Basic rules regarding a turbo engine

Featured Replies

Costco do 4l of 0w40 Mobil 1 for

£24 that's good!!!! do they sell it at the one at the end of the M56

when i start my car i normally wait five minuets or so before driving off, then i keep the rev's down to around 2k for the first ten to fifteen minuets before booting ,it i've had a few turbo'ed cars in the past when they where less reliable and i always did this

another question is would you recommend using slick 50 friction reducer i used to use this many moons ago can you still buy it ?

the principle is that it allows a small amount of heat into the oil to bring the viscosity down to aid flow before the engine gets loaded, also gives the oil pump drive an easier time when the rpm is then increased with normal driving. I doubt this is practically a significant issue with this particular engine, especially with modern low viscosity oils, but I have known situations in the past where oil pump drives have actually sheared due to the load of trying to pump cold thick oil too quickly  !

Thank you for your prompt reply. Briefly, that's it. As I said, won't hurt. :)

nooo please leave slick50 well alone!

just use a decent oil, if there is a reliable oil film on everything the so-called "friction reducer" will do nothing, but you will still have a pile of ptfe particles floating around the engine ready to block things up :)

i would have thought that idling for five miniutes is worse than just driving off. i was allways told to never let the engine idle for long periods

I start the engine, allow it to idle for 30 seconds to a minute and then drive off slowly. It's a common mistake for people to think that warm coolant means warm oil!

When turning off I allow a few miles of careful driving to cool down then allow 30 seconds for the turbo to spool down before switching off.

Just as the book says...

In the Dominican Republic we use a timer and when you turn off the car it keeps the motor running for about 1 or 2 minutes before turn the motor off

oops!!! think i've been leaving it idling to long by the sounds of it, think its only cos it takes ages to de mist the windscreen at the mo as its been -3 the past few nights

Same here, got no choice really.:thumbdwn:

I tend to leave it idling with de-mist on for the time it takes me to scrape the windows down (save the rear, leave that to the heater) so that's probably 2 mins min.

Mine takes a good while to demist oddly, probably at least 5 mins in this weather with aircon on full.

Hi btw fellow Liverpool person.

on the demisting front, I have to say that the screen heater is the most inefficient I've had on any car :(

IT'S WIRED, mine - with proper settings set on Climatronic - does change a full misted screen into a clear one in 3 minutes.

Righto Which Brand Do I Get Then? Mobil 1 Perhaps, As I Will Be Changing My Oil As Suggested Every 6k Or So, And Is There Any Specific Brand Of Oil Filter Or Do I Just Get One From A Dealer

Why are you wasting money like this? This oil (VW 503 00) is designed to be good for 30,000 miles or so. Why change it at 6? Even at variable service intervals of 18-20,000 miles there is plenty in hand for those petrified of "wearing their engines out". Spend your time driving it and the money saved not overchanging the oil can be spent on petrol to put in it!

think you may be right there morley!!!!!! think its a case of too much information my mini run on castrol slx longlife ,the oil was only changed twice in four years i think, and it was fine , i think if it needed the oil changing more frequentley skoda would say so ,if you have the cash though i don't see the harm in it

It all depends on if longlife oil used or not, but i think 10-15k min on longlife will be more than sufficient, I use Lucasoil 0w30 LL and will happily go past 15k between changes even though the car has been mildly tweeked. That what the oil is designed to do

Wasp nest stirred up here !!!!!

Final Conclusions on the Oil front next please.

pmsl @ 15-20-30k miles between oil changes

have you guys actually seen what your oil looks like when it comes out after that mileage?? i've just dropped mine out at 6.5K and it's plenty black enough..

A decent quality oil and filter change costs

Hi btw fellow Liverpool person.

Hello :) Well I say Liverpool, but I grew up in Formby (stands back for abuse!) Although as I had to buy my own house 8 years ago I moved to Thornton ;)

On the oil front, Mine was put onto variable service last service (55Kish) and I've not changed the oil since.. it is rather black when I check the levels though I must admit (I'm at 71K now) If it's
