Does anyone know how to stop headlamp wash when only using sidelights?

Featured Replies

As per the title really.

I had a quick search throughout the forum but could not find anything.

So does anyone know if it's possible with VAG-com or by other means?

Mine does that and it annoys the hell out of me, I drive with my sidelights on most of the time and my washer fluid doesn't last long!

What about giving a quick dab of the stalk ie not pull them fully but just enough to get water onto window. I give it a couple of short squirts till I get enough water on the screen....seems to work.

When I remember I do that but when I forget it annoys me and also empties the washer bottle very quickly.

Even a dab on the stalk triggers the headlamp washers and they have a pre set duration.

Obviously this only happens the 1st and every 5th time but it canes the washer bottle.

I might get it sorted when it's in next week for warranty work.

When I say a dab, ya barely touch it, only a dribble comes out...hence the reason it needds to be done the first time.

I hate it when you have a nice clean dry car and you use the washers to clen the winscreen and it sprays the bonnet

I see what you mean but it nearly always fails and boof! off they go.

Either way, it is infuriating when it sprays the entire front half of the car

Give us a seperate headlight washer switch please.

If this is the case and the dealer can do it then maybe it is possible to scan before and after using VAG-com and see which bits have been changed.

Obviously that is pure speculation on my part but on the face of it wouldn't seem unreasonable. Perhaps someone can confirm if this is feasible or not.

A 'scan' wouldn't show it up. You'd need to know what they'd changed.

To me the operation seems to be different to the manual :)

My Mk.1 Octavia had headlight washers and only worked with the headlights on, not the sidelights.

I'll ask the question on Friday when my car is mended.

When I say "scan" that is my poor terminology.

I mean to dump all of the various parameters from the ecu into a text file or similar.

It doesn't really work like that mate.

You could take a rough guess at which controller might be changed and save the coding from a few of the obvious ones.

on a slightly different note, can the headlamp washers be switched off completely ?

Not looking forward to spring / summer water marks on freshly polished paintwork

The feed to activate the washers is on the back of the headlight switch. The terminal is marked "SRA".

Also, there are different wiper relays fitted depending on whether you have headlight washers fitted as well.

Some simple electrical tomfoolery should deactivate them.:)

Remove the fuse number 36, 20A (yellow one), in the cabin fuse box (not fuse box in engine compartment). In the manuals, it's described as "front light washer installation".

I've tested it few times with lights on, switching engine on and off to reset it and it doesn't wash the beams. Windshield is washed wih no problems. Also, no failure warnings on MaxiDot.

I guess this solves the problem, at least it did for me.
