Vista is upon us

os X 10.5 anyone?

I'm more interested in this than any version of Vista :)

how come the windows are slanted?

It's M$s attempt at better desktop space management...

OSX has had something similar for a good while now... and it works on much lower spec hardware :D

Any idea when Dell will start shipping new machines with Vista installed?

I think it's mid February ish, I was looking at a new laptop but will wait for Vista I think.

I keep getting emails from MS and Dell telling me not to wait, if I buy now I get a voucher to upgrade to Vista when it's available to Home Users.

Yep, I think I'll stick with OSX. ;)

yep, cos it's so secure and never has any type of malware...;)

Well its intellegent in the way it monitors users... when i log onto my machine i run outlook and messenger.. so it caches part of the programs so they start quicker..

check out this article that shows some of the performance bits and bobs

Cheers for that. So it's an attempt to make the OS more pre-emptive, without actually giving us a proper pre-emptive multi-tasking system with proper user job control, or actually stopping background jobs stealing the focus for their messages then?

Sorry thats 1 piece compared to how many that are already out there for vista?

Anyway the minimum spec for vista using aero means that it will be linux, stay with XP or the way of the Mac next for me.

Yeah the ONLY piece of malware for OSX is just a proof-of-concept... how many pieces of malware for XP out in the wild?? :P

There are security issues with every OS.... including Vista... clicky

OSX does everything I need and more (and does it without making a big performance about it).

It's no were near as bigger target as an M$ OS either :D

it is much better at task management now... it solves the age-old problem of windows applications being slow after someone has been away for lunch, and XP decides to un-load half the application from RAM to do other things with...

It definately works well... outlook2007 starts up instantly now as does firefox and messenger (the only things i use on my home pc lol)

You never really here any real big hoo-haa about exploits and issues on OS X, but they should be considered more dangerous than Windows (for example) simply because the Mac typical user assumes the OS is impervious to attack (because that what Steve Jobs tells them).

The "slow after lunch" thing isn't typical of my experience (well except in the case of ME, which was well named, but not for the right reasons).

I'd also suggest that "nothing but mail clients and browsers" model isn't typical of how those of us who use Windows machines for work use them.

  • 1 month later...

I've been playing with Vista (and office 2007) for a couple of days now , and am very impressed so far.

No problems with any of it , and it looks and feels very slick.

I wouldn't pay the daft prices out of my own money - I'd wait till I needed a new PC with it on there already - but it's very nice indeed

I've been using it for a few days as well - overall I'm quite impressed, even without the Aero effects (only a 64Mb gfx card). eBuyer are doing the OEM release of Home Premium for about £60...for system builders only of course ;)

Might be tempted !

- Sorry for this but I would far rather that microsoft actually updated the technology alot more alongside Mac and apple for example..

Would prefer the market to be split rather then microsoft upodating just the GUI and chucking a brand name on it to sell at such a high price...

In 'my Opinion' is Vista worth that much from my own pocket - No.

I do think the GUI looks nice - but that was exactly the same from the good old 95 to XP update :D

The only windows expierience I enjoyed was that of 3.1. Everything since has been carp!

- Couldn't have said it better myself.. Stupid brand names
