HGV Outside lane ban???

Featured Replies

Can anyone inform me of where i can find a copy in black and white of the new rules and regulations, which state that it is now an offense for an vehicle over 3.5 tonnes to travel in the outside lane.

I know this came into force on the 1st Jan 2007, but there seems to be nothing i can find on any of the offical transport websites, such as vosa etc.

I just need to send a link of this to someone who seems to think he can still drive in the outside lane, and i am just trying to warn him that he may get in trouble if caught!!!

Cheers,

Chris

I found this

Error 404 - Page Not Found

relating to speed limiters, but it goes without saying that a LGV or HGV travelling at 56mph shouldnt be in the outside lane.

This is good reading, but as you say, it is only about the speed limiters

As said, it is obvious they shouldn't be in the outside lane, but they still do!!

Hopefully someone will find something.

Me, my dad and my Brother in Law, have been searching for hours, and nothing is coming up.

Is this some new European rule, ie Brussles sticking their noses in again, making silly rules up because they have nothing better to do.

To be truthful, i dont know if it is European rule, or a UK rule???

I think it is just in the UK, as when i have been to most other countries, there drivers seem to know how to use roads, and pull back in, not blocking the outer lanes.

I remember when my old man used to drive a wagon. It was an old B reg Volvo caravan transporter, with no limiter. Took its time to get wound up, but we used to quite happilly sit in the outside lane unladen at 80MPH passing most other vehicles. Those were the days....

Is this of any use

28-12-06 Speed Limiter Legislation

specifically

Using the Outside Lane of a Motorway

If a vehicle has, or is required to have, a speed limiter fitted and working, then it is not permitted to use the outside lane of a three or more lane motorway. If the vehicle is required to have a speed limiter fitted but it is not working, it will be illegal to use it on the public highway under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

That is good, and answers a lot of the answers, but it does say if vehicles registered before 2001 can use the outside lane, it just says that a vehicle with a limiter has to stay out.

Can anyone answer this, as it is winding me up now??

Thanks for looking everyone,

Chris

Just to add you could pm euro truck spotter.

In all seriousness, my car has a speed limiter at 155mph, does that make me exempt from the middle lane?

The above says it does.

It might well do, but you would have thought that they would have updated the HC before the new rules and regualtions come out.

To me, this would make sense, so that people know where they stand.

Cheers,

Chris

Daz, I think the badge on the front of your car overrules that legislation :P:rofl:
