List of everything to change at a cambelt swap

Featured Replies

Please. :)

Don't need part numbers just a little list of the bits that usually need changing at a cambelt change. Obviously the belt, but there's more than that I'm sure.

I need to know in the next couple of days please.

  1. Cambelt
  2. Auxilary belt
  3. Cambelt tensioners
  4. Waterpump

I'm fairly sure all but 4. come included in the cambelt kits? May be wrong and my mechanic has got some bits separately.

I think that's all I've had done, when I've needed it carried out on the Polo and Ibiza.

HTH,

Steve

Thanks. Waiting on the dealer to come back whether its cheaper to get a "kit" or get the parts separately. The vRS cambelt kits are on backorder apparently, but I need one in two weeks time at the VERY latest.... It's pretty essential to be honest. What is the auxilliary belt? I don't remember seeing one of those in the pd100 cambelt kit I had ages ago.

correct me if i am wrong but me thinks the aux belt is the big flat belt that drives the alterenator, power steering pump, aircon compressor etc?

Aux belt - runs all the auxiliary stuff, don't know any more! Sorry :D

How about just getting the kit from VW or Seat instead, or Audi for that matter? Surely the PD130 kits must be uniform across the group?? Or am I being too logical?

Steve

Maybe try this place if you're having a job getting parts (orders over

Nice one - It seems the kit which includes belt, tensioner, roller and a pair of nuts  :D is £79.20. + VAT

Still not sure on this auxilliary one though. The only other belt I am aware of is the one on the alternator which is attached to the aircon pump. I might be getting rid of all that anyway....

Still leaves the waterpump too - what are the chances of it needing doing now - at 40,000 miles, and is it likely to last to around 90k which is probably when I'll next do a cambelt swap?

Jason - you'll only need the one nut.

Think about it (-:

I am and I still don't get it. Been a long day I think. :o

From one nut to another ...............

Your post caught me inbetween editing the previous - did you see what I said about water pump etc (my opinion of course) ?

the pumps have been on back order for a while, I eventually sourced an audi one from Aberdeen , that was about 1-2 months ago

Well, I'm thinking the waterpump should be OK.... I can't wait 2 months though - Its 2 weeks, or it gets left for the next change. Timing is critical. I wouldn't actually be doing a cambelt swap, just the car is being tweaked a bit and I've been told it would be a good idea to do the belt at the same time. ;)

I'd always get it changed at cambelt time, just out of routine. I know they are a proven weakness on a few VAG engines, not sure about the PD130 units though?

Is it worth 'risking' for a comparatively small outlay? Discuss ;)

Steve

Jason,

I think you are tired - 1st you want a cambelt and then 'I wouldn't actually be doing a cambelt swap' and then 'been told it would be a good idea to do the belt as well'.

Anyways, my point is whilst they're doing the cambelt they'll be able to get at the water pump (which on its own to replace would be let's say

Jason,

Anyways, my point is whilst they're doing the cambelt they'll be able to get at the water pump (which on its own to replace would be let's say £100 for parts and labour). So for an extra £30 and a bit for labour I'd be inclined to have piece of mind and have the water pump done (especially from past experience).

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree:

For the sake of another £30 it's really false economy not to do the pump when doing the belt in my opinion. The plastic impellered VAG pumps were prone to failure (particularly on petrol engined models). I replace mine with metal impellered versions when doing the belts.:)

Also some say that the engine mounting bolts should be replaced as they are stretch bolts and can otherwise break, but I didn't bother & so far so good.

Similarly, I didn't bother replacing the auxiliary belt, I just gave it a thorough inspection for any signs of wear on the basis it's relatively easy enough to change if it breaks.

Jason, do the bloody water pump ffs. Look at WW_VRS - his went before 60k ffs.

I'll have a look around some of the motor factors in Exeter this morning. :) Fancy trying out the new GSF s well. :)

Jason I can get you a Gates timing kit (belt and tentioner) from barums. Gates is about the best you can buy.

Actually, hang fire until I find out what SMC are doing. :)

The genuine timing belt kit includes

Cambelt

Tensioner

Lower roller

Nut for the roller

Nut for the tensioner

Only need to change the ribbed belt if its cracking.

Of course i'd say only go for genuine, its the engine at stake.

Does £79.20 + VAT sound reasonable for a cambelt kit (genuine one) Part 038198119A. Now looking at under £140 for complete cambelt kit, water pump and the non-aircon V belt as per the other thread.

I'm on this VW Parts - Audi Parts website at the moment looking at other bits and bobs too. :)

Have asked the question. :) I still have my other checkout browser open too though. :D If I can get the kit from him for £85, that would be ideal. Hoping he can get a pump too.
