Hi,

My wife is thinking of changing her 2004 Fabia petrol for a 2006 Fabia 1.4 Tdi with 8000 miles on board. It is a demo model.

I have ordered my 5th Octavia Tdi so I know how good the 1.9 diesel is. However, I have no experience, nor do I know anyone with a 1.4 diesel.

Therefore, any 1.4 Tdi owners willing to tell me of their experiences/problems/regrets?

The dealer is asking

not got one but it sounds good as it only has 3 cylinders , so has the burble of a 5 cylinder Audi

just watch what spec engine it is , there are 3 different horsepower engines

70bhp euro 4 emissions

75bhp euro 3 emissions

80bhp euro 4 emissions

i had a 3 cylinder polo tdi for ages and it was brilliant, especially for fuel economy

Yeah the 3 cylinder burble is great, a little gruff but a darn sight more character than ANY 4 cylinder engine. I'm think Triumph Tiger 900 or Laverda Jota 1000 (m/cycles of course).

Seriously, watch the bhp of the car, know what you are buying; get the 75 or 80bhp if you can; although, as you know it is the torque you will appraciate most.

Great little motors, very frugal, nippy. The engine suits the car perfectly. I say go for it. :)

Forgot to ask........

How many miles per gallon???

Anthony,

my polo was getting easilt 70mpg or a long journey, and mine was chipped.

when driven carefully they can give more than 80mpg

My friend Sue used to get 58mpg out of her's which included a lot of motorways runs at 85mph on 150mile round trips - I would say that was a minimum with sensible driving - expect low to mid 60s overall.

She has just changed from a 1.4Tdi to 1.4 Petrol and regrets that change to the petrol - loss of economy, lack of pulling power, noisier and has to be revved...

My mum used to have a 1.4 TDi (75bhp) Polo - much better to drive than her previous 1.4 16v Ibiza, or indeed Mrs Ap0gee's 1.4 MPi. Must be said, she did manage to blow the turbo, although as the car was only about 2 weeks old, it was most likely a manufacturing fault

I originally thought the Fabia Sport was going to have the 1.4 TDi in its little brother to the vRS guise - I still think it'd be better than the 1.4 petrol it used to have, although I've heard good things about the 1.2 HTP that they come with now... (Drifting OT a bit - sorry!!!)

Forgot to ask........

How many miles per gallon???

Anthony,

Official figures:

70bhp - 47.1 Urban, 67.3 Extra Urban, 58.9 Combined

75bhp - 49.6 Urban, 68.9 Extra Urban, 61.4 Combined

80bhp - 48.7 Urban, 67.3 Extra Urban, 60.1 Combined

REAL WORLD I'd say around 45 - 55mpg depending on how you drive, speed, traffic etc. etc.

One of my buddies has a Fabia 1.4 TDI 80bhp, and it is a very nice engine. I find the powerband a little narrow, but it depends on your driving style. Returns good fuel economy, even when driven brisk, and i absolutely love the sound of it.

I have ordered a new 1.9 TDI100, but i wanted some power, as i now own a 1.4 MPI 68bhp, so went all the way, nearly, the vRS is too expensive here in DK.

Have the 1.4TDi (75) in the previous generation Polo (2001). Like it a lot, get 60 plus MPG even on fast motorway runs, or in comparison, on long motorway runs, for 8 gallons I get 530 Miles versus my Fabia Vrs which does bang on 400, all driven at same cruising speed. Can feel a bit sluggish sometimes when pulling away bit once on the move it's great.

Not sure about the Fabis'a, but the Polo's road tax dropped to £50 this year too, which is nice.

Official figures:

70bhp - 47.1 Urban, 67.3 Extra Urban, 58.9 Combined

75bhp - 49.6 Urban, 68.9 Extra Urban, 61.4 Combined

80bhp - 48.7 Urban, 67.3 Extra Urban, 60.1 Combined

please note that the 75 bhp EURO 3 emissions engine is more economical , and probably won't have any sort of stutter either ;)

1.4 turboed derv vs 1.4 MPI with known problems, hmm that's a no-brainer :D

The derv one will have vastly better fuel economy, can be tuned up a little if wanted, although not really worth it I suppose, and will cruise very nicely on the motorways.

