My Fabia vRS Questions

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A few quick Q's about my new vRS..... :D

1. Fuel gauge. Seems a bit erratic and sensitive to inclines. You think you're getting like 80mpg as it refuses to budge then it suddenly drops by 1/8th of a tank to make you realise you're only getting about 48.

Is it normal for it to drop in increments rather than gradually?

2. Rear brakes. Do anyone elses howl when reversing? Mine sound like a fog horn occasionally if I touch the rear brakes when reversing onto my drive.

3. Idle speed. What's everyone elses idle at? Mine's seems to be at about 950rpm hot or cold. Is this too high or is it normal?

4. Avon tyres. For some reason, the cheapskate who owned the car prior to me has replaced the front tyres with Avon ZZR thingies. Could these be the cause of all my road noise? The back seems ok on the Michelins though.....unless it's just my hearing. :)

5. 20k service. Looked through the service hist and at 20k the dealer only did a lube change, no air filter or anything else. Shouldn't they have done more at this?

This was at a dealer in Cardiff by the looks of it.

When I bought the car the dealer I got it off did the 30k service on it and that was only a lube change too. Does this mean I'm overdue an air filter and to drain the fuel filter?

That's all for now folks.

Anyone? These aren't hard questions....are they?

1. Yep perfectly normal.

2. Known issue often described as "mooing" brakes. Have a search, I think there was a fix out there :D

3. Sounds about right from what I remember - diesels seem to idle higher than petrols.

4. Could well be - switch them to the back of the car and see if the noise moves ;)

5. Air filter isn't changed til 40k, but not sure about the fuel filter. Car should have had an inspection service at 20k though so check to see if the box is ticked :D

1. The only thng that I've noticed is that the guage appears to drop quicker the nearer you get to an empty tank.

2. I've not had any noises/problems with the rear brakes.

3. Mine is about 950rpm. This is normal for the Euro3 engine, and the idle is a bit lower on the Euro4

4. I get quite a bit of road noise with contis. I think this is to be expected with any make of tyre.

5. The kind of service depends on how long since the previous service. If it was a yearly service then an inspection was also due. However if less than a year, then only a lube service could well have been correct.

Excellent. Thanks v muchly guys.

Not had Avon tyres on a car before. Are they any good? Blackkcircles rate them quite well.

Not pushed the car too hard yet so can't comment on grip etc.

Cant really add anything much to what has already been said, my experirnce has been.

1.- Fuel Gauge, Yes it does appear to move quickly once past the 1/2 tank.

2- Brakes, Only get this noise if car left standing for a couple of days, when weather is damp, and the suggestion for cleaning off the surface muck works.Search should find it.

3- Idle speed, yes Mine is approx 950RPM

4- Tyres, cannot comment on Conti's as i am running Toyo Proxies

5 - Service, My view is that the service schedule should be followed as shown in the book. I would ask dealer why it has not been followed.

Yeah the brakes don't do it all the time, only every now and again, but when they do it's LOUD. I mean it makes the car resonate when it happens.

As for the tyres, they're Avon ZZR things, not Conti's.

Air filter and fuel filter are 40k

Fuel filter drain at 20k, change at 40k (will probably change mine at 30k).

Air filter change at 40k - too long in my view. My vRS is March 04, 16k (had it a month now). Took air filter out and it was grey, some black. Had read to vacuum it - took ages. Wasn't satisfied so I went to local motor factors and got stung for

mine moos also in reverse. think its something to do with the caliper hangers resonating as you reverse. you can go to a skoda dealer and get some revised ones i think?

avon tyres are rubbish. i have always had either goodyear eagle f1 or margoni zeta linear. both are exellent tyres, both are expensive and dont last very long but they grip like hell and seem resonably quite.

mytyres.co.uk probably cheapest place for tyres - delivered to you or to fitting place of your choice. They also show owner's ratings of the tyres.

I've ordered Hankkok Ventus 205/45/16s -

Could this be done under warranty? It is slightly annoying.... :)

As for the tyres, I'll be shoving Toyo Proxes on there I think. People seem to rate them well and say that they're pretty quiet. Either that or Michelin Pilot Primacy's from Costco. Haven't decided yet.

Proxes are currently unavailable from mytyres - which is why I've gone for the Hankook. The Proxes come about even (or slightly ahead) of the Hankook.

BTW - read the handbook. Put it down.

Come back to it in few days and read it again - there's a lot to absorb.

Condensation / heavy misting - common fault from leaky door seals - mine had already had rear door resealed. Lots of threads about this.

And, you got silver, too. Best colour in my opinion - looks classy.

Touch up kit - Halfords

I can recommend the conti's they seem to grip well and last for ages (after 13,000 miles mine are around half worn). They came on the car, so I've no idea what they cost to replace.

I'd get the Sports over the Primacy's (and I think Costco sell both) :D Avoid Conti's imhe :D

hi Chris,

Sorry I've only got a 1.4mpi, well modifed though, so can't answer some of your questions but;

1. Fuel gauge - the needle will vary depending on the angle you are parked. However, the trip computer has a 'range' function - I run my car permenantly on this and never bother looking at the gauge itself. It can be quite fun seeing the miles worth of fuel going UP if your going gently up the Motorway having had a heavy spell in town.

4. Tyres - from past experience of Avons then can give a firm ride and extra noise, they are not particularly compliant. I have vRS 16" alloys on my 1.4 and run Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s which are excellent, having previously had Michelin Primacys. They are quiet, compliant (giving a soft ride) but with fantastic turn-in response and general grip. Grip is a good 20% better than the Primacys particularly in the wet.

Hope this helps.

i think it is covered by warrenty. the best dealer in our area is lightcliffe at halifax. its a bit of trek but well worth it. its also a vrs center and specilise in the vrs.

bought my car from them in december. so far no probs, spot on, even replaced wiper blades under warrenty! and fixed the leaking doors.

1. If you fill the tank right up, it will be 'overfull' and the level needs to drop a bit before the gauge registers.

2. Yes, everybody's does this. Do a search on 'mooing kit' for the part number to cure it.

3. Mine idles at 903 rpm.

4. I ditched my Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres because they were so noisy so your Avons must be truly awful!

5. There are two, superimposed, service cycles:

a) Every year, on its birthday, it gets an inspection service.

B) Every 10K miles it gets a lube service.

If you don't do an exact multiple of 10K a year, the two cycles get out of step.

HTH,

OOPS :o Must remember to read threads properly.

At least someone admits to getting things wrong sometimes.

I too have the 'mooing' sound. Dealers said it required a very straight forward rear brake modification, covered under warranty. Booked in for Saturday.

However i am a bit dubious as to whether it is the same problem as many others have had. Mine makes the noise almost all the time whether going forwards or in reverse, but not when braking. It appears to make a noise with each wheel revolution, and repeats quicker as i accelerate, until it becomes a continuous sound, eventually deafened out by the engine. Does this seem like the same problem?

Booked in for the mooing next Tuesday under warranty alongside the clunking front suspension at Pulleyns in York. Nice.

Not pushed the car too hard yet so can't comment on grip etc.

I have avon zz3's on the front of mine by choice, tried many , and the avons offer a good balance of grip/price, there are better tyres (goodyear excellence are pretty good, but twice the cost!(got them on the back) pirelli p-nero's I had were great, but only lasted 10k...) to be honest the tyre noise is irrelevant to me, I'm just interested in the grip, and it rains nearly all the time where I live, and the Avons are excellent in the very wet weather, I would replace with the same
