Trying to set up my static IP :(

Featured Replies

I have been following the instructions on PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall to try and set up my static IP, I am with plusnet and requested a block of IP's, I was given the following:

Current Status : You are now using a static IP address

Static IP: 212.159.24.AAA Gateway Address

212.159.24.BBB address for router

212.159.24.CCC spare address

212.159.24.DDD Broadcast Address

Netmask: 255.255.255.252

Primary DNS: 212.159.A.A

Second DNS: 212.159.B.B

So i assumed it was as simple as filling in the below properties page and bingo

w2k_netconfig2.gif

But when i do, then save all, my connection drops untill I reset it to automatically obtain the addresses, Anyone any ideas where I am going wrong?

When I do ipconfig/all i get the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig/all

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : derek

the 10.0.0.1 is just the IP addy to enter my routers config, its a speedtouch 545.

Confused  , but then again that doesnt take much ;)

Are you sure you want it to point at the PC you're on for DNS lookups? I usually set this to point at the router which has the Plusnet DNS settings in it.....

See, Im confused already :D

Im really just trying to open a couple of ports for certain programmes to use, but according to portforwards guide i have to sort out this static IP first before i can forward the port.

this is the guide i am using : PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

I'm assuming on the router, you've set your internal IP to 192.168.0.150 and the external one to 0.0.0.0 as per the guide (with an appropriate port for the software you want). This will forward any requests coming in on the router's port xxxx to your PC's port xxxx.

On the PC side, you just set the static IP by putting 192.168.0.150 in the TCP/IP properties box and set the default gateway and dns server to the internal address of the router (192.168.0.1?).

Hope that's clear lol!

Chris

Just rereading the bottom of your original post, and it looks like your router is on 10.0.0.1 so this is what you should use for your default gateway and dns server settings :D

Looks to me if the bold type is his dhcp details that his router is on 138 and not 1.

Personally, set all to obtain automatically in windows panels.

Dos cmd window enter:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Your ip will be 10.0.0.#

Your gateway / router / dns will be 10.0.0.# typically this is 1 or 254.

Post the results of that step, the renew. From there it's but 5 changes and your right it should be easy, networking is; until it does not work.

Assuming your router is on 138 and not 1, I would pick the following IP scheme.

You may ignore the next bit if your head is spinning...

For any server type affair, fix the ip's to there machine names eg machine1 is 10.0.0.1, machine2 is .2 and so on.

Leave all roaming clients on dhcp range say 150 to 200; given your router is possibly on 138...I'd check that, maybe change it to 254 if you can.

Printers and other devices 200+.

Post the results of that step, the renew.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig/release

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 0.0.0.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig/renew

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : lan

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.1

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.138

So your router's IP is 10.0.0.138 (this should be the value used for the default gateway and DNS server) and 10.0.0.1 is the IP the router has assigned to your PC. This is the one you can override by specifying the 192.168.0.150 address :D

So if I'm reading this right, in the box below i should put:

w2k_netconfig2.gif

IP Address:212.159.24.***???

Subnet Mask:255.255.255.252

Default Gateway:10.0.0.138

Preferred DNS Server:10.0.0.138

Alternative DNS Server:???????????

Sorry for being a PITA

IP address should be the internal IP address so 192.168.0.150.... and subnet mask stays the same....

Chris

what about the alternate DNS?

That can be left blank :D

Chris

Ok, did that with these settings:

IP Address:192.168.0.150

Subnet Mask:255.255.255.252

Default Gateway:10.0.0.138

Preferred DNS Server:10.0.0.138

Alternative DNS Server:____________

and got this error

error.bmp

so I Saved anyway and my connection dropped, had to go back to auto detecting my settings.

Do you think kicking it would help?? ;)

Ah sorry - your IP address needs to be a 10.0.0.x one then so it's on the same subnet :D How about 10.0.0.150? ;)

Chris

Well, i have connectivity, still got the same error, but its working Thanks for the help:woot:

Which error are you getting now? Oh, and don't forget to update your PC's new IP on the router :D

Chris

Got this one again

error.bmp

but it works,

Have not updated the router yet, managed to get the ports forwarded ok though.

The problem is your IP numbering scheme is conflicting.

They either all need to start with 192.168 or 10.0.0, it will work but as you have seen will give warnings.

I would alter the internal IP address of your router to something like 192.168.0.100 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 then change the DNS and default gateways to this IP address.

I think it's because you're using a 10.x.y.z which is class A, so Windows thinks the subnet should be 255.0.0.0 and not 255.255.255.252 ;)

That shouldn't bother it as you can be take a 10.*.*.* and divide it into smaller subnets for individual groups.

What manny said is correct you need to pick addresses on the same subnet so that windows is happy.
