Bit steep really

The non oem versions always have been expensive. I'll be looking out for an oem ultimate edition when its available.

Having a look at the difference between versions... Ultimate is pretty much just the business version (domain support) with the multimedia stuff like media centre too..

i think the home-premium would be sufficiant for 99% of power users...

The price will come down. They always do, just wait for the rush to be over with and then grab yourself a bargain. Otherwise you could pick up a moody copy from Chavbay.

ive also been reading about the anti-piracy features of vista... moody copys will be hard to come by with security built into the kernal this time round... 30 days to activate then it will go into reduced functionality mode where you can only use IE for an hour at a time... this is also the case with the business edtions.. no more VLKs

Oh I'm sure Vista will never be cracked!

Edit:-

TBH, those prices don't look too bad considering those are not OEM versions and its a new OS.

I've got XP pro so not sure what version of Vista I will need to update it.....but I'll bet it aint cheap

Its the lack of VLKs that will mean we wont use it at work, as each pc is built from the same image with the same key. To install each individually will just take to long.

TBH i'd expect it to a lot more than it actually is.

thats cheaper than XP when it first came out i think, full retial versions of OS's have always been a lot of money.

HOW MUCH!!

hhmm.. OSX (The full and only version for desktops) was only

Wonder how many installs of it my MSDN Developer licence subscription will allow ;)

Chris

Seems needlessly complicated to have four versions of it! And there has to be a corporate deployment tool for it, they can't expect businesses to be wasted time doing one full installation at a time.

I know my company has planned to start use of it in 2008 once it's settled a little, and know for a fact they wouldn't consider this without an imaging/deployment tool - not when there's several thousand PCs to consider.

well i think its going to work differently.. Eg the VLK key will still need to be authorised.

Ohh look at the nice free linux thing and this much cheaper MacOS X thing.

Since Vista will pretty much require a hardware upgrade then you have OS X which requires a mac or linux which works fine on your current hardware and comes with most software you will need.

So why was it that i would buy vista again?

I look forward to getting my free copy of the posh version :D

Think vista still has a bit of a way to go

Edit to add: this is RC1... im just downloading RC2 now :)

11321.attach

Microsoft today made available a new test build for Windows Vista, the mythical desktop operating system of legend. It's called RC2, or Release Candidate 2 (build number 5744), and it really is only for diehard Vista testaholics. And the stupid.

Windows Vista is supposed to launch in January 2007, but seeing is believing. With Vista, Microsoft has bust more deadlines than a deadbeat journalist.

3 years ago I switched to Mac, after years at work fixing Windows computers...

I know which OS I'll be buying next year...

Mac OS X Leopard!!!!

10.x each new x adds functionality.

I mean lets just be hones here NT 3.5 and 3.51 were different versions

Windows 2k was NT 5 and XP NT 5.1

I am no mac zealot, but when you can buy a family pack of 5 OS X licenses for less than a single XP license i have no idea why you would consider XP or Vista

There isn't a huge leap from one issue of OS-X to another like there is with Windows , and if you want to keep current on an apple you'll be buying more frequent upgrades.

Also don't forget that these are prices for full retail boxed versions.

At the moment XP-Pro OEM will cost you about

Also don't forget that these are prices for full retail boxed versions.

So it's fair to compare it to the price of the full retail boxed version of OSX, like I did :)

And finally, to balance the scales even further you have to consider that Mac hardware will cost you more than an equivalent spec PC.

I bought an iBook as it worked out cheaper than buying the equivalent spec PC laptop .

I wanted a laptop that was fairly compact and portable... 12" iBook was

But OSX isn't available in retail and OEM versions is it?
