Lubricating door locks

Featured Replies

Not really a Fabia specific question - does anyone have any recommendations regarding the routine lubrication of door locks ?

Back in the "old days" it was just a dab of 3 in 1 oil. Is this still OK for modern central locking systems ? Or is WD40 better ? Or a combination of both ?

you can buy an aerosol can from skoda dealers with a little apllicator spout for doing the door locks/barrel

Every time my motor goes in for a service I get charged about 3 quid for lock lubricant, never seen the areosol thats left.....Perhaps it's a hidden charge as in the Enviromental charge.......................

Don't use WD40 or anything similar all it does is attract muck, get some graphite from a good hardware shop & just dust the key with it & then put the key in the lock...

graphite grease is abrasive

Not graphite grease, graphite dry powder, used for lubricating locks with tumblers in (Yale locks, Euro locks etc).

Trust me, I'm a Joiner...

my apolgies, just re-read that.......:)

Yes thats defo the only way to grease a lock esp tumblers....

As above WD40 attracts dust and muck and combine a nice sludge from WD40(oil) + Water(rain)....you get an abrasive sludge which wears down lock components. Thats why tumbler padlocks and door locks which have been oiled overtime become all loose and worn small springs inside are also not happy bunnies.

like this or egay it.

Tradenet UK Tools, lock picking tool, lockpick tools, mortice lock picks, tubular lockpicking tools,

i have found that these steps keep car locks in good working order.

  • spray a alcohol based degreaser into the lock, this will remove any dirt, grit that has entered the lock, do not worry about the amount you spray in, as any excess will just evaporate,

  • then spray a small amount of WD 40 in to the lock, as the name suggest WD stands for Water Displacement which means it DISPLACES MOISTURE. Oil & water do not MIX  , it is also a lubricant which holds firmly to all moving parts. WD also protects metal surfaces with corrosion-resistant ingredients to shield against corrosive elements (rust)

Doing these step on regular intervals will give you a clean, lubricated, & protected lock.

Can't remember the last time I actually used the key in the door lock!

Never thought about that, my key has never been in the lock.

But I lube the motorbike lock with graphite tho.

I'll try to buy some graphite powder tomorrow.

Just one more point. Lubricating the driver's door lock should be easy to do as there is a keyhole for access. Anyone tried to do the same for the locking mechanism on the rear doors ?
