Pikey mods

Featured Replies

Been lurking on here for a while now and i keep seeing pikey mods mentioned, what exactly are they?

Well one pikey mod is to cut a vent out of the wheel arch liner behind the intercooler.

And the all out authority on pikey modding is Jason, "taking it to the edge and beyond"

We have a rather handy search function which should give you a bit more information.

Tried the search, not turned up any definitive answer, just references to pikey mods, no descriptions.

I'm only guessing here, but this is what "Pikey mods" conjours up in my mind....

A mod to your car that is a bit cheap and home made, not an off the shelf bolt on/purpose built item. [sarcasm] The kind of thing you'd expect to here a boy racer bragging about who only had

As mentioned above, cutting a piece out of the wheel arch liner behind the intercooler in an attempt to improve the airflow through it. A sound idea at first, but then you have to think of the road dirt and loose chippings etc that could get flicked into it by the wheel..... (i'm not judging anyone who has done this i'm just using it as an example )

One covers the hole cut out with mesh or a grill.

Pikey Mod 1 - Audi TT arch liner/vent. Basically involves cutting out the TT vents and putting them on the existing wheel arch liner on the OSF behind the Intercooler. Having had this on the car now for 30,000 miles I can safely confirm that no dirt/stones get thrown up onto the Intercooler. Also, you will note many other TDi's have this fitted to their wheel arches (Toyota Avensis, Seat Ibiza, Audi TT, Audi A4, Audi A3) so you can assume it's fairly safe otherwise the manufacturer wouldn't do it, all it does it help the Intercooler loose air. Unfortunately the Seat Ibiza/VW Polo arch liners do not fit, and the Audi TT's arch liner doesn't either, but the flaps are larger = more air :)

Part number from Audi: 8N0 821 172 B "WHEEL HOUSING" OS Front.

I have pics that I will post up tonight :)

Pikey Mod 2 is even simpler. It consists of doing a bit of "cutting" around the OSF Fog Light, you'll notice that there is a little vent there already to allow air to the Intercooler, by cutting the fog light your simply allowing more air to be forced through. Again, after 30,000 miles of this I can confirm my Intercooler still looks like new and shows no signs of stone chips etc.

HTH

Chris.

I thought Pikey mods would have meant cheap 'one size fits all' spoilers and stickers n stuff from Halfords , you know , like those pink bloody steering wheel covers with matching pink fluffy dice that the teenage girl racers (and some older ones who should know better! ;) ) have on their cars?? Stuff like that?

Is it worth doing these mods to a PD100?

Thanks in advance

Shaun

I don't see why not, the PD100 has the same intercooler setup as the PD130 so yes, although it might not be as easy to do Pikey Mod 2 dependant upon the age of your vehicle. If it's the revised Fabia then it should be ok but IIRC the old style fog lights might stop the Pikey Mod 2.

I think that I will not have to do pikey mod 2 after looking at my fog suround. There is no plastic behined it to not stop air flowing in.

Found a good site for the pikey mod 1 though.

Why would you want to stop the air flow?

Why would you want to stop the air flow?

I dont think he means that, I think he means that he wont have to do it as there is already no obsructions behind the fogs so air is allowed to enter.

However (correct me if im wrong) this mod is to allow the warm air of the intercooler to exit via the modded arch liner, there fore it doesnt matter if there is air getting in or not, the warm air in that area is just lingering unless it is given an easy route out. Thus, the intercooler temp will drop and it can "cool" the "inter" better :D . (Same reason why you dont whack a fan in a computer with it all sealed up as its pretty useless, give it an exaust (SP) hole and the cooling is much more efficent as the hot air is expelled - much like me if I go to college tomorrow zombified because Ive been on Brisky all night...:o

i thought pikey mods were stuff like fitting alloy wheels and big spoilers to caravans:D

Pikey Mods basically maens doing stuff to your car on the cheap to improve performance.

Instead of buying that Carbonio CAI at £180, why not try removing your airbox and fitting a piece of 4" ventilation hose (28pence) linked to a K&N race filter (£40)

Bodging! That's the word I was looking for. It's not precise engineering.

It's a way of life to some people. Although I don't think the boffins at Porsche, or NASA got where they are today by doing Pikey Mods.

Yeah thats what I was getting at.

But you also want more cool air going in, thats why the bit around the fog light is removed.

I suppose the green air filter and pd160 intake come into the pikey modding scene too then.

I totally agree, you need cool air in to force the warm air out. Which is what the lad was saying, as he has a hole already there (acording to him) so doesnt need to do this part.

I have several, actually almost all of my styling mods are pikey mods! I was even going to make my own light brows out of painted polycarbonate :D Pikey Mods rule:thumbup:

did mine with a sharp knife and a hot air gun , marked lines , then cut with the knife , stuffed a largish screwdriver through the slot , then warmed up the plastic liner to bend the top of the slot out and the bottom of the slot in , ended up with about a 10mm gap from each slot for the air to flow out :D

That's what i was trying to say without calling it bodging, because if you're good enough with tools etc you can still produce some good looking results.

Cheap, home grown mods - perfomance or otherwise - that hasn't had a large budget to develop it etc. Something that makes engineering common sense, but is a saturday afternoon DIY kinda thing......

That actually looks pretty good....... Probably the most OEM looking of all the versions of pikey mod 1 as it's obvious that nothing has been stuck onto the liner..... I'm tempted to take this path myself now.

Might take a while longer than the others so as to make sure all the slots line up & match up etc...... but defo gonna have to consider whether to go for the TT liner, The B&Q vent or this 3rd option.

Cheers

Dave.

the best thing about it is , if you've got the tools it costs naff all but your time
