Oops - failed MOT

Featured Replies

Oh well, apparently the Fabia's failed the MOT

- front tyres are near the markers (that I knew about)

- rear discs are excessively pitted. So guess it's new discs and pads

- Rear bump stops worn.

Question is, for the rear brakes, do I need a caliper wind back tool like on the octy to get the new pads to fit on the new discs?

Any other ideas?

If you don't have a lady with a Fabia and a strut brace handy, then I'd go with the tried and tested wind-back tool ;) Think there's a how-to on here somewhere :D

Chris

Guess mine's an MOT failure on the rear brakes as well. Luckily its not for 6 months. :D

I have a sneaking suspicion there is something needed for the rear brakes.

Hmm, also, I thought a retest was FoC if done within certain days... Maybe it's all changed now.

The MOT (Skoda garage ;) ) said they'd only charge £20 for a retest if I get it back to them within 10 days.

Also, I guess I may have been slightly "hard done by" because knowing it's modified car, they've been picking out absolutely everything that could possibly go wrong. If I'd been to another mod-friendly MoT, maybe it would have passed.

I'm not complaining really, I know I need to get some new discs / pads anyway. The car's braking fine, and last time I checked, the discs weren't that bad.

Hohum

P.S I'll get on the phone to eurocarparts. Any other recommendations for suppliers of rear discs / pads ? I'll ask the Skoda dealer, but wonder what they'll quote me.

Yep, you will need the wind back tool. Also make sure you have a sturdy allen key (or a good allen socket) to get carrier bolts off. What I did was place the wheel nut wrench over the allen key to give me more leverage and really pull to get the bolts loose. My first attempt at just pulling on the allen key ending with very sore hands and a very bent allen key.

The Skoda approved discs and pads aren't that expensive actually. Think it is around £60-£70 in total.

Can you really fail an MOT for perished bumpstops?

P.

If its any conselation... mine passed :P

The MOT (Skoda garage ;) ) said they'd only charge

The bump stops are nice an easy to change and they shouldn't be too expensive.

I'm pretty sure the disks and pads are pretty reasonable too.

For what its worth just changed front and rear pads on Octavia RS mk1

specific Allen key with socket attachment recommended for front Calipers

Wind back tool was needed for rear caliper piston, spanners for removing caliper

OE pads from dealer were about

Discs and pads are less than £40+VAT for some ATE ones. I have ATE on the front and they're great

Chris, I guess the free retest is only for those categories mentioned.

I've just read through the failed certificate and apparently my handbrake efficiency is only 9% Seems to stop and break the car fine, although you do need to pull it right up.

I've left a message with Nick C regarding the brake winding tool. If anyone has one I can borrow, or fancies getting together to change some discs and pads over the weekend, let me know

I don't have a brake winding tool in my armoury I'm afraid Xav, but there is always room for a new tool. The weekend is pretty tight for me although I should be around tomorrow afternoon if that helps.

that was the question i was going to ask , is it a testable item , and how do they check them as they are covered up ?

They are visible on the rear of the Fabia.

yep you are of course right Stu , i just thought they were covered up by the dirt shield , pleasant warm evening outside when i just checked for my own piece of mind

Bumpstops are NOT part of the MOT. They can be split apart, missing or whatever and they cant fail it.

I'm sure the retest in 14 days is free as the £45 is only an admin fee too.

Bumpstops weren't marked in the official report of failure.

I have near side tyre, rear discs too pitted and handbrake only 9% efficient.

Thanks for the offer Stu. I guess without a proper tool, it's just too much of a pain to lever / try other things.

I did ring various motorfactors, but no one had one in stock and although eurocarparts could get one for about £25, it seems a bit pricey for a one off

I'll try and get the discs / pads tomorrow morning on the way in to work. Tyres will be sorted this weekend or I'll do a Micheldever special run at lunch and queue for hours.

You can get the tool pretty cheaply from Halfrauds etc.

yeah about

£12 at my local halford when i went to do the the job.

The thing was a laser tool.

re-map, re-map, re-map:rofl:

As Ross says it cant fail on bump stops.... Xav you may have other problems if your park brake only gave you 9%:thumbdwn: It could of course be down to badly worn pads on those discs but just make sure everything is clean and rust free when you put it back together I.e the hub faces should be mirror clean before fitting the discs back on....I do have a wind back tool both at work and at home :P

Free retest is only if car is returned next day and only on limited items...

Phil P.S i failed Q`s in the week as well:rofl:

And you've not been added to the ban list?

Going to get some discs for mine from a motor factors at some point tomorrow. Hopefully fit them the same day. Have some pads I got for a couple of quid off Ebay a while back. I like the fact the rears don't need to be super duper powerful.

And you've not been added to the ban list? .

No i`ve got a "get out of ban free card"

Thanks Q:D

Phil
