power limit of standard engine?

Featured Replies

just wondering like, what would people say was a safe power/torque limit for standard internals and gearbox?

obviously i am well aware that many things need changing to make decent power such as turbo/manifold/injectors/inlet system/mak/map obviously/exhaust/intercooler but what would be a safe limit??

I have heard on the Passat World forums (I don't know myself) that the 1.8T can competantly handle 550bhp. I doubt this is on stock internals personally, but that's what I've heard! I am aware of at least one member who is only 50bhp or so shy of that figure. :)

not on standard internals and/or running AWD though ;)

personally i heard low to mid 300's for power on standard internals but not 100% myself.

yeah i though about the same bengie 300-350 and not to heavy on the torque

on errrrr another forums its agreed that 300 is the magic number on standard internals for reliablity over that and you dont know which way it will go

APR over in the US have a Stage 3 kit which uses a GT30 I think. They rate the power at 330bhp on stock internals.

I had approx 340bhp on standard internals....it's the torque that really matters....mine was limited to 427Nm because of this....standard clutch as well and no clutch slip.

I believe this last part was more due to way I drove the car though....I never did traffic lights GPs and was pretty sympathetic....Q did get some slip on the test drive but then he did aspin the wheels in the first 3 gears!

If you go for more torque then clutch and internals should be done.

Bengie - I suspect Adrian has a little more mechanical symapthy than yourself ;)

Nothing to suspect. ;)

I would say low 300's on std internals if you want to rag it to death, above that you need to be sympathetic or beef it up, Ive heard of high 300's on std Internals but I wouldnt be confident at that level.

re Transmission, I stripped 3rd gear on the RS Internals I fitted with 350 bhp & 496 Nm so the limits less than that

Stock 4x4 ratios wont give you the top speed that higher BHP can give, I was hitting the limiter in top even with it raised to 7800 at 160 mph

Clutch obviously needs changing, Adrian must have been really kind to his

I'd also say low 300's and keep the rev limit sensible. Also if you never plan on uprating the internals then go for an IHI rather than a Garret IMO.

the IHI gives loads more bottom end torque than the Garret so you will still need to upgrade the Engine to get the full potential out of it.

I had a rev limit of 7.6k...I believe....80mph in 2nd just before hitting the limiter.

Too much power to be traffic light racing....just spins away...much better to be progressive and then blast past a little further down the road. ;)

Yes..it was my understanding the Garrets give more top end.....swings and round-abouts...match to your requirements.

I agree but, from my experience IHI seems to come in more progresively and at lower revs so isn't too harsh at moderate boost levels. Going on the big turbo setups I've experience of on standard internals I personally think the IHI is the better solution. Also as you say there is more potential there should he wish to upgrade the internals later. My point was though the Garret's don't seem suited at all to running on standard internals so would be a poor choice if the internals are to stay standard.

Aye....I don't know anyone...on here at least...that's running a Garret with standard internals.

I've seen a few (not on here) and they don't compare well to IHI.

The information I've been hearing on the eliminator kits also isn't good, especially regarding costs which as I expected work out very similar to a 'proper' big turbo, but without comparable performance.

i think the GT2x kit gives a midway power for the midway spend from what ive heard eddy. but the bigger Eliminator can cost similar.

Yes most of the stuff I've seen/heard relates to the 28RS Eliminator. However when looking at the GT2X I would suggest some caution and compare the complete power graph to alternative setups rather than focusing on peak figures.

Agreed peak power means diddly squat when on the road, Mine hits peak torque at about 3500, its at 300 bhp by 4500, max power at 5800 & still over 300 at 7800. It all makes for a very drivable car. When my car was only running 250 bhp I could whip 600 bhp Supras in the twisties because they were just so laggy.

If anyone remembers the Skoda day at Brunters with the White Supra they will know exactly what I mean. a true 200 mph car but it would need about 20 miles to do it !

yeah know what you mean but i guess there is little around that will hike up the power for the price you can do that kit at. the gt2x kit seems to fill the gap between 240-280bhp before going to the IHI's etc

Sorry for taking this even further off topic but you should really get yours mapped with the standard turbo before considering swapping the turbo. With the mods you already have in place it will be a very capable setup and may then make a 'mid sized' turbo seem to small an increase.

Mine with a Full Blue Flame system, Front mounted Intercooler & a Jabba Custom map gave 250 bhp witha masive powerband & a really useable car just faster than a BMW M3 :) :)

yeah sorry for gong off topic but Eddy i know what your saying and im firmly set on remap only, turbo etc is out my price range and tbh is overkill when i havent even gone to the remap stage, i rekon 230bhp ish will be fine. as my car weighs ver similar to that of an octy 4x4 so should have similar performance :)

blimey, the thread exploded whilst i wasn't looking

thanks for the input guys :) so low to mid 300's power wise and low 300's torque wise :)
