How f*****g much for a service!!

Featured Replies

Stealers would be the right word. The Octy 2 went in for a basic service today. We originally were quoteed £120. Still a bit I thought especially as Christmas is coming. Got an FSI Octy as courtesy car...which got clamped!

Anyhow, when picking our car up we were told it was £185. Exsqueeze me said I very bewildered!!

I was told the car only needed servicing every 20,000miles or 2 years ( I knew this) and replied so justify this cost. I was told the oil is very expensive, almost twice as much as any other car!!

Is this stuff gold plated or are Skoda making a money making scam out of bi-annual servicing.

I've lodged a personal complaint to the director of our dealer who has said he will investigate as it sounds very steep....no ****

What is this oil business and has anyone else experienced this?

Incidentally, the only jobs done were an oil and filter change + pollen filter

Does sound excessive! Did you get a breakdown of where the money has gone?

Amount of labour, cost of consumables etc....

Steve

Oil and filter change should be less than

Yours is only that cheap Dave cos you make them use the (old chip) oil wot you provide :haha:

i phoned up my skoda garage inquiring about an oil change and they quoted me 120. This was for oil, plug, filter, and disposal of the old oil.

The Super Long Life Diesel Oil is about £10 a Litre.

& don't get me started on Stealer Servicing Costs mine was due a 40K Service, I was quoted between £220 & £330 at various Stealers around the NW. I ended up going to a local independent and mate of mine who did the service for just over a ton and used the SLL oil of my choice.

That sounds like standard dealer prices to me. Retail for the oil is circa £60 for 4L on it's own. So parts will be oil, filter, pollen filter, sump plug (if they still do things this way?) and washer fluid (even if you brimmed it just before you went - which I tried once). You're probably looking at a minimum of £80 just for the bits. You'll also be lucky to find a dealer that charges less than £50 an hour labour and a basic service will be (guessing again) minimum 2 hours via menu pricing.

That you were quoted £120 but then charged £185 is the scary bit. I think I'll be switching to fixed intervals at my first service, if only for cheaper intermediate oil top-ups...

.....Retail for the oil is circa

I'm just extrapolating the cost of the 1l of Shell Helix Ultra VX I had to emergency buy a couple of days ago. Didn't have the opportunity to shop around :o

Could be worse.. VW have quoted £261.07 inc VAT for my service on the golf.... Me thinks i'm going to be taking it else where (Doing it myself!!)

And on top of that £50.25 for MOT

(They charge £105 p/h for labour!!)

Just thought it would be interesting to enquire though and find out how much i'm saving doing it myself!

Its great only taking your car in once every two years.

Worth every penny

When mines due next year, I will be doing what I did in Germany, and thats take my own oil in and tell them to use that. If they grumble they can stick it up their *rse and I will go to an independant.

btw, I was quoted

Depends a bit on mileage and usage but, like I said before, my local Skoda specialist dealer charged me £105 for annual service [only 8500 miles] and used a good class (50/50) semi synthetic oil - said for my kind of usage the gold dust oil was a waste of money and he didn't much like the look of the oil or the engine anyway, when drained after 2 years/20k on the stuff.

I think £180 for a 2 year service is good value, its more than just a basic oil service. The special longlife oil is £12 a litre, then the other bits and bobs plus labour.

My old Boxster cost £300 for the equivalent of a VW 10K service, and it would need 2 of those to the octavia's 1.

Lady opposite me in the office had her Kia Picanto 1.1 serviced 2 weeks ago, cost to her for the annual service was £250.

The MK I Octy costs between £250 and £300 per service so i'd consider myself lucky at only paying £185 for a service.

But my Octy MK1 diesel only cost

Try Opie Oils hes on here as 'oilman' not sure but there may be a forum discount, A friend uses him for the lubricants for his Evo and has no problems, Infact a lot of folks from MLR do and he's well spoken of.

I've supplied my own oil to Horners Bury for the last couple of services and they made absolutely no fuss about using it...I even had a trim-to-fit windscreen wiper in the car that was on my to-do list which they fitted for me at no additional charge...

Hopefully the other NW dealers will be similarly accommodating!

  • 3 weeks later...

Service light has just come on on my vRS at nearly 16,000 (was quite happy with that figure!). As my work takes me all over the North East of England I phoned half a dozen dealer for an "all inclusive fixed price quote" for a "first variable service".

Price ranged from

I had a similar experience with a Fabia vRS, where the dealer insisted it was NOT the annual service (i.e. they didnt do the work) but charged for the full amount (as if it had been). Different dealer did not overcharge but missed the brake pads virtually missing at the front of the car (which they should have checked regardless as it's a visual check), so it's now over to the independant specialist(s) instead, who are cheaper, use genuine parts (or improved ones if asked) and do a fine job too :)

Best advise regardless is to shop around, and don't exclude other VAG brands from your list. In some places a SEAT/VW/Audi dealership may be cheaper (!!).

 I have just come back from my dealers where I booked a service.

I've got an Octavia 110 Tdi on long life oil.

When I bought the car from them in 2003 I was told that they recommend the long life oil is changed every 20,000 although SKoda say 30,000. I was also led to believe that even though the oil wouldn't need to be changed it would still need to come in for an annual service (without oil) and I have done this so far (also as the service reminder has come on), especially as the car was under warranty until last June.

Anyway today the guy said to me that I don't need to come in for an annual service and should have just been having it done when I had my oil changed at 20,000 mile intervals.

Bearing in mind I do low mileage and the car is 3.5 years old this would mean it would only have been in once. The car has done 36,000 miles at present and the service warning is showing 700 miles. I am now totally confused  as to what I should have been doing - whether I've wasted money and had the car in when it didn't need to be.

BTW the car will be having its 40,000 service and I couldn't believe the price quoted. I said the oil may as well be changed as well now as I'm not far off 40,000.

They have quoted me:

Element -(?)

I'm shocked with the local experiencies on this thread!! I have a 05 2tdi estate which was in for 3rd variable service @ near 60k miles yesterday including new rear brake pads supplied and fiited for

Oh, I missed the other clincher from the Sheffield dealer.... If you ask for your tyres to be swapped front to back they will soon be starting to charge and extra £30 (inc vat) on top of the £229 for the service!!! The reason behind this, well they said it is because there is no need to remove wheels to check brakes, and as such the tyres can be on the hub for a long time, so can be difficult to remove!

I wonder what the official Skoda view would be, is this correct, or is it income generation? Shurely if leaving the wheels on the hub for a long time is an issue then removal should be part of a service??

Just been quoted
