Driving roads around Scotland?

Featured Replies

Going up to Edinburgh next tuesday coming back wednesday night so looking for some good driving roads around the area.

Anybody?

John.

Travel via Stirling ( M9 from Edinburgh ) then take the A84 keep going to the A827 junction ( Killin ) follow that to Aberfeldy then the A826/822 to Crieff. From Crieff the A822/823 to Dunfermline then back over the Forth road bridge to Edinburgh.

Or you could just go to Stirling and do the A84/85/82 up through Glencoe and turn round and come back it's that good.

Head more or less due South from Edinburgh into the Borders, and the world is your lobster!

much better road surfaces than you're used to too mate.

Cheers guys

as the man said above.....glen coe and back!!:).....not cos its a great driving road but it has spectular views aswel.......then juts keep going up the great glen to inverness then up to ullapool and over the kylesku bridge, laxford bridge then down to lairg, over to the east coast then A9 all the way back.....tickity boo!!!:).....just about covered all of scotlands best roads for driving there all in one go!!:).....lovely:)

Kit, Better to turn left onto the A87 at Invergarry, left again at Morriston Bridge, right onto the Road North (forgot the number cos I pass rather than use that road lots) from there, and pick up your route between Garve and Ullapool IMO.

come ashore!!!:)......best you have a weekend free for that!!.....you mean up to kyle then on to gairloch?:).....nice road but even i would be tired driving that and im from ullapool!!......plus the single track road to gairloch is a nightmare for caravans!!...grrr!!.....but other than that top route:).......where you heading to up in that neck of the woods?

kit:)

You're hooking a right in Kintail, a few miles short of Kyle of Lochalsh.

Rather not say too much about destinations, but I drive the A87 regularly, going between where I live and where I'm from.

you mean kintail forrest?......thats miles from gairloch!!......you mean then up to starthcarron and up to achnasheen? then out at garve and up to black water bridge?:).....rither way great roads!!.....very scary at night in the winter!!.....was in a car when i was younger heading to gairloch from ullapool when a stag landed on the roof!!.....not much car left!!!

kit:)

Brain fade in last; now correcting route using Multimap:-

A890, and past Stromeferry, left past "Beware of the Elephant" and through Lochcarron on the A896 to Kinlochewe (why is the town at the end of Loch Marie called Kinlochewe?) and left onto the A832, joining the A835 just above Corrieshalloch Gorge.

thats the gairloch road!!:)......the gorge is just up the road from ullapool:). about twelve miles....did a bridge jump off it when i was 15:)....that road from kinlochewe is a nightmare!!...its single track right up to gairloch!!:(....we used to leave the boat there for the weekend and drive back to ullapool in a gipsy!!.....long old way!!.....its actually quicker to yomp over fisherfield forrest (not really a forrest)

I keep forgetting that single-track confuses some people, I'm that used to them.

I'd agree with Craig, with the change that I'd take the A82 right up to Inverness, then the A9 down to Perth.

I managed to average 61 mph from Stirling to Inverness once via the A82 :D:D

Bit naughty as none of it is dual carriageway :o:O

last thing you want is to take the A9 from inversneck to perth if you can help it though!!.....gaurenteed to get soooo frustrated, stopped and fined!!......whenever i go home i go up the A82 from glasgow....havent done the A9 for years since i witnessed an horrific crash caused by frustration!!!:(.......single track is great if you know the road!!.....hell on earth if you dont!!!

I was nearly in a crash caused by frustration/lack of observation on the A9 just North of Perth about 25 years ago. We were heading North, when some, ah, clown pulled out of a line Southbound and made straight for us. Fortunately my dad was able to swerve into a long de/acceleration lane, so he missed us!

thats just exactly what happend to the car in front of me!!!.....he kept looking and looking and got frustrated...pulled out from behind a truck (way to close behind it to see) and drove straight into an on coming truck!!:(......it was only two miles until the dual carriageway!!......he paid for it with his life!!!....such a waste!!....its about time the road was upgraded to dual carriageway all the way to inverness!!....its a popular place now and has big industry!!!......but then again i have been out to many a fatal crash (was in the mountain rescue) that has happend on a single track road!!

Small world time in an odd sort of way then! Except that this guy I was talking about was in a line of cars and didn't look rather than couldn't see.

most folks just pull out wether they can see or not!!.....my mates dad died in a crash on the A9 when we were kids:(.....the road was even worse back then!!....he happened to be the oncoming car!!....was well sad we were only 13 at the time:(......thems the reasons i dont drive it anymore!!....it only takes another 20-30 minutes by going up the A82!!.....plus you get great scenery nearly all the way!!....theres nothing scenic about shlod summit or drumochter!!!

mm, only been to Scotland once, stayed in Fort William and drove up to Mallaig, great road up that way and in Mallaig, theres a fish restaurant that sells fish & chips during the day, cannot remember its name, but that was the best fish I have EVER eaten:D

Yeah, that year I was talking about was when they were building the Pitlochry bypass, and I had a holiday job up there. One day we saw a bus that had almost destroyed (nothing left in front of the firewall, and what was left was 2 feet shorter than it should have been) a Datsun Sunny.

Despite the AA's rankings, that's about the most dangerous road in Scotland, based on fatal accidents or "would have been fatal accidents but for the grace of God" incidents I've seen, seen the remains of or been involved in.

And as you say, the A82's way more decorative too, but don't tell everyone; it's busy enough as it is! ;)

oh yeh thats right!!...stumm!!...its full of caravans and tourists!!....yeh dont want to go that way all!!!.......in the old days it would take us four hours to get from ullapool to perth!!......we had relatives in yorkshire so you can imagine how long it took to get there!!......there has been some horrific crashes over the years on the A9:(.......it used to be a whole lot worse when the winters were really bad!!....30 ft snow drifts were common most years!!

Worst A82 experience - several miles stuck behind an Italian, yes Italian registered motorhome that was doing about 20mph, where I'd have done more like 60 on an empty road.

yep thats the down side of it!!!.....but theres so many tourist places that your not stuck forever!!:)

best feeling driving up north.....filled up at ullapool before heading off climbing......two peeps on motorbike had just filled up and left.....only leaving behind his large european style wallet......ferry tickets, passports cash etc......said to james the filling station owner that i would catch them up give to them seeing as i was heading that way.....well as far as dundonell.....drove like a beast and caught them up about three miles before the turn of (gairloch road) and started flashing light and sounding horn!!!....lets just say that lots of fingers at me and hard stares!!!....got all the way to the junction and thought if they carry on then tough!!!.....they pulled over.....bloke got off and almost ran at me,face raging !!...so jumped out and showed him the wallet......expalined what had happend:)......he so chuffed cos he said he had enough juice in tank to get him to hull and the ferry to holland!!and they werent going stop again!!....felt well pleased with myself after night!!!....had a great day on the hill to boot:)
