Removing the centre dash cubby hole?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been having a push, pull, and prod at the cubby hole beneath the head unit to try and figure out how to remove it. I have been pondering on fitting one of the DIN size 3 pod 52mm panels in the space, primarily so that I can install a boost gauge to keep an eye on the turbo pressure. Any ideas on how to get this out?

It doesn't serve me any use as a cubby hole anyway as anything I put in it flies out again when I hoof it :D

Cheers.

You need to take the stereo out first , then it just unclips.

You can force it out with the stereo in place but it's quite likely you'll break something

i took out my radio, and it was STILL a total bitch to get out. there are 2 pressure clips at either side, and i only had one feeler guage. so i pushed it in the right, and slid out out with ease, removed, and slid it into the left side. But it wouldn't come out because the whole cubby was at an angle. so i ended up just wiggling it alot, and hard, and it popped out eventually.

Yeah it's a bit of a bugger to get out!

That dash looks pretty cool RobClubley! Looks like you have an air/fuel mixture gauge and a boost gauge, but I cannot quite see what the 3rd is. How easy is it to wire in the other gauges? I really only need the boost gauge, but it'll look kinda silly with just one gauge. The angled 3 way gauge carrier looks the same as the one I was thinking of getting. Does this just clip in OK, or does it need to be butchered or bodged (for want of a better word) into place?

Cheers for the helpful replies.

The left-hand gauge is oil temp.

The carrier just clips in - no bodging at all :)

Have a look at my website Rob's Skoda vRS for more details on the connections for the gauges.

I've swapped the stereo and gauge panel around now so they're easier to see.

I just pulled mine really hard and in one movement and it came out undamaged. As the others have said it would be easier to remove the sterao first - it will help prevent damage and give you more access to get hold of the thing.

It also comes out a whole lot easier if you remove the trim that goes around the switches, stereo and cubbyhole.

Open the ashtray and grasp the trim from inside on the upper part of the ashtray where it runs under the climatronic / heating controls. Pull towards the gearstick gently and it should pull away. Keep going imagining that the section avove the switches is like a hinge, until clear of the switches and remove.

You can then get a small screwdriver down the side to release the catches.
