At last, I've ordered a Pearl

Featured Replies

It's been a tortuous journey, but this weekend, I've finally been able to order my new Crimbo present to myself :D

The Pearl is a new (cheaper) version of the Ruby, and we're not talking precious stones here, we're talking true 1920x1080 projectors. For those interested who haven't heard about it, the product name is VPL-VW50

Sorry for the blatent gloat, but needed to get it off my chest after chasing up my "suppliers" for so long :o

Anyone local who wants a lil' demo when it arrives is more than welcome :) After seeing Casino Royale on Friday on the big screen (awesome Bond film), and being bitterly disappointed with the quality of the projection (focus was soft and sound was dropping out, not just on reel changes), it's great to think my picture quality will be better than the local Vue cinema :P

Ready a couple of cold ones, I'll pop right over Mate!

Will do

BTW, trip to Bahrain is off at the moment, pending sorting out a few details. Will keep you posted.

I thought you were on about one of the Hanso Foundation "Stations" on the lost Island there.

:rofl::thumbup:

Come to think of it, it's been a few weeks since I've seen an episode... Maybe the island's blown up for good :D

Sorry to burst your bubble but DVD & HD can't touch the resolution of 35mm never mind 75mm film. I used to run a cinema and DVD on a cinema screen with a great projector won't look good and the MPEG artifacts are very obvious.

As for the poor sound, that means that the film was knackered, and may also have been the cause for the poor focus too. I'd have complained and got yourself a free ticket for another showing.

There is no excuse for such a poor showing in a cinema.

Snob.

;)

You having trouble with your suppliers too? ;)

Sounds great - one day I might even visit to see it:rofl:

I think we'll just agree to disagree on that one :D

Whilst 35mm film arguably has about 4k resolution from the original masters, by the time it's been copied several generations, it's pretty average at your local cinema :( Plus you have other artefacts such as film grain, which whilst some may find it looks authentic, it's still noise :P

MPEG artefacts shouldn't be that obvious if the recording is done properly. I'll wait and see what it's like when I have it set up at home with "consumer" HD. Working with broadcast HD kind of makes it unfair. You can't compare 10Mbps with 1.485Gbps :)

I will complain. Of course, at 2 in the morning when it finishes, you never have any management around the place. I did complain to the staff who were still there at the end of the film, but the best they could do is "tell the manager the following day"

Yup, although I'm hoping there won't be as many people who want to buy this as a nice 32 inch LCD telly. Last time I checked someone "in the know", there were a few hundred available so fingers crossed....... :o

i thought you were talking about one of these babies!

pearl.jpg

this one is a pearl, but strangely enough they do one called a ruby as well!

got one of these at work, i hate them!!!

Used to run a cinema, trust me that a DVD looks awful on the 60 ft screen.

Besides you can't get SDDS for home ;)

Seriously though, a properly set up 35mm projector will stuff any home set up no matter what, and by the time you are into 70mm or IMAX the HD home stuff just hasn't got a hope.

Anyway, seriously nice home projector that you have, I assume you have a dedicated room for it?

we're still using the cinemechanica vic 5 at work for all our films.... i love films on 35mm, they look much better than dvd stuff

DVD may look awful, but HD material shouldn't and in its broadcast format is virtually compression artefact free and no noise at all.

Yeah, know what you mean by SDDS. The previous Bond film I saw at the cinema was shown with SDDS audio and it was awesome :D The jungle SDDS trailer was very good. I've seen a few SDDS processing crates at work, must have a peek at some point  At the moment, I'm settling for 6.1 with 7.1 speaker setup. Was watching or rather listening to lord of the rings the other day and it was spooky :D

Sold my previous PJ to a friend, so without a decent pic at the moment (have a backup 32 inch LCD).

Not a dedicated room though :(

That looks like a very nice piece of kit!

But I've just Froogled the model number - how much?! - so how much discount did you manage to negotiate? ;)

The cinema i used to run had a vicky 5, but we moved up to a vic 8 during a refit.

Out vic 8 was one of those used in the millenium dome I was told :)

unfortuantely we are not actually a cinema, we are a theatre/concert hall so we dont get the latest films, we can only get them about 3 months after teh big cinemas. but we run all sorts of films, even ones the have been 'requested' by customers

running titanic the other day, the film was so bad it broke 5 times:(

Tom, out of interest, where do you source the film from? A normal distributor ? Same as the distributor who supplies the major cinemas with films at release times?

Or is it an old print which has already been played 100 times and is worn to death hence the breaking?

i dont know! as far as i'm concerned they just turn up overnight from a courier, then they get collected to day after at night, we allways have a carlton screen advert reel to run first which allways has a vw advert in:thumbup:.

quite often they are new virgin films that havn't been played before, but this titanic one had been wrecked, there were loads of missing frames around the bit where she gets her kit off

Tom,

If you want i can get the details for our old distributor, however I would have to slap you for using carlton, as everyone knows P&D is the realy way forward. (3 VW adds in the start up too).

Missing frames means it has probably visited one or two of the less good student venues, or it got magled there. Be careful about playing knackered stock as even with much repair, the great escape managed to take our dolby head with it on the vic 5 requiring a rapid projector fix.

i think it's more of a liscensing issue to be honest, i imagine we could get any film really, but we just aren't allowed to show them.

i think the missing frames are due to people wanting pictures of old big tits with her titis out

I'll keep my eye out on ebay for 35mm snippets of Winslet getting her kit off then!

We have a load of SDDS decoders downstairs, I'll have a sneeky peek at some point. There's also a massive telecine machine I think. I have a soft spot for old technology that once was state of the art :o

Yeah, it is licensing as you will only get films that are on general release, unless you can pay big big money, or get some preview showings :)

As for the tits out pics, as i said student cinema :)

what does annoy me is when sombody cuts out a frame but they dont cut it right and it puts the rest of the film out of rack,

At which point you fix it ;)
