As a bit of controversy, as i almost bought some new kit today, thankfully only managed to spend 200 notes on some RAM rather than a new platform.. but got me thinking where other briskodians "faith" lies... being a AMD fanboy myself, altho my latest Core2Duo laptop is quite a beast!..

what cpu manufacturer do you have in your current pc, and if you were going to buy a new cpu today, who would you choose?

had a few different AMD's in the past but have always found some sort of occasional problem with them and stability. we have had a couple of intel systems which are way more stable so our next purchase is going to be a core 2 duo setup :) probably a 2.13

Current main PC has an Athlon 64 4000 CPU. My HTPC has a P4 3.0GHZ with hyperthreading.

Ive had AMD's since ive had my own computers (i was bought a 486 SX50 once lol)

Until Intel brought out the Core2, AMD had them fleeced in Athlon vs Pentium stakes

But now Core2 has turned the tables, and leaving AMD to be the "value" opposition. But id stick with AMD if i were buying again...

Always gone with intl, probably due to more mass market appeal, was considering amd for next prcocessor as I have had serious heat issues with my P4 and probably should have got an AMD, however now the new intel processors are running nice and cool will probably stick with them.

Why can you not select multiple options? :D

(Main machine, have AMD 64, will likely stay with them)

Steve

I've got a mixture of AMD, Intel and PPC Mac's atm...

I'm trying to decide if I should replace the P4 3.2 with a Core2 setup or go all out and buy a Mac Pro...

My first 'proper' PC was a Cyrix 150 mhz processor back in 94, and it rocked! Seriously upset my m8 who had a DX2 486!

I then upgraded to a P2 400mhz as soon as it came out. Cost

First PC i486 DX33

Next PC PPro 200 (very shiny)

Then Dual P120,

Added a PII 350

The P120 was given to a friend from home and replaced with a Dual P450 and the 350 had the chip sold and replaced with 2 PIII 550s

Current family systems are a Mix of an old intel, AMD Duron/Athon, the old faithful Dual 550. Also a PPC Mac.

The ammusing thing is everyone raves about how AMD were ahead, but the K6 chips were absymal, especially the K6-3 which was canned as it wasn't stable.

It used to be AMD are cheap and Intel are stable or faster (eg dual CPU).

AMD now have a fast chip and for the last approximately year or so have been well ahead of the P4/PD with the A64. However people should have noticed that the A64's haven't been cheap at all and infact you could get a P4 for a lot less cash.

Now the Core and Core2 Duo are out AMD is going to be in a bit of a spot on the lappy/desktop market because they are no cheaper and currently slower too.

Add to that the Server chips are now using big power, at a time when intel and IBM and SUN are cutting the power useage of theirs, to me it looks like AMD may have had their time. I do hope not as it make intel work rather than sit on their ar*es, however they can't produce the volumes wanted, which means people who just want a fast PC will go intel again.

Some of the early Dual core core derived server chips I have seen and been playing with at work are seriosuly scarey as the whole system including 4 HDDs is probably pulling about 250W total when running.

I remember the ZX & ZX81, my mate had one, but I was a BBC B person myself.

I simply think it's come full circle. AMD have been ahead for a while, Intel are then forced to work harder to come out with something quicker and more efficient.

Intel then have the spotlight and start shifting more stock. Just have to wait to see what AMD come out with next!

Steve

Steve,

What i have seen of AMD's next product they are how can i put this...

erm very "Netburst", especially the future X2 or whatever they will call it.

What, nicking some of Intel's architecture design ideas? Surely not, that's never been done before ;)

Steve

Main PC is a amd2200XP+ :o Old, but still doing its thing totally 100% fine., If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :D

Nope more nicking thermal characteristics.

i think i've got an AMD chipppy thing in mine, but to be honest i can't remember, and the computer tele allways takes too long to warm up at the beggining so that i miss the bit that tells you what chip and how much memory i've got

Intel all the way for me - first one was a 8088 then an 8086 with CGA.....

My two PC's run AMD, an Athlon 2600XP and a Sempron 2600 64bit. My laptop is an Intel Celeron 2.8.

Some interesting comments regarding Intel Vs Amd, personally I'd go with AMD unless Intel seriously closes the gap between the two. Its a shame Citrix left the market cause I think a three way competition would have been good.

A64 3400+ in the main PC at the mo , though I am tempted by a Core 2 Duo (or Core 2 Quad if they are out) when I decide to upgrade next time

At the mo I have a Athlon 3800+ X2, seems good enough for me so far. I'll probably keep it for 2 years and then see who is offering the best value chips at the time.

had amd in the past cos they were faster and cheaper. now that c2d is out and intel seem to be faster, cooler and decently priced...it's a no brainer really :)

macs use intel cpus, so the screw them both and buy a mac option is redundant :P

This is more or less what I would have written had I been here a bit quicker.

I can't vote in this because I have a PPC Mac. I would have voted the screw them both and buy a mac but of course it makes no sense now.

From what I'm reading Core 2 is the way to go.

AMD now and have been using them for 7 years. :)

My Opty 146 is currently running at 2.8gig..

Because ive just bought 2 more gig of DDR for it ill probably get hold of a skt939 dual core cpu.. then itll do for at least another year (until Alan Wake)

got intel this time round, 3.6ghz

runs hotter than anything i've ever had before between 45 idle and above 60 under full load, had to re-do the cooling twice before i could get these figures. Fans on constantly keeps it around 55 but noise is driving me crazy and i cant underclock the mobo. In comparison i've had amd's in the past and they were all absolutly perfect, slapped em in and off they went.

I might not get amd next time but i'll certainly be concidering the core temps a little more.

Might have to get water cooling on this sucka.

I've currently got a Pentium D 940. Had an Apple MacBook Pro which was fantastic, but had to sell it to fund my flat deposit. Was looking at upgrading the board/CPU in my old P4 1.8 but we got an offer through at work so I got a seriously cheap Fujitsu Siemens with the aforementioned P-D 940 and 2Gb of RAM. Considering the wattage it uses and grunt it has it's quieter than the old PC. I'm now looking a cheap Core2Duo upgrade for it - Just need an updated BIOS...
