Hi we have a p reg skoda felicia LXI.

It has been having a problem with missfiring often under low revs up a hill (sometimes so bad the engine is braking) for the past month and this has escalated to the car cutting out usually when idling at junctions but sometimes when driving!!:eek: When it has cut out it wont start for a couple of minutes. The starter etc sounds fine - it just isnt catching.

We have had it into the garage and he has changed spark plugs (which were really dirty)and leads, distributor which was broken and the coil pack. These seem to have helped but not cured the problem!

To start with my boyfriend changed the fuel filter incase it was choked and this also seemed to help a little.

Any ideas where we can point our friendly garage man???

He has suggested an in-line fuel filter (something like that anyway!)

reading from other threads is it worth gettinghim to clean out the throttle????

Is it a single or multi-point injection 1.3, or is it a 1.6?

ITs worth the cleaning of the throttlebody and its also worth checking for inlet manifold gasket failure, very common on the MPI equipped cars and sometimes misdiagnosed as coilpack failure.

There's some info on here about the throttle body for a Fabia 1.4 MPI which should be applicable to your Felicia. I recommend taking great care if you decide to clean it in place, as trying to retrieve loose bits of cotton wool before they enter the inlet manfold isn't an experience I want to repeat :eek: It's fairly easy though, as long as you're careful! :thumbup: Of course, removing the throttle body to check the inlet manifold gasket would allow you to kill two birds with one stone! :)

If your Scud has a coil pack like on my 1.3 98 model there is no leads (just one clip on lead to coil pack) and no distributor. However this is presuming that it is a 1.3. I am not sure how well you know your garage but i would ask some more questions as the symptoms you describe do point to the coil pack. One other simple check you could do is make sure that the earth point from the battery is a good un and not frayed or loose.

Another possibility is the Throttle body with air leaks. However this should show up with a diagnostic check. I would suggest that since you have spent so much at this garage trying to get things fixed that you make sure they fix the problem that they clearly haven't done with a proper diagnostic check for free

Try changing the temperature sender unit on top of the thermostat housing, this takes about ten seconds to do when the engine is cold (water will spill out if hot). A clip is all that holds it in.

Sounds strange I know, but after my mates R-reg Felicia had had £500 worth of investigation by the AA, a local garage and even a Skoda dealership, plus a new coil pack, ECU swap, clean of the throttle, new £25! Platinum spark plugs and a new crank positon sensor this simple sender was found to be at fault... can't claim the glory on this one as it was posted somewhere else on this forum (sorry can't remember who, but whoever it was is a genius!)

Lummox is the bloke, cheers mate, you saved me a pile of grief as I was about to go pay a fortune for a throttle valve!!

:) P reg would be 1.3 SPi.

When it isn't starting you need to establish wether or not there is a spark at the plugs. If there is, then I'd suggest looking at the fuel pump relay and possibly the pump itself.

Obviously if there is no spark you'll need to look again at the ignition system.:thumbup:

Garage man is small time and not very expensive - distributor cap was knackered I saw it and new one in situ so he wasnt conning us!

Cant plug in for diagnostic as he doesnt have the computers as he is independent.

Broke down fully and AA man came out and cleaned up the crank shaft sensor but reckoned it was pretty knackered and needed replaced - the cleaning definitely helped and it was fine for another 250 miles whilst garage has ordered part.

Dont know if this will fix the problem fully? My garage man was sceptical but he went and phoned someone who he knows works ina skoda garage and they reckoned it was common for these things to go at a similar time, so he seems happier that a new sensor might sole the problem, will mention the cold temp thingy though!

Oh he checked for a leak in the inlet thing and it was fine.
