Router Problem

Featured Replies

Is there anyone here that can help me with this huge pain in the *** problem I'm having with the Netgear DG834GT Router that sky have given me with my broadband.

My internet and wireless are all faultless and working fine. I am having a real problem though with the router config. I have setup port forwarding for several services (Remote Desktop/Windows Media Encoder/Bittorent) but the router is still blocking them even though I have told it to make them an exception. Whats even more worrying is that even if you turn on remote management, you still can't connect to it. I can access the services I want from within the LAN so everything on the server side is okay.

Is it me or is this router not saving the settings properly that I make or am I doing something obvious that I will kick myself about it later.

Only changes I have made to the router since receiving it was to use MAC Address filetering on the wireless and turned off the broadcast name. I also told the router to stop responding to ping (Why this isnt turned on by default puzzles me)

Is there anyone that can help me before I tread on this router:confused:

YOu have opened those ports on the stateful firewall as well as setting them to forward on NAT havn't you?

Yep! You got it in one,

I phoned our network guy today and he told me that the newer netgears were a pain in the ****, because even if you forward the port you still need to add the exception in the firewall. I won't kick myself too badly as it isn't obvious :)

To be honest I think that is desired behaviour.

The reason the old netgeared used to do it automatically is that they ran 'NAT firewalls' not real stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewalls.

Regardless glad you have it sorted :)

doesnt that support UPNP? if it does... switch it on... job done :D

and before anyone says I DONT CARE IF ITS INSECURE!

Take it you don't ever have to sort the I've been my firewall let it all through people out then :P

I use the same router at home and have port forwarding setup for my p2p stuff.

Used in conjunction with zonealarm I can scan the particular ports via a website such as grc.com and they will show up as closed while the p2p program is not running and open while it is.

Obviously this is not as good as stealth but it seems to work for me.

Biggest problem I have as cheesemonkai will agree is that I can't seem to get wpa-psk to work reliably so have to settle for the less secure 128bit wep :thumbdwn: .

I always thought netgear were the dogs danglies but this router has changed my opinion of that :(

Dont turn on remote management, anyone on the net will be able to attempt to login and change your router config and you wont know it. Even if you have changed the password from the routers default, as it doesnt lockout after several incorrect attempts a hacking tool is all thats needed.