If you're doing very short trips though I'd also consider the 1.2 petrol, much better than the 1.4MPI imho :)

I'm really pleased with mine,75P.S.one,it goes really well, terrific up hills, can cruise on the motorway with plenty of speed and power in reserve.Get a test drive, you won't regret it,you'll probably be impressed.I bought an 05 demonstator estate in january -- no problems so far 8000 miles later.

Go for it. Mines 04 reg bought new. Now 61K. No problems. Av over 70mpg. Quiet, but lovely noise on pressing the pedal. Hope you have as much satisfaction.

Have now travelled over 10,000 miles in my 80bhp 1.4TDI - the car has been reliable does not use much oil and has very good midband acceleration. The power comes in at approx 2k revs and there is a need for more gear changes than with a four cylinder diesel. It warms up quickly (for a diesel!) and is basically a very nice car but I prefer the driving experience of a four cylinder. How many miles will your wife be driving per annum - a diesel only makes sense for higher mileage users. My only complaint is that the published fuel consumption figures are from fairyland as is the readout from the onboard computer. I keep accurate fuel records and my 1.4TDI is now getting a little over 55mpg (genuine) whereas the computer tells me it's 61.5mpg average. I cover all types of driving and motorway driving (mostly at 70mph) was giving about 55mp - same as my average. Driving at 60mph is much more economical as would be expected.

If your wife covers the miles to justify a diesel - go for it!!

Hi Norfolk Skoda,

I cover 25k+ per year in my Octavia Tdi. My wife, may cover 12-15k per year. It has been the main concern of mine whether she can justify diesel in the first place. For the same cash, she can get petrol 1.2 brand new and shiny in January 07. She already has a 1.2 and loves it. Then again, should she hold off until the model change.............?????

She is keen on this machine...love at first sight and all that.

The dealer will give full 2 year warranty with it as well.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Anthony,

If you hold off for the model change you are unlikely to get a good discount and personally I would want a new models problems ironed out before I bought one. If the 1.4TDI is an 06 model it must have more than 2yrs of the three years warranty left....? The depreciation would now be less on the 'used' TDI than on a new model I would think. 15K a year could justify the TDI but the most important factor is 'the lady's viewpoint' and if she loved the TDI at first sight all this may be immaterial..........................!!!!!!

I think doing 12-15K miles a year is plenty enough to justify changing to a diesel.

Very impressive engine for its size, I got a 75bhp estate and it is a cracking little motor, great pulling power and good fuel economy if test physically like i do, i get 62mpg on long runs and 53mpg in town and overall is a little under 55mpg, mostof it in town driving :D To get this figures change at 2,500 rpm on flat and down hill and 3,000 rpm when going up hill :D that is a progressive but safe drive :D and never going over 70-80mph :D

I would recommend it fully, I am pleased as punch with my one :D

Q

  • 15 years later...

i have just bought a 2009 1.4 TDI i also have the 1.2 petrol the wife will use the petrol for town driving the diesel i will use for longer journeys for fishing...but my question is...will it still be ok for town driving as long as i give it a blast every now and again.

from what im reading on this thread the 1.4 diesel seems almost bomb proof...i dont want speed i want a work horse to carry my fishing kit, but i must say when i put my foot down..she flys just as good as my petrol engine...so up to now im happy but time will tell 🙂

I reckon as long as you do give it a wee blast now and again you'll be alright, as you say.

And, well, if you occasionally do a full bore merge onto an NSL dual carriageway you're sorted...

I've never had a 1.4 TDI, only the 1.2 HTP but my neighbours 1.4 TDI 80hp seems to shift like a bat out of hell!
