Cavalier GSi

Featured Replies

Did they do a turbo version?

How quick were they?

It's a 'K' plate one

With a big exhaust.

I can't find any info. anywhere.

Mind you I haven't looked.

Ta.:)

IIRC, it's just a 2.0l-16v engine and think it was the same unit as used in the Calibra-16v?

There was a 4wd turbo one I think though, but not a GSi.....

Chris

Turbo was called, Cavalier Turbo.

Yes they did a gsi turbo 4x4, with the c20let engine which is the same running gear as the calibra. Very fast. Really good performance bargains but be weary of the 4x4 transfer box.

That's the one then.

He tried to have a fight with me at 03:30 this morning.

He ended up stopped at traffic lights beside me with tears in his eyes.

And he was as sober as I was.

He was told it was the fastest cavalier you can buy..

It was the fact that I after he had cut me up and whizzed off, I actually caught him up and weed all over him.

I was late for work, and I do know the roads, so I had the advantage.

Pleasant young man though:D

( although

weird

Its was the fastest (along with the V6) Cavalier, but many dont run right due to poor actuators on the turbos so he may well have been down of power.

Around 200 bhp out of the box, but can do a fair bit with em.

If I remember correctly, if it is the same running gear as the Calibra, you had to replace all 4 tyres at the same time on the 4x4 ones else it munched the gearbox.

Loadsamoney to repair.

I may have frightened him slightly ( I do know the the roads after all:)

I honestly thought he would have left me for dead around the twisties, but the straight line grunt would have been on a par.

Mind you he looked about 12, and was probably bricking it, whilst I travel the same roads twice a day, and have more knowlege of my car, and more experience.

If I was him, I would have probably been through one of the many dry-stone walls, so, fair play to him, and I got to work at 03:58, 2 minutes early, with a smile on my face:thumbup:

Yup, lack of centre differential.

Yes I had one before my Octavia diesel!

Most of them are either knackered or max'd and tuned now.

If his 4x4 wasn't working (very likely!) he wouldn't beat anything with all that extra weight, no traction and barge-like handling.

0-60 6.4s, 140+mph 30-70 6.4s - they're on a par with a standard cossy 4x4 - solid rather fast by today's standard - working 4x4 is vital.

In mine (a good standard one) I never got beat by a skoda (even a vrs - but I don't think many were tuned back then).

It's the transfer box that breaks if you don't keep the tyres within a mm or two - I never had a problem. Exactly the same as the calibra - 6-speed box etc.

I opted for the V6 Cavalier, a very nice car back in the day.

There was the GSi and the GSi 4x4 - 150 bhp 16v 2-litre.

Cavalier Turbo was called just that :):)

Its full name was the GSI 2000

the GSI 2000 was a 150bhp 2.0 16v that came in both FWD and 4x4 but they also did a 2.0 turbo 4x4 with 204bhp along with a 2.0 L 4x4, probably quite rare the normal 4x4.

The original Astra GTE 16v, Calibra 16v and Cavalier GSI 2000 were very fast. 150(-odd)bhp was quite a lot in 1989 and the cars were presumably lighter. I was impressed by a mate's Calibra back in the day.

The grip and handling of a Mk3 Cavalier chassis was terrible though! Understeer and torque-steer was always a problem, even in the lesser models. The fast Astra must have been very scary!

I'm not sure what the 4x4 drove like, but I've also heard lots of stories about the transfer box giving up.

A K-reg (1992/3!!!) one must be a shed by now!

Nice, clean and tidy, and still capable of over 110mph in a short-ish stretch.

I was impressed anyway, although not as impressed as he was;)

its a funny looking bulb thing that goes on the 4x4 system fitted to the cavalier and calibra's.

The pressure bulb is the least of the worries.

The transfer box has an overly complicated multiple viscous clutch/pressure plate arrangement - overheats, seals go, fluid everywhere (and it's combined with the power steering!). Replacement xfer boxes are often 'locked' (i.e. the plates permanently jammed together) to avoid failure. A turbo cavalier with working 4x4 is a very safe and swift car, you can take ridiculous liberties and pull it back (although the handling is rather dull).

I only sold mine a few years ago and it still had all of it's go.

I also had an Astra GTE16v in 1991 (only about 1000kg v. cav's 1350kg) which felt faster (it was frantic, handling very twitchy). Difficult to get traction, torque steer etc. In reality on familiar roads at the same points, favourite corners etc. the cav was 15-20 mph quicker.

This was mine being sold by one of the many following owners who couldn't afford the repairs!

I had a 2.0L 4x4 Cavalier. 130bhp SRI engine. The most capable car I have ever owned, without a doubt. Transfer box? As long as the tyre treads and pressures were maintained, no problem.

One tried to have me a few months ago, I think it was really a 1.6L, with a very doubtful GSi body kit. Gold with far to may tribal Tatoo graphics on it, Burberry seat covers in baby blue I think, pulled along side of me then a P***ed it.

Quite sad really

My favorite car I have owned is a 94' black calibra. Bought it when I was 21 for 9 grand. Still remember going to the lady's house in some estate in glasgow with the money in a bag.

It went and handled far better than I was capable of.

I had a cav gsi for about 5 years and loved it,spent shed loads on it and then sold it for a pitance,i fitted the 6 speed box off the turbo, turbo leather and also junked the injection in favour of twin 45 webbers, was a great car but was a money pit

They did a 3.0 GSI/SRI (can't remember) which was a lovely, quick motor.

3.0GSI was a Carlton.
