealer and arranged a courtesy car.

Cheers Stu, but I don't fancy seeing mine like this just yet :P:P

I stopped off at the BP I used on Friday and thankfully the pump I used WAS Diesel (Ultimate no less).

:orb_phew:

I wonder how often crankshaft position sensors pop, and how easy they are to replace? With mine popping sensors left, right and centre at the moment, it would be nice to know this info, especially if when it pops it means an instant loss of engine....

How's about a game of sensor-failure bingo? 5 in a row and you get a replacement Octavia Mk2 vRS :D

I wish. Just replaced PAS sensor, boost sensor wasn;t that long ago, had a dodgy ABS sender at the back a little while ago, one of the front ones blipped the other day and made the speedo read 0 all the time. Which one's next.

Although I'd rather sensors popped than actual hardware.
