For one of my many uni reports, i'm supposed to review how tyres are disposed of in the UK, and one of the options is re-treading the tyres.

Obviously, all the remoulds meet ther required safety legislation and quality specs for sale in the UK, so i'd say there is nothing inherrently wrong with them, but i'd value your opinion :D

Please vote to say whether you'd use them or not, and leave a short post explaining why..

tyres are so cheap it's not worth it

:iagree:

If I needed some really really cheep tyres I'd probably go for part worns.

I have used remoulds and every one of them has disintgrated after going out of shape or delaminating.

They are dangerous IMO at least for cars. I know that HGV's live on them but the seem to be far better quality.

Use a remould on a 14 grand car capable of 130 mph

Use a remould on a 20 grand car capable of 150 mph  lmfcowpimpwtime :D

Not worth it IMHO, due to pricing as well as safety.

It's more suited perhaps to a trailer that is only used infrequently, use these cheap things and chuck them yearly perhaps, no way I'd risk it on my car doing some significant speed.

had a problem with one in the 70's when I was skint. I would never use one again, there are good cheap tyres around & part worns as apd said are also a good option

You could always retread them & sell them to the developing nations, thats the sort of responsible approach I would expect business to adopt

Have to disagree about the trailer. If your cruising down the motorway at 60mph with a fully loaded trailer how much weight are the tyres supporting and how fast are those little wheels going around?

I do not agree that tyres are cheap but why take the risk?

Nope not ever. Re Remoulds on HGV's - I left a job once because the company put remoulds on the front of a 38 ton truck. So many drivers have been killed because of failed remoulds.

Nope, never, ever. Not even on the cheapest on cars. I'd buy a budget tyre, or a part worn, but not a remould.

Ive used them in the past not had any major issues with them, but they seemed to be a false economy wearing out far faster than some brands of "new" tyres. Im not a big fan will generally fit budget new over remoulds. Especially on 13" wheels :D

no - would be concerned about safety - have no personal evidience to back this up but cant help thinking theres a risk involved.

Trailer = 50mph in a lot of countries for this reason ;)

That said I havent got a trailer, nor do I intend to have one behind my car :)

Used these once when skint. Bloody awful no grip and delaminated!!!!!!

Large lorrys can use retreads can they not.

I voted yes, but this is only under very limited cases.

Such a case would be if i was running an old banger that wasn't powerful and only pootled around town.

As soon as the car is fast or does m/way runs etc then forget it, new tyre every time.

Yes they can. Would you want to drive a 44 ton artic across europe in a multitude of weather conditions, the worst being searing heat, with retreads on your vehicle?

No thanks. When a front tyre blows, with a fully loaded truck, you have to have luck on your side.

wife's old cinciquento used to have them on whenever tyres were changed. used to do about 15k miles on the fronts and 30k for the rear. cost was

I wouldnt tbh, no. Not in any circumstances ever. Definitely not.

The tyres keep you on the road, full stop. Its one area certainly not worth compromising on imho.

Used Camac M&S tyres in winter some time ago as the 008Rs would not work in the snow. No problems but needed 45g to balance.

Watched a mates Escort throw a tread off a remould on the M20 at around 80mph some years ago.

Chris

Like several rally competitors I have regularly used remoulds on cars up to 300 Bhp, two and four wheel drive cars, over some of the roughest terrain imaginable and have not had an issue with them. Have also used them on road cars and as long as you buy a decent brand like Colway or Monarch then should be fine.

Cheers,

Steve

It was Colway M&S now you come to mention it. I have known quite a few people use them with no problems. If I rmember correctly they used to do some pretty decent high performance remoulds.

Personally I would rather go for new as you know the carcass has not been abused.

Was only a question, as i was sure i had seen that lorry tyres had a load of solid rubber then a small amount of tread which can have a new lot of tread cut into it.

I wouldn't want to have shonkytyres on my car never mind a 44tonner :)

My comment was if it is a 'have 3 months to the MOT failure' type car then retread would b e ok)

God no. I used them once, when I was 18, driving my old renault 18 to uni (I was a skint student) and one delaminated on a roundabout, and threw the car across two lanes, I was lucky I didn't hit anything, they could have killed me! never again......
