Which Canon 350 or 400D?

Featured Replies

Have been thinking about a new camera and am torn between which one to get.

Do i go for the newer 400D at around

I've got a 350D which is excellent. A touch on the small side for holding, but you get used to it. :)

I'll have it with me on Sunday at the C&F if you want a play?

Got the 400d ....it has small improvements over the 350 but nothing earth shattering...just remember Jessops do a price match on any UK based dealers, high street or web :)

Warehouse Express - Photographic Equipment, Digital Cameras, Lenses and Accessories, for a very good deal. Don't bother with Jessops, they are interested in selling you what they have in stock, not what you want.

The 400D offers 10.1MP, where as the 350D offers 8.3MP I think. They both use the same Batteries, Grips etc etc. As for the standard lens, It's slow, cheap, and not worth paying any extra for.

You have not stated if you are a current Eos system user? If not then, maybe you should think about the Nikon D80, a far better camera for the money, however the price is about £100 ish higher, but it is well worth it.

With the cannon I would go for the 400d purely for the self cleaning function which should help minimise the dust on the sensor.

I'm having the same quandary at the mo... 350D or 400D..... thinking I'm probably going to go for the 400D tho in the end cos it's got more megapixels and it's also got the self-cleaning function - and it's not really that much more expensive... :)

The 400D is the replacement for the 350D, as for which to go. I would wait till after christmas as the supply of the 400 increases, it should then be possible to get some good deals on the outgoing 350.

That's never been my experience and they've always been overly helpful in letting me try various combinations, explaining how features work, and there's been no sales pressure at all. If you do decide to go with Jessops, Google on discount codes too as they aren't widely publicised (surprise surprise!) but with them, it made them cheaper than the competition :D

Obviously if you know exactly what you want (and you can wait a day or two), then use kelkoo or similar to find the best price and order from the comfort of your home :D

Got it from Kamera in St Helens... they're usually pretty good, just got it a bit wrong this time lol...

Was £529.99 for the 18-55 Kit with extra battery, 1GB Ultra II card, camera bag, and a little accessory kit with a mini tripod, lens cloth and a card case... didn't think that was too bad! I know I could get one cheaper online but tbh I prefer to get one from a shop cos I know then I can take it back if anything goes wrong!

Their website is Bestcameras Canon Eos Digital SLR

HTH :D

Can't wait to go and get the card tomorrow lol - been frustrating not being able to play with the camera tonight!

oh - I forgot to add.... buy one and register online before Dec 31st 2006 and Canon will let you have a 'free' 256MB card.... ok so it's not a huge card but if it's free I'm having one ;)

They also have some discount vouchers for accessories; these run out on Dec 31st too.

That card arrived very quickly....within tthree days of registering, all I need is a bit of sun so I can go play......may have to go for the atmospheric misty shots I think

Sorry to be the latecomer to this thread - the only way that the 400 is worse than the 350 is that for some reason Canon have decided to scrap the info LCD (the little B&W one).

I was really hoping that they might improve it by adding ISO to it instead of scrapping it (the 350 was crying out for ISO info), but no - now you need to power up the big colourful display rather than having all the useful info available at a glance. Grr. Gripe ... but apart from that it's a really nice camera

A work colleague of mine has been looking into this and I think overall, he would go for the Nikon D80.

If you don't already have an SLR and selection of lenses in your possession, then it's worth considering the alternatives.

I've just bought a sony alpha dSLR for my old man and with the very little play I've had with it, it's a cracking camera. The screen and menus are easy to get to grips with and it feels really nice in your hands (obviously hand sizes differ) :)

Although to be honest, the only reason I bought it (I got the "W" kit with the 18-70 and 75-300 zoom lenses) is because I had a special offer at an insultingly low price which I couldn't refuse :o Although as his first venture into dSLR territory, he's well happy and although it's a light body and the lenses weigh sweet FA, they are pretty well built - but I gather they can be a bit on the expensive side until Sigma, Tamron and others release lenses for the alpha mount.

Foget the 350/400D only for small hands go for a real camera Canon 20D or 10D

used from a good dealer.

Aha! but are they Japanese lady small? That's the demographic the 350/400 was designed for :P Did you know they call them Kiss in Japan...yuck!

On a more serious note, either will be fine IMO. Personally I'm more of a Nikon man and the new D40 feels much more comfortable to me but YMMV. One thing to be said against the Canons (leaving aside the whole naming fiasco) is the 18-55 kit lens. Compared to just about everyone elses, the quality just isn't there. If you can get a good deal on the 350 jump on it, the megapixel difference is minimal in real terms and you'll only miss the dust buster if you change lenses a lot.

Take a look at Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ for some pretty in-depth reviews and helpful forums (so long as you don't go posting Nikon vs Canon you'll be fine )
