actual MPG on VRS (petrol)

Featured Replies

I got 44.5 mpg on mine last summer. Going up the M1 between Dublin and Belfast. Never over 60mph, driving like a grandad, and aircon off :o:O:O

Found my 52 plate vrs regularly returns 400/420 on a tank of v-power, have found also that the fuel consumption is better around the 80mph mark than at 65/70. The worst I've seen is still a quite respectable 29 when having a play with an S-type V8 Jag at nearly twice the national speed limit (on private land of course)!

Is it best to use V-Power, Tesco super unleaded petrol etc rather than 95ron in the vrs?

Is it best to use V-Power, Tesco super unleaded petrol etc rather than 95ron in the vrs?

It's what VAG/Skoda recommend on the 1.8T

I definitely get better MPG on 98/99RON

Mine can drop to the low 20s when having fun (most of the time) but it is possible

to get 38 mpg if driven slow, but why have a vRS to do that?

My Vrs used to average 35 to 42mpg no matter how I drove which would be 300 - 320 miles to a tank, then I had to change the coolant sensor to the green one and now I only get 25 - 30mpg which is 260 - 280 miles to a tank, and in the morning on the way to work when I am late I can see 23mpg! It amazes me why there is so much variation between each 1.8t. I have always used SUL in either tesco or v power flavour and havent changed my driving style.

This may seem a bit obsessive but I've logged the petrol costs from when I first had the car and looked at the actual mileage against what the computer gives me. Generally the computer is about 5% high on the actual and 300 miles seems to be about the general range on a tank. Best runs on long motorway hauls...

I've attached a summary of the results!! (pdf file). Note I'm not to picky on the fuel type but generally use a super unleaded unless costs prohibit it! V Power / Optimax seems to give a better drive if not necessarily more miles....probably never used enough of it to get any real benefit.

I enjoyed looking at that. my records all all on bits of paper in my glove box but nothing like yours with the info.

I use V power in my mk1 octy vrs and it does give that little bit more mpg, but i havent weighed up the costs to see if its worth my while.

Is that an excel sheet, if so can you email it over to me, saves me making me one up myself.

Excellent pdf :) If I can get 320 miles or more per £40 fill then I'll be happy. That's very similar to what my Clio 172 achieves.

The original excel sheet if anyone wants it!

Nice one - thanks for that

I get around 35 mpg on average, but have got over 40. Thats doing motorway at 50mph. When leading it I get about 30mpg. Tank does anywhere between 300 - 400 miles.

The original excel sheet if anyone wants it!

Cheers for that.

Hi

Has anyone done a comparison between the computer figures and the actual MPG?

Reason for asking is that I do a 160 mile (all Mway) round trip about 3 times per week, sitting at about 70mph on cruise control. Over this distance and according to the computer, I'm averaging between 43-46mpg, which I find a bit unlikely.

I will do a fuel used verses miles done comparison next time I fill up, but just wondered has anyone already proved the computer to be in/accurate?

Cheers

Lance

Have now completed the 'manual' comparison, the results of which are below,

Round trip to work was 168 miles, of which at least 150 were on the motorway on cruise control at 70mph. The MPG comp said 46.3mpg on the way to work and 45.9 on the way back...........Brimming the tank took 17.26 litres of fuel which I worked out to be an actual MPG of 44.38.

Therefore the answer to my own question is that the computor is fairly accurate.

Oh, and I drive like a girl

p.baralos just looking at your pdf looks like i may see you around cardiff look out for the R reg mk1 octy rs

When i drive at constant 70 i get about 39-42 mpg, at 60 i have seen on many trips getting 43-45 and if my right foot gets heavy on short trips i see 23-25 mpg.

My overall computer for 2k travelled says 33.6 which is alright for a 6 mile trip to work and 6 back with a mixture of 30 zones and 80 zones in between

If i put fuel in as the the lamp comes on (say

Used my first tank of petrol in the vrs and I achieved 326 miles before the readout was at 0 miles remaining. To fill it up again with Tesco Super Unleaded cost

My diesel Octy 2 telles me I am doing 60 MPG but in fact I am getting 52.5.

I think that the fuel consumption for the petrol mk1 vrs is sh*te but oh boy is it fun to drive daily so who cares???

Zeroed mine today, over the last 1600 miles I’ve averaged 32.6 mpg.

I’ve checked the computer numerous times, and is always been about the same.

My last tank of petrol worked out at 30.1 mpg which is almost exactly the same as the onboard displayed figure.

  • 4 months later...

can anyone add if thier fuel consumption has actually got better after a remap?

also am I reading this right, but its actually cheaper to use super unleaded (

my fuel consuption got worse after the remap... because there was more temptation to hit the loud pedal...

but if you drive sensibly, yes it is either as good or better (esp if you get a boost controller to lower boost when you want to cruise, and up it when you want to play)

can anyone add if thier fuel consumption has actually got better after a remap?

So glad i'm not the only one with pants mpg. On a motorway run, I may not be too shy of 400 from a tank. Most of my driving day to day though is shorts spurts around town, and sometimes only get 260, which is nearly as bad as my T5 saloon.
