It's nopt at the moment, as the weather was dry thought I better get the garden sorted for the winter eg grass cutting etc etc!

Will have a start on it tonight, probably just reading up etc.

I have bought 2 drives, 1 200gb and 1 320gb. Not sure what order to put them in, the idea is to have 1 for the photos and also have the USB HDD that I have as a back up of the photos.

To be honest I'm a little daunted with starting it now I have all the bits!!!

Popped to the local computer shop and they didn't have a anti static strap but the did give me a 3.5" floopy FOC!

lol FDDs are FOC now hey, was that the drive or the disk :)

What are the specs of the HDDs?

I would probably (assuming similar drive speeds) do this:

200GB = OS

320GB = OS swapfile and Photographs etc

Just use the case grounding method and don't do it in a room with a nylon carpet and you should be fine.

When you put it together make sure you keep the cables as well routed out the way as possible and this will keep things quieter and cooler due to the smoother air flow inside the case.

Have fun, I'm sure you will be very pleased when you ahve built it.

Just a note the CPU you want to put the tiny gold arrow on the CPU corner facing the chopped corner of the socket. (It will make sense when you see the socket)

They gave the the FDD (not disk) free!

This is the link to the drives, they are both same spec/speed with the exception of size should be the same

In hindsight looking at it now I may as well have bought 2 320gb drives :(

I bought some of this as I seem to rember that you need to put a very small amount on the processor when fitting, is this right?

Gonna build it out in my utility room, vinyl flooring should be OK plus the work surface height is good to work at and I can leave it half completed if I need to without the worry of little fingers have a look!

some of what mate?

If it is that artic silver gloop, no don't bother. If you put it on too thick it becomes conductive which is bad. Just use the standard stuff that comes with the CPU.

Usually it is a small; tube of gloop or a pad on the headsink which melts the first few times the CPU comes on.

IMHO a waste of money, the stuff that comes with the CPU will do a good enough job.

The problem with these silver things is that if a layer is thick enough, there is enough silver that when compressed by the heatsink the things become electrically conductive as well as thermally conductive. Obviously thats bad.

I would use what the CPU came with, and keep what you have for if you ever have to take the cooler etc off. Obviously if you have to take it off you will need to clean the old off and apply new thermal compound.

All the headsink compound does is to bridge microscopic imperfections in the surface of the CPU and heatsink, so allowing better thermal transfer.

I know i have seen evidence first hand that shows much less than a degree difference, such that it was close to the margin of error and this was using multi thousand pound equipment.

Thanks, I'll put my £2.50 tube somewhere safe!

How is it progressing anyway?

Did you see what i meant about the CPU only going in one way and the arrow and cut corner on the socket?

Ended up test driving cars today :D so didn't get the build started, hopefully tomorrow!

Get on with it, you only have reasonable time to make point that parts are duff. :P

Did you manage to bolt it all together ok :)

I'll assume you are having fun playing with it at the moment :P

Building it now, well just starting anyway!

1st question, should I using the ICE that came with the processor or the Shuttle?

Also what's the difference between PCI & PCI Express, my wireless card doesn't look like it fits :(

I'm starting to think I should have just gone and bought a PC from PC world!

It appears there is no graphics card in the model shuttle I have purchased, well certainly no where for the monitor to plug in using the 15 pin connector!

I havebought a PATA 320GB drive in error and the wirless adapter doesn't fit.

On top of that both of my keyboards are PS2 and I can't find an adapter to convert them at home anywhere (sure I had one!)

Oh well time to give up today!

Hi golf turbo wait around and i'll answer your Q's now

Oh and wher in wiltshire are you as I might not be far from you either.

Definately no graphics in the SD37P2 which is something I hadn't picked up on :( (there was in the SN21G5 and it was cheaper!

I now need recommendations on graphics card please!

Right...

The cooler by ICE do you mean CPU cooler?

If so go with the shuttle one as long as it was designed for the core 2 duo, as if it came with the chasis as that will be designed to work with the case to get rid of heat ASAP.

PCI is an old 33MHz 32 bit shared multidrop parralel bus.

PCIe is a new serial bus, with between 1 & 32 lanes each comprising of 4 wires.

These single lanes are bundled together to make higher numbers of lanes. It is point to point.

From a hardware point of view the two are completely incompatible.

The GFX card you put up is a bit faster and has a silent cooler on it, however it also costs more and may or may not take up two slots (You would have to check as some of these don't always fit in shuttles).

The one i put up is cheaper and you can just go in and get one from PC world, however it is slightly slower and has a fan. (The fan thing can be fixed by buying a different cooler at a later date mind).

EDIT:

If you don't game then this could be a good stop gap until you find yourself a card you are totally happy with.
