personally it winds me up so much i drive to and from london everynight even at 2 or 3 in the morning you get them i just undertake as i am in the works van half the time they are doing 50-60 mph it just annoys me the fact that people are so ignorant i understand on some parts of the m4 and m6 as the tram lines can behorrible to drive in but most of the motorways i travel on dont have this problem

I've never had that problem either, but maybe that's just cos I rarely use Lane 1 due to all the trucks and MLOCers? ;)

I think coming up behind someone and flashing lights is sooooooooo rude and it would really get my back up and just to annoy them, I drive EVEN SLOWER:D

If I'm sat in lane 1 and end up undertaking a person in lane 2/3 going slower when there is a perfectly good gap to the inside of them which they should have pulled into, then I'm not going to swing out two lanes to sit behind them or pass them.

At the same time it would have to be an exceptional case for me to actively undertake people.

Typical case of the government going after the wrong people. Maybe they should compensate the lane hogger with tax payers money for the damage to their ego!

just think.... when we have these compulsary tracking devices fitted they will be able to tell what lane you are in too and send out fines

had to do it last Friday coming home from work , some oldish dear was in the outside lane of a dual carriageway for over 4 miles , i wasn't the first to undertake her and i wasn't the last , she had had plenty of oppotunities to pull in but didn't ,

i wouldn't of minded too much if the speed she was travelling was consistant , but it varied between 45 and 65 in a NSL :(

I have been in the situation before where i was travelling down the M1 lateish one night, dry clear night and i came across a bloke sat in the 3rd lane doing 60 ish, no traffic around him.

The nearest car to me was about 1/2 a mile behind and in front of him was bout a mile (more or less i couldnt actually see another car).

So i approached him from behind at about 70-75 ish, he still sat in the third lane so i pulled right across to the inside lane and undertook him with the middle lane free.

The guy never took the hint and procedded to sit there till the traffic that was behind me caught him up, then i lost track of which was him as it was just a bunch of headlights in the distance behind me.

When i get situations like this i dont really think about undertaking, I find it happens most on duel carrigways where i think there is a bit of snobbery on the part of the lane hogger generally. I try to give them ample opportunity to pull in and if they dont only then will i undertake. In the event of some1 using only the middle lane on a 3 lane carrigeway i will pull right across the back of them pass them then pull right across the front of them back to the inside i find this sometimes works to make them realise what they are doing.

I only undertake as a last resort & only if it is safe & possible without breaking the speed limit.

I agree that the government are targeting the wrong people, it is the idiots in a world of their own who need re-educating & if necessary prosecuting.

Due Care & Attention springs to mind ?

As said before this would eradicate the problem anyway.

Point raised by a mate in another forum - M25 variable speed limit. When this is in operation you are explicitly recommended to not change lanes, but to remain in your present lane and undertake when required. The variable speed limit can be applied at up to 60mph, so clearly 60mph can be regarded as "moving slowly" for HC purposes.

When I first started driving I hated to undertake, but gradually over the years its got to the point that the outside lane hoggers are becoming a pandemic. Coming home this morning I went past at least 5 cars on dual carriage ways that were sitting in the outside lane and just drifting along.

I used to prefer tailgating with headlights on (sorry to all the people this upsets) if someone was sitting in the outside lane, now, I don't even bother, just go past on the inside.

I dont mind undertaking at all if there is a need to do it, like the examples above..

what ****es me off is when your already doing over the speed limit and some **** sits on your bumper and before you have chance to pull in they are already trying to undertake you.. (mostly BMW/Audi drivers)

I do very occasionally undertake, but only after I've given the offending car a good amount of time and made it quite clear that I was there. Main reason I don't go straight in and undertake is because the driver simply might not be checking their mirrors very often, as such you suddenly go roaring down inside them and they probably won't be looking there . . . could be a nasty accident.

I will undertake after giving the lane hogging wa**er pelnty of warning, several flashes of the main beam and then I'll indicate, undertake, indicate and pull out again.

