XP 64bit and drivers....

Featured Replies

Trying to install my Neatgear WPN111 USB Wireless adapter on my new PC but the install won't complete, part way through it requires a reboot and is supposed to carry on install when back up but does not.

Is this down to the driver not being suitable with xp 64bit? If so whjat can I do! Tried looking on Netgears site but it's all but useless and the search on the site is currently down :(

64 bit windows needs true 64bit drivers. The normal XP drivers dont install. Chances are your USB adapter is just a rebadged something else. There maybe drivers from that source.

Ok! Any ideas how I find out more!!!

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea getting 64 bit!

If you have the Mac address for the usb adapter you may be able to google search for the manufacturer. The mac address is usually written on a label somewhere.

AGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

It appears that after 55 mins of talking to India they have come to the assumption that the device is not compatible with x64, I spent all that time tinkering with the install. The 1st question I asked was "Is it compatible with x64?"

TBH theres no point to 64bit XP or Vista unless your actually going to use the extra memory... its a royal PITA to get drivers for stuff, and youll find other things just wont work!

I read somewhere it might be possible to use a Realtek driver with the Netgear WPN111 but I have found one and using the install from Device manager it says it's not compatible :(

Anyone recomend me a USB wireless adapter that will work with XP Pro x64?

Did you try installing it anyway, it may work.

Tried and the installation software failed :(

I agree :( just bought and installed XP64, Now require a new printer & Scanner due to incompatability

Atheros chip based ones should work (USB):

Wireless USB Adapter - DWL-G132 by D-Link

WG111U - Double 108 Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter - NETGEAR.com

WG111T - NETGEAR.com

Obviously you would want to check these did have working drivers before ordering.

It looks like the drivers are a bit sparse.

Haven't even tried to installed them yet, I hope they will be Ok otherwise I may just bin x64 and put it down to experience and then install the 32 bit version.... (Cheaper than buying loads more hardware!)

Will have a look tonight when I get home from work.... Thanks for the links.

Thats ok, can't promise anything but if you have lots of problem then i agree about XP64, sorry i didn't pick it up earlier, but i thought the driver issues, while there were much more resolved than this.
