Hi Guys,

I'm going to change the gearbox oil in my car, as the change is nasty at low temps so does anybody know how much i need to buy and put in.

The car is a 1.9TDI 110 with 5 speed box.

The oil i was looking at is Silktran Syn 5, is this suitable for that box as I would assume it is being a fully synth 75W-90.

I will pay out local garage the £15-20 to do it as the drive home to get my tools would cost me the same in fuel.

The damn thing just seems to have got sticky until it has warmed up and IMHO 50k is plenty of miles for gear box oil.

Sounds like that SilkTran oil is fine too

you need a special tool to undo the gearbox drain plug, iirc it is a torx security bit, but i cant remember what size??

and autodata says it's 2 litres 75w/90 synhetic gear oil for the 1.9td

Can you let us know how that's going in a month or 2 please? I sometimes (more than I'd expect, esp given that I can get all the others with my usual racing shift) "miss" third, and I'm in 2 minds about whether it's probably 4yo gear oil, or that the shift into third is about the end of my reach so I should look at quickshifters.

Changing to Silktran on my 2002 car cured my sticky reverse within 1000 miles. You need to buy 2 litres of it.

Millers stuff was always good oil for my older cars and this was about half the price of the silktrans stuff. That plus i could only order the silktrans online, and then have to pay postage, which was not a lot of use to me :(

The millers looks to be comparable to the silktrans oil too.

Right the car is in with the oil over lunch today, so will let you know whats what. I rack the miles up fairly quickly so I if it is going to make any difference I should hopefully see the results shortly

Who is doing the gearbox oil change for you?

My 110 seemed to have gobbled up about 2 litres of LL engine oil since the last service (approx 20k ago).

Local work garage is doing it as they thought 30mins work with a flush.

They are pretty good

EDIT: Work done, the mechanic said the stuff came out pretty clean and was ok, but he would have changed ti to be on the safe side.

I will see if things improve over this week and if no then i will be looking to get the gear linkage wires adjusted.

Well about 100 miles later and the gear changes are better.

Still a little bit of stickyness around second, but i'm going to wait and see if it clears up over a few more miles before i get the linkage looked at.

Another nice benefit is that for some reason the car seems a little more responsive when you put your foot down. Now this could be the clean and therfore less thick) oil, or it could just be me. Either way a big thumbs up so far for the fully synthetic Millers oil.

Maybe my gearbox oil has turned to tar then.... :-)
