Cycle Carrier & Roof rack

Featured Replies

Got a 2.5v6TDi comfort and think it's great, however.....

Has anyone fitted a legal cycle carrier to their vehicle, that's fairly easy to fit, and not at a silly price. I've got one that goes on the back, but it covers the no. plate so can't use it I've been told.

I've been told a light board would solve my problems, but where would that plug into?

I'm looking to carry 2 or 3 mountain bikes every weekend and the superb now doesn't seem the best vehicle (tempted to upgrade to Diesel VRS estate and just chuck them in the back)

The best option seems to be to get a tow bar fitted, and get one of those sort of cycle carriers, but that going to be

I belive Kentish has a towbar and bike rack.

Cant you just bolt/hang another rear plat off it some how?

I've seen it done on other cycle carriers, and making up another reg plate will cost you about a tenner. Cheapest option, and I think you'd regret getting rid of the Superb.

Just my thoughts....

Nope you need lights on a rear plate and hanging it doesn't work at m/way speeds. For that you need gaffer tape ;)

Seriosuly get a towbar and use a tow bar one, you don't risk damaging your car they are much easier to load and are much safer too.

Plus you can still open the boot with it on if you get a tilty one.

Thanks for the helpful responses so far

Anyone got any suggestions whether you can DIY a towbar or do I need a dealer / specialist fitter, especially for the electrics.

Saw an interesting one online, where the tow ball is removable and then the fittings are completely hidden - may have to try some of the caravan websites - aahhh

I can confirm my ownership of Superb, swan neck towball system (Brink made for Skoda) and mount a Pendle 4 bike swan neck mounted ball bike rack. Fully loaded, the rack is stable, steady and rock solid. The lighting board is all on the rack, so you only need to mount a number plate and plug the elcterics in (after of course assembling the rack when first obtained).

I cannot rate this rack highly enough, and would never use a body mounted rack again.

PS You could fit the towbar yourself, and the Skoda electrics should just plug in. You're only restricted by your own abilities that you may or may not have.

Cheers again

Where do the electrics plug into, is there a socket or something underneath the car, which I presume then stay there for plugging said bike rack onto.

I'm fine with mechanical stuff, just don't touch electric's.

The Superb must be about the easiest car to fit a towbar to. Remove the rear bumper and crash bar, then slot in the towbar frame and bolt up in the boot. All the holes are there and no drilling or cutting of the bumper is required.

I used a Bosal towbar (to fit a Passat of the same year) bought new via eBay for about

Now got a quote, supplied and fitted including electrics:

2 bolt flange

Brink price looks similar to what I paid the dealer when mine was new. The detatchable swan neck is a lovely piece of kit (as far as tow balls go)

I've got an old Halfords "high level" bike carrier that I used on my old Omega for years.

Just been to France and back in the Superb with in on the back and no problems. The bumper had a couple of dent marks in it for a day or two, but returned to its normal shape - the Omega's did that too.

That's one fully loaded Superb mate!!!

I have the same cycle carrier on my Superb and have had no issues at all.

I've got a pair of genuine Skoda Superb roof bars sat in the garage doing nothing if anyone is interested? Fitted once when I took delivery of the car.

Thanks for all your help, I've gone for Thule roof system and bike carriers. Reckoned all in, that I'd be able to transfer it all (new feet maybe) if I got a new car, rather than the £300 sunk cost of towbar.
