What broadband should I get?

Featured Replies

I have finally managed to cancel my broadband with talktalk! I need to get back online asap, I dont want to go with bt or aol.

Any reccomendations?

I think i'm going to try Sky next, but a letter just dropped through the door from Orange Broadband (used to be Wanadoo) offering me some seriously tempting deals as an Orange customer.

Ive read something on here regarding sky broadband that you can only use the sky router that comes with the pack, I want to use my own wireless router.

Im looking for speeds up to 8mb and at least 30gb download limit.

Another thing. Originally when I was transferring from bt to talktalk I was told from talk talk to get a mac code. Now the bt broadband was cancelled way before the talktalk broadband was supposed to have started.

As far as I am aware the mac code migrates the broadband over seamless so you dont get disconnected, but in this situation I did not think a mac code was required as there was no bt broadband service to migrate over because it was disconnected. Am I correct in saying this? And am I correct in saying I do not need a mac code to start with a new provider?

As I understand it you don't need to be a sky customer but you will get a preferential rate if you already are. I believe they have had a lot of demand, just as Orange and TalkTalk have with their recent launches (or rebranding/relaunch).

The 16Mb speed is interesting and that might be why they are stating you have to use their router as existing hardware might not be up to that speed so would effectively throttle your connection. As they offer it on the standard BT phone line it's probably worth double checking any speed claims against the BT broadband checker which is available through Welcome to bt.com If BT can't offer you the speed I doubr anyone supplying broadband through a BT line could go that high. However, I may be wrong.

Go with Tiscalli! Very cheap and Reliable i pay

I will be moving from PlusNet ASAP, as the service has gone right down the toilet over the last 2 months. Thats what they get for using Tiscalli as their new service provider :(

Im looking at Zen Internet to relace them.

I've been using Zen Internet at home for three years now, and have also used one of their office packages for work. Their service has been brilliant. I've had one problem in those three years (line fault at my end), which was solved by them quite promptly. Can't fault them at all... I would struggle to recommend anyone else to be honest.

Been using Plusnet for longer than I can remember and never had any problems (aside from when BT drilled through my phone line ) Currently on 8Mb for 21 quid which seems pretty competitive :D

My only complaint currently is the "fair usage" policy but that seems to be common to most providers. Will be investigating Sky broadband when it becomes more widespread :D

Chris

Tiscali is pretty cr@p at the moment , disconnecting being a constant problem esp last couple of weeks whilst i've been off , probably down to all the upgrades they're doing to get their 8mb up and running

A month ago I would have said plusnet ....but it keeps dropping out and the service is terrible....in 11months time I will be looking for someone else

Anything to do with the DSL switch over is it?

I'm going for Sky BB myself. The wifi side of the router they give you is really **** by all accounts but you can always add a wireless adapter of your own to it. The reason why you have to use their router is because your username and password are pre-programmed into it and you can't find these out from the setup screen like with all other routers. However, i understand there's a hack which gets round it thus allowing you to use your own modem/router. Use of the hack as always is at your own risk of course.

The MAC code I'm assuming means the MAC address of your network card or router?

In this case the MAC code is the Migration Authorisation Code. Its the code given to the new ISP so that they can authorise BT to transfer your ADSL connection over to them from your old ISP. Saves BT cancelling the ADSL connection on your line, and also means almost no down time your end. :)

Yeah, that's the way I'd see it too... If BT have definitely cancelled your broadband service, then yeah, you would be starting a new service and a MAC shouldn't be needed.

The MAC code is the Migration Authorisation Code.

Not to be confused with the Media Access Control (MAC) Address of all network devices which is (in theory!) a unique id for that bit of kit! :D

See my sneaky and subtle edit a minute before your post. ;):D

Ahhh, thanks for clearing that up.

I would highly recommend Orange BB. Even better now its free as im an orange customer, but good value at £14.99 a month previous wanadoo price.

One downside is none uk call centre, very hard to deal with.

Only problem ive had was 6 hours of no access.

Wireless and talk is great to, free calls and a free wifi router, great for the xbox connection.

Oh and at 8MB to.

Anything to do with the DSL switch over is it?

Not sure what the problem is ....it will drop out anywhen it likes.......the router will start up and ..no BB access or it will start and the green light comes on (Saying Bb access) and there is no access ...it could be off for days ....service never calls back before 8 hours......and all I have is bog standard 2mb BB

Figured it can't be any worse going for 8 meg so I have put in for it.

Plusnet is not a good place to be at the moment
