CTR & vRS - It's a draw!

Featured Replies

All I can go on is real life road experience. I have driven my current vRS with it's mods agaisnt a CTR and a ITR.

Like I said the CTR was left for dead on the dual carriage ways, with the same when we set off from roundabouts. The ITR is far more capable with the vRS only being around 2 car lengths ahead up to 70mph, then the vRS will move away with decent ease.

I have no reason to lie or make up stories as I don't rate the vRS in the same driving league as my old ITR, but I would rather a vRS over the CTR, probably because of the sheer difference in driving pleasure between the CTR and ITR, making it hard not too find faults in the CTR.

If any CTR's want to prove me wrong I will be more than happy to eat humble pie, I might even ask my mate if he fancies a video shootout on the local airstrip when they next open up for cars.

Im well gutted that you and your mate managed to get a cracking day out eh? sounds awesome..

As for the two cars the result does not surprice me, My VRS still shocks me when i floor it in 2nd and 3rd, the revs build fast and the speedo climbs fast, in these gears im not surprised you kept up with him easily enough on normal roads.

I myself had alittle spat with a CTR and left him in those gears, Im thinking by time his revs build to get the full potential out of the engine your pulling away, the CTR is a cracking car but I prefer my VRS for low down grunt in 2nd and 3rd not much touch's a turbo carin those gears especialy NA cars.

For a split second though. The Type R isn't in V-tech, then it might be a tad different, but when it hits its redline, and change gear , it's back in the V-tech zone. You really have to drive one to give a comment on it.

talking of real world performance, my old vectra v6 could easily keep up with any rep's diesel mondeo, passat etc. although i seem to recall after a sprint with my friend he got an average mpg of 32 from his 130tdi passat while during the 'race' my vec did me proud and achieved 8mpg:eek: still at least the old v6 soundtrack was top-notch, none of your diesel rattle/whoosh! and it was, at least, 0.2 seconds faster in every speed range, rock on!!!!!!!

My statement responded to the person who could 'leave a CTR for dead.' But as your too busy typing...

Giving constructive feedback sometimes takes a bit more effort...

Sorry if i touched a nerve... i'm not too hung up on my cars faster than yours.

Nice to see that Skinnyman has started an "interesting" debate... and that my driving is being called into question (quite rightly... I'm a wimp when it comes to aggressive driving!)

To paraphrase Skinnyman, it was a couple of mates out on a beautiful day driving in a "spirited" manner. One thing we both agreed on was that it's interesting that Honda and Skoda have achieved the same goal in two very different ways, in that they have both created cars that are fun to drive, but relatively sensible (I'm using a lot of artistic license when it comes to the CTR - if you've every driven one long distances you'll know what I mean) when they need to be.

It's a shame that it's taken us so long to have this drive, as the dealers are coming to take the CTR away next week, and the new Octy 4x4 should arrive early March... I'm going to miss the VTEC!

I look forward to posting more once I truly am a Skoda owner!

James.

I've driven on the roads between Whitby and Pickering and there are plenty of long straights to catch up on the gaps caused by the corners,

You should try driving those roads when there are no speed limits!!! Although being in a diesel focus made it interesting rather than exciting. I am looking forward to my driver training refresher course!

but watch out for lots of unmarked old bill!

Unmarked old bill? Whitby to Pickering? Think you must be mistaking regular cars for police cars!

You'll be lucky (or unlucky) to see 1 cop car out that way. That's no excuse for speeding though!

Problem with this sort of comparison is that there are too many variables . . . knowledge of the road, skill of the driver etc. etc.

Let me give an example of a similar test, my friend and I tested our cars, me in my standard Octy and him in his Seat Leon Cupra TDi. Over a 2 mile stretch of VERY twisty roads I managed to do the section in 2mins 7 seconds, he did it in 2 mins 9 seconds. Not for one minute to I believe that my Octy can seriously outhandle or outdo a Leon Cupra on the straights, but I still got the faster time . . . reason, I know the road better and *possibly* am the better driver.

Incidentally, this has been noted on C&F meets, my previous humble PD100 Fabia was quick enough on a lot of the roads, not because I'm a driving god or the Fabia has a magically amazing chassis () but because I knew the roads. Makes a massive difference IMO.

I knew the roads.

The most dangerous thing in the world that. Accidents happen when people begin to claim that they know the roads. Knowing that your car can take a bend at 50mph is fair enough but when that water main bursts just out of sight you're knackered.

It's a good measure of a poor driver when they claim to 'know the road.'

Unless you can see it you don't know it.

Look after yourselves......and each other

When do roads have no speed limit? Unless you mean when you dont get caught;)

Went from Pickering to Whitby last summer, got passed by some bloke really going for it (wife was driving - thats my excuse), loads of traffic being summer time, 30secs later large blue Volvo (dont remember which particular square box it was;) ) comes roaring up behind and switches on blue flashing lights - no where to go to get out of the way, missus panicking:eek: , finally gets passed, but when we get nearly into Sleights there it is in a layby with a marked bike and silly sod who was in a rush. On way back in the pm there was another in the same layby with a radar gun, so if I'm up there I keep my eyes peeled, but its still a great piece of road:D

I was driving from Thornton Dale to Scarborough and back last weekend and commented to my wife that we had seen at least into double figures of marked cars. Perhaps they were on a touring holiday?;)

I actually live in Norfolk where we see one a year but lots of mobile cameras at Christmas!

Roads have no speed limits when you're on a police driver training course! Exempt from 3 things whilst the blues and twos are going, speed limits, red traffic lights and keep left/right bollards.