I'll only do it when they are really taking the pi$$ and refuse to pull over.

The only stumbling block is when the pillock suddenly susses he is holding everyone up and shoots into the next lane where you are now undertaking.

You wouldn't have a leg to stand on if you make contact.

I do untertake if necessary, but only after assessing the situation and deciding the driver is a tw*t rather than just not paying attention.

Was not pleased on the drive back from the meet at The Swan the other week. Quiet M6, just passed a car in L1, saw another a mile up the road, nothing in the mirror so I sat in L2 as I caught the next car. From out of nowhere comes a ****** in a rag-top doing well over a ton. Comes up behind in L2, sits on bumper for a bit, then into L1 and floors it to squeeze between me and the car I'm about to pass - maybe 15-20 metres gap between us. He then buggers off up the road staying in L2! W***ker.

Now I know I should really have moved back into L1 while I caught the second car, but there was nothing in my mirror I would inconvenience at the time, and I wasn't going slowly. At the time he did the undertake I was legitimately in L2. What was wrong with L3? Sigh.

I don't know why some folk stay in the fast lane and then just dawdle along, (its normally the older generation in my experience) and that is annoying, if you don't like to go fast, stay out of the fast lane! I have undertaken a lorry once, I was in the fast lane approaching the end of a motorway, staying in right lane as the motorway end only branches to either the left or the right, then some prat in a lorry came in front of me and did 50mph, bloody 50, so I undertook him:cool:

Yep. I have undertaken, and will continue to do so. I've even had occasion to do it in a 44 ton truck in the past.

As some have said, undertaking would be prevented by lane hoggers/drivers not paying attention being targetted for some education in lane discipline.

How many times, when you have been forced to undertake a vehicle, have you seen the driver obviously conducting a telephone conversation? Lots i tell thee. Tw@ts!!

Yep, I undertake, but only if the person in front has been given enough time and warning to pull over. In fact did so on the way home today, but it scares me each time - thinking the lunatic might pull in mid-maneuver :(

Yesterday some 4x4 came flying up to my **** and sat about 2 meters away with his right-hand indicator on. I was in the outside lane behind a van, car and lorry - trying to overtake a row of 'slower' lorries. Don't know what the guy was hoping to achieve - he didn't even go that fast once the road has cleared

I do it if the circumstances are correct, e.g. lane hogging and travelling significantly slower than the speed limit.

Even managed to do it today in a 1.2 furby  .

It's not something I do as a matter of course but if someone is holding me up then I will, regardless of whether it's legal or not (:finger: to that!)

Usually try and stay in the same lane for a while afterwards so it's not quite as obvious as undertaking and lane changing.

Agree with what others have said regards not having much comeback in the event of an accident though, which is why I make sure I'm 100% confident they aren't going to move.

Yep. I have undertaken, and will continue to do so. I've even had occasion to do it in a 44 ton truck in the past. !!

Not like you always have an option with a wagon, is it? I have been undertaken by a wagon once, but he was speeding in a 50mph limit, and we were nearing a M/way split where lanes 1 and 2 went left, and 3 to 5 went right, and I needed to go right where he was going left.

Today I had the opposite case, where somebody overtook in a down right dangerous situation.

I saw a slip road ahead and know it is fairly busy, as I approach it I can see a couple of cars, so pull out into the middle lane so they can merge easily as there is nobody behind me.

A van comes hammering up behind me, doesn't wait and overtake as there is a car passing me (bear in mind i am doing NSL), and instead cuting inside me at about 80 and hammers up the inside almost hitting a car that was merging.

Mucking Fuppet!

I agree with both Emily-Elizabeth and Devonutopia...the right hand indicator trick usually works a treat.

The other technique which I....I mean a friend of mine uses is to flash the headlights rhythmically as they approach the hogger, apparantly people usually **** their pants and get out of the way.
