Steamy Windows

Featured Replies

I leave nothing in my car, it still steams up to the full extent though!!

Mine isn't usually left on re-circ, so might give it a try...

Couple of points from me apart from all the obvious other leak areas already covered.

If the rear window gets excessive condensation one problem I have found is the rear washer supply line seperating [aka front bulkhead] Its not enough to stop the washer function but over a period of time a gradual leak appears as damp insulation under LH side boot liner/lower lhs vertical panel. The side panel has to be removed for access.

The air con produces excessive condensation when the ducts are cold if warm air is then selected or vice versa. Although air con extract vast amounts of moisture from the ambient air it also cause huge amounts of condensation. [warm air holds more moisture than cold] . Ive found using the air con does get rid of all the moisture intially but then when you next need airflow it all heaves out of the ducts . Its a compromise of running the air con regularly during winter and being able to see. Dry the system out using the fan on high with no heat or air con. Crack the windows and never use the recirc. The moisture needs expelling from the interior/ducts

PS never had this problem on previous Fabia without air con.

I discovered the reason for my car misting up was leaking rear doors. The dealer has now replaced both window carriers and the problem has improved. I understand that this is a fairly common Fabia fault and dealers are aware of it.

Help.

what are window carriers ? [What the bottom of the window sits in or do they mean the side guides]?

How does this cause the rear doors to leak?

We also have a real problem with misting up. It can be a real pain when we need a hasty getaway because we're late for something. We occasionally have problems with it re-steaming after having been clear for a while, which can be pretty dangerous when you can't see out of the windscreen

When the problem first arose we got it checked out and the dealer told us that the windscreen wash hose was leaking into the air-con system. However, I'm assuming that this isn't still the case as it was fixed.

Additional note -

bought an 04 Fabia in Dec 06. Bought a spare alloy wheel & when I went to check if it would fit (I'd only had a cursory look when we got it) i.e. actually removed the inner box and wheel I discovered 1/2 inch of water sloshing about in the spare wheel well.

I was at the dealers today and questioned them - the (not very useful reply) was that the water drained down the side channels from when you opened the rear hatch and collected there.

Might be worth checking.

The car had already had a rear door seal done when we got it - having said the above we have not suffered overly from condensation, but then again it is garaged every night.

Skoda UK deny there is any known fault with Fabia leaks. I have an e-mail from them that is comical. Never known such blatant lies and stupidity, and I really thought they'd know better as the leaks are plastered all over the internet.:finger: Big finger to skoda.

We have suffered misted up and frozen inside windows from new.

Had it checked twice at one dealer where we bought the car and they said no problem with the car.

It had got so bad recently that we seriously considered getting rid of the car but have taken it to another dealer who has confirmed that there is definitely a known problem with the rear doors leaking, sometimes the seals and sometimes the window carriers which dont get sealed properly from new.

Our Vrs is now in the dealers, inside stripped out to dry and sealing job on the rear doors.

The mechanic is very knowledgeable and says that some Seats are even worse.

It seems that somehow water can build up in the bottom of the rear doors and then simply flows out and onto the rear carpets and gathers on the felt underneath so the carpets dont always feel damp.

Get it back tomorrow so hopefully it will be sorted out OK. Its the only problem wevehad in three years. Otherwise a great car.

Do you leave the air vents closed or leave the car in recirc mode? If not, it does sound like you might have a leak and worth checking to see if the pollen filter is blocked and that the door seals/cards aren't wet....

Chris

I'll have to look at pollen filter, living as I do close to New Forest. Is filter easy to get at?

MY car is parked upwards facing on a steep drive and am wondering if this could casue problems with door seals. Thre is quite a bit of run-off when the doors are opened. What doe you all hink?

If a window carrier on a rear door is leaking, you could well find a wet patch at the bottom of the fabric on the door panel, from where the water seeps into the carpet instead of running off. Might be worth a looksee and feel.

Best

Mo

PS Edit: @ sk o d a: A handy tip I read on here was to keep the dash vents open when parked up with the fan set to "screen and footwell". I use recirc a lot and I'm not sure of the logic, but mine has been a bit better since doing that (given I don't think I have any other leaks). :)
