Going Racing...RC Racing

Featured Replies

I'm buying the following from a friend or a friend Serpent 710 Team, its a bit of a step up from the electric Subaru at home.

My mates a Serpent distributor and a guy he knows is upgrading so his old car was for sale. I'd no intention of buying...then I seen it on the table and sure I couldn't resist. Its immaculate, not for long with me at the controls  .

I need to get a Radio Controller and a few other bits before I get let loose with it.

Check out the specs below

Jaysus it's gonna be fun keeping that in a straight line

Any tips for me....I'm a Novice

I thought you were too afraid to drive your car on a track :D

I wouldn't say afraid, more a case of I'd rather keep it in one piece, I'll drive anyone else's though

Well after 2 months of ownership I finally took it out on track last Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised how well I got on with it (I think the couple of Mini Z race meets we had helped a lot).

Its a little worse for wear after the day, as can be seen by the paint scuff marks, and sratches on the roof, but sure if there wasn't damage then I wouldn't have been trying.

I got some good feedback about my first run (the cars ex-owner commented to my mate that it looked like I'd be at it a while, so hopefully theres more to come.)

Before looking at the costs, watch this vid I took a while back at Tibshelf, one of the fastest tracks in the UK:

Vid

As Gaff said, it can be expensive.

I came up with some costs before on a different thread but Ill sum it up again for you, this is the gear on my car (minus upgrades):

Serpent 710, rolling chassis £350

NovaMax Fantini Engine £300

NovaRossi Tuned Pipe £50

So thats already £700.

Then you need to control the thing:

Servos x 2, £95 each

Receiver £85

Battery ~£25

Failsafe £15

Tires £15 a pair

Bodyshell £17.99

Already were up to £1062.99

Now theres the transmitter, which mine cost £350

but upgraded to spektrum so an extra £100

Then a charger to charge the batteries £160

Oh, and a starter box + 2 batteries, £75+10+10 = £95

So, on this car Ive spent in the region of about £1767.99

Still, its bloody good fun.

I had a play with one of these at work yesterday:

And I have to say Im probably going to have to buy one next week :D Absolutly fantastic bit of kit (once the gearbox was fixed:rolleyes: ) and looks sexy!

Failsafe £15

!

How does that work ?

I thought there might be one in the controller, I think if controller dies kicks in, not sure if the ervo Battery dies, haven't found out yet:)

Heres 2 vids I have, camera is ****, the yellow RC is the previous owner of mine, he now has a 720. The other is Mini Z's great crack.

With a PPM system which is normal receivers, there is no in built failsafe.

With a PCM system there is a in built failsafe in the receiver

With a DSM (Spektrum) system there is also a failsafe built in.

HOWEVER, the in built failsafes do not react quickly enough and have about a one and a half second delay before they kick in - which as you now know is too long when driving a nitro car at full speed :o

Which tranny & receiver do you have and I can tell you how to set the failsafe up so it comes on if the battery is low too?

Tranny Sanwa MX-3S Receiver is RX-331S

Ah, pretty sure Sanwa stuff (certainly the MX-3S as its more of an entry level tranny) is all PPM, so no built in failsafe. I suppose you could test it by turning the tranny off and trying to turn the servo's by hand.

Youll have to get your self over to the BRCA Nationals and have a natter:thumbup:

What should it do ?

I'd learn a lot ;):D

What should it do ?

Resist any movement that you put in, as by turning off the tranny you have simulated interferance/signal loss and the reciever should lock the steering and brake/throttle to a pre set position.

If there is a failsafe, when you set it, do it so that the steering will lock about 10% to the direction toward a safe area of track when the car is going down the straight. I always have mine so its points back to the infield as there tended to be more grass on that side to slow the car.

Also, set the brakes to full if you dont have a one way diff on the front - and if you do have a one way diff, to prevent the car from just spinning round when the failsafe kicks in set it to about 40% brakes.

Thankfully you have got the car second hand which means the actual car is probably set up & tuned quite well so at least you have won half the battle, the rest is just practicing and fiddling with settings :D
