Alternator/battery light query

Featured Replies

Another problem with my Felicia...

The wife noticed this morning that the battery light is coming on at low revs and gets brighter when the car is revved.

I've checked the alternator voltage and it seems fine - 12.5 volts when stopped and about 14 when the car is ticking over.

Any ideas?

Thanks

wiring problem maybe?

my car did exactly the same and it was the voltage regulator that was knackerd does the headlights dim or flicker at the same rate as the battery light the voltage regulator also houses the brushes and they could be worn it is pretty easy to see as it is a small metal rectangle on the right hand side of the alternator (if looking at the front of the car) my brushes were worn and it threw up similar probs not sure how long they should be but you should have some resistance as you reinsert them hope this helps

The headlights do dim a bit when the revs change. I'm going to do a few more tests in the morning, but I think I'll buy the regulator/brushes module - about

Well im having the same problem with mine, internal dash battery light gets brighter with revs, just drove 600 miles with no fuss.

is it the brushes?? anyone help pls.

The regulator is a very very common problem

The radio is one of the first faults , then the air bag light comes on

But the regulator is only about £20.00 ish

I do think Butts of Bawtry do them cheap too if you are anywhere near them

The alternator light comes on when the voltage produced is different from the battery voltage, it can be lower, or higher.

Also the alternator is multiphase, and if you loose one diode then the light will glimmer a bit due to low voltage for part of the cycle. Your (peak reading, averaged display) meter won't show this

Got to say that i wouldn't necassarily diagnose a regulator as being duff although this is a problem on felicia's but in overcharging that will eventually ruin the ecu. Basically alternators can have intermittent problems of charging and then not charging and it will only show up on a voltage test if it is playing up at that specific time. My advice would be to get down to a friendly scrap yard and buy one second hand. A friendly scrap dealer should let you bring it back if exchange unit is duff also.

my battery light shows all the time even when everything else is turned off would you say it was the alternator or could it come back to the earths. I had recently put a second hand alternator on and it made no difference.

Hi

No that does not sound right

You will need to get someone to check that over

The light should switch off when the key is out of the ignition