And you sound like the most unlucky person in the world with regards police cars marked or otherwise. In North Yorkshire we are very thin on the ground. Usually one traffic car covering from the bridlington/scarborough border to scaling dam (50 miles north to south) and almost the same again east to west.

You maybe got caught in a planned operation in the summer however last weekend can be explained but not on a public forum!! The A170 will have been swamped. Usually you're pretty unlikely to see a traffic car outside of York and off the A64.

I test drove a CTR before buying my vRS, and yes the Honda felt a little quicker in power and cornering, but maybe in the real world the torque of the RS makes up some of the difference, great road that, I drive it often .

There were a fair few on the A64 last night. You weren't there were you? A crash on the Malton bypass was occupying their attention. It was interesting afterwards how a few people must have taken that as a green light to then drive off at high speed. I had the missus and baby in with me so playing wasn't on the cards, but a Bentley, Range Rover Sport and some big Merc Coupe all shot off at a great rate of knotts. They seemed to be having fun seeing who was the biggest and the best. I wonder who won...?

No, I was on duty but I'm not on traffic. The Scarborough car did get sent out to Malton though (again that shows how few traffic cars there are around).

And yeah unfortunately it's true that after seeing a few traffic cars there's probably not gonna be any more. But us regular bobbies can still stop cars and it can often be worse for you if I have to stop you. A traffic bobbie catches you speeding and he'll give you three points and a fine. I have no facility to monitor your speed so if I'm gonna take any action I have to find something else like careless/dangerous driving and I also have the power to breathalyse! That can often mean more points or larger fine. It's usually possible to find something even if it's just the inconvenience of a producer. Drivers don't seem to realise that sometimes.

Just me getting unlucky then and a bit of coincidence - I only come up your way about twice a year. No chance of speeding on the second time anyway, I was on the way to Scarborough Crematorium.

So much for a thread about a CTR and an Octavia vRS!!!!!!!

Yawn..................

Great 1st post though, wish i had been out driving some great roads in the sun.

It won't happen again as he is trading the CTR in this Thursday to be replaced with a new Octavia 4x4 which we'll go and collect at the beginning of March. End of an era for him and the start of a new Skoda owning experience.

on a loosly connected topic i went to see a NEW ctr on sunday.. you get better windows in a plane then you do in the back and the cabin is a bit cramped too. on the plus side though oh god its got a great driving position!

On the plus point you are the driver, sod your passengers :D:D

After reading through ALL these posts I must say, So what !! How Boring.

To settle the score, stand back to back, walk 10 paces, no 20, no 30, ah sod it keep walking !!

Funny thread this, but I have to agree that I don't think there'd be much in it in the real world on normal roads.

I test drove both an octy vrs and fabia vrs one morning, then drove the civic type s in the afternoon and finally drove the type r two days later and I was seriously unimpressed with both the honda's for power delivery.

There was no real kick up the backside, even when the v-tec came on and yes although I can't deny the speedo read quick speeds it didn't feel that fast to me, especially compared to my octy now.

It didn't help that the honda saleman was a complete c*ck and I didn't like the interior one bit but I still feel I absolutely got the right car in the end  .

Back where my wife's parents live there's a guy who was desperate to get a type r and was seriously peeved when I told him I was looking at one. He got a tatty looking 03 plate one about a month after I got my very tidy 54 plater (for the same money too!) and still doesn't seem to realise that he'd never get away from me on normal roads! Racetrack maybe a different story though but I didn't buy my car for the track.

This is also a guy who claimed to have hit 170mph in his car on public roads  somehow I don't think there's that much of a tailwind around there............:rofl: (even with speedo inaccuracies there's no way in hell it's gonna go that fast standard!)

Pity a couple of Strathclydes finest on the A80 last night didn't know that. In a marked BMW traffic car, headed up the outside lane when the inside lane was completely clear, doing well in excess of NSL. No blues and or twos. :thumbdwn::thumbdwn::thumbdwn:

I have to say a std ctr against a std vrs would beat it no buts the vrs will be better for in gear acceleration though.

I say this as my lady has a CTR std which by the way is 206hp after a day out with type-r-scotland forum last year on the dyno.

Anyway when my car had 201hp from exhaust/filter we went for it on a Straight road and my car was keeping up with the ctr thru 90mph but low down ctr pulled slightly due to 100kg lighter,

But when i went on a days run with type-r-scotland which was an awsome 300miles of grinning with excitment.

I was in a group of 5 CTRs of 6 groups up north around the lochs and single track roads ect.

My car was revo'd with bilstiens sports by this time and yes i pulled away from CTRs in a straight line but in the corners i found it very hard to keep up with std car in front, in fact it pulled away a lot and the ctr behind after speaking at lunch he said he was catching up on the corners but as soon as the apecs of the corner was straightning out i pulled away from him.

Basically the vrs modded can BEAT a CTR std but again its all down to the driver as the other 3 ctr were way behind us 3 at the front.

The ctr is so much more capable than the vrs in almost every way for Fast driving but not from relaxed driving, but they are marketed and designed for differant markets.

On another note the CTR just with a remapp and filter runs 225ish hp and with just a jackson supercharger and map 280+hp, there engines are so well engineered there as strong if not stronger beyond 300hp than the 20v unit.

It would be very interesting to see a 300hp Vrs against a s/charged CTR with the same compitent drivers??

I would say the CTR would still eclipse the rs maybe not by much but vag cars modded against CTRs modded to the same hp CTR every time
