The driving term not the job ;)

After watching TG, i think Jezza hit the nail on the head regarding undertaking other cars..

As far as im concered i will undertake if i need to.. not dangerously of course, but if theres enough space for me to undertake someone without changing down.. then theres enough space for them to pull over! - this kind of sitting in middle/outside lane is just lazy...

Theres nothing worse than being stuck behind a tw*t in the middle or outside lane with plenty of space to pull in.. im finding myself getting more aggressive in my driving in my older years too :o blatantly down to the stress of crap drivers

what are your views?

yep i do it....... not a second thought either..... it just highlights the fact that they shouldn't be there anyway

Same here, as jezza said last night "if there is enough room for you to undertake they shouldnt be in the centre / outside lane"

Definitely! But it does take some serious stubborn A-hole in the outside lane to drive me to this course of action. It usually comes after trying the indicator flashing.

As I understand the Highway code It's say's [can't remember the phrase ] but It's somthing like " If your lane is obstructed you may use another lane "....Therefor if the outside lane is obstructed be slower moving traffic, you may use another lane....No dout I'll be corrected....:o

if i am cruising down the inside lane and some tit is sat int he fast lane going nowhere i simply stay where i am and cruise down the inside. i don't make a big thing of it and weave through traffic though as thats bloody silly. i also don't change lanes to under take as thats completely different.

Yep, if someone is in the outside lane when they shouldn't be and there is space to undertake, then I do. It's over quickly anyway.

However I don't tailgate to get them out the way, I hate tailgaters, with passion.

Undertaking should be allowed to be done if there is some idiot in a *** or a **** that is in the way doing 35 in a 40mph and will not budge into the slower left hand lane. obviously the conditions have to be right

I get this.

If they are hogging the outside lane (and there is room in the middle and inside lane), then I just come up behind them with my right hand indicator on and they quickly move over. If they don't I might flash my lights a bit to makes sure they have noticed me. If they still don't move over then I go down the under taking route.

I'll give them a couple of quick flashes of the headlights just to let them know I'm there. Most of the times this wakes them up and they move over and then I'll thank them. Some of them move out again once they've let me past .... but that's neither here nor there for me :D

If they don't move over, I'll more than likely go for an undertake, making sure that they don't decide to pull back in once I disappear from their mirrors

Chris

I'll do it as a last resort only.

I don't have a problem doing it.

If like this weekend I'm on the M4 coming back to Swindon from Bristol, sat on the cruise @ 85 in lane1.....came across at least a dozen cars sat in lane2 when lane1 was completely empty I'm not going to move from 1 to 3 just to go past them:mad: .

Targeting undertakers is tackling the wrong problem. If they tackled lane hoggers then undertaking wouldn't be possible and the problem wouldn't exist, this would also increase traffic flow which would help with road congestion.

Personally, I find the quality of the road surface in lane 1 to be worse than the other lanes. Mainly due to the huge grooves worn in the modern anti-spray surfaces by articulated lorries. In wet weather, I can understand why people don't want to drive in lane 1.

Have to say I'll under-take if the need arises. I try to have rules about it, like not doing it where there's no space to the left of me etc... Mostly, though, I'll just maintain my pace in lane 1 until I find an obstruction.

J.

I will if it's safe to do so and the person refuses to move over. I also find I undertake sometimes by just being in the CORRECT lane.

Very, very rarely. I have done it in the past but it would need to be exceptional circumstances for me to do it now. Either the driver is unaware of your presence in which case they could quite easily decide to drift back to the inside line just as you decide to undertake , or they know full well you are there (especially if you've raced up behind like a lunatic flashing your lights) and could decide to block your undertake by moving back in. Is it really worth the risk ? At the end of the day, given the amount of traffic on the roads, you're unlikely to gain more than a couple of seconds anyway.

This is so true and it amazes me how many people cruise at 50mph a few feet behind a lorry that's chucking up tonnes of spray  In wet weather, I tend to hold lane 2 as the surface is better and there's less spray, but will move over if someone is approaching me quicker and want to get past.

If someone is hogging lane 2 on a 3 lane road, I would typically go from lane 1 to lane 3 and back to lane 1 as it's what the car in lane 2 will be expecting. If they suddenly see me going to undertake and decide that they shouldn't be in lane 2 as I'm going faster, then carnage is likely to ensue!

Chris

Well, according to J.C, everyone hogging the outside lane at slow speeds are child molesters so I might start taking down numberplates.......

and could decide to block your undertake by moving back in.

that's why the hard shoulder is there:D if they get lairy and try to block you just use the hard shouder:)

I hate lane hoggers but I have found since getting the Roadie I can't use lane 1 when it is badly grooved because I get thrown out of the lane if I don't follow the groove exactly :thumbdwn:

ISTR the HC saying something like "You may overtake on the inside when traffic is moving in queues" - no mention of how fast or how long a queue has to be.

242: Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions' date=' where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

[b']243:[/b] You MUST NOT use the hard shoulder for overtaking

I don't think one car going slower than you'd like would count as congestion :)

I don't think flashing the lights will aid progression past a vehicle in the outside lane....I'm sure it will progress road rage though...not the cleverest thing to do.

I actually agree with that, I never flash someone as I think it can be perceived as an aggressive action.

I would perceive a long flash to be agressive and a short flash to be a "here I am" type signal. Never had any issues with people getting upset and I always thank them afterwards :D
