VRS as a family car????

Featured Replies

Hi all, Please forgive the long post but I am slightly worried that i may have to change the Fabia Vrs for something bigger.

Our first baby is due in march and i am increasingly worried about the odd post i see on here where people have had to sell the fabia due to starting a family and not having room. Can i just ask if this is because the fabia really isn't at all suitable for a family car or it

I personally don't see why owning a Fabia with a new family of one child would be a problem, as long as you don't stick bass bins and the like in the boot. It's the biggest sized car in its class and is quite spacious, so it puzzles me why they sell it off when a baby comes in the picture.

Forget that mate, I can get the buggy as well as the missus's and little ones gear in the car without a problem. Boot is deceptivelly large :)

Mine has full leather but if you have your interior 'a-glazed' it should help you maintain a high standard if you need it. Don't panic and rush into changing mate, have the baby and get that wonderful experience under your belt then try the car and see how you get on.

We got rid of the Fabia because the boot is just about big enough for the weekly shop. Throw a buggy and change bag into the mix and you end up putting shopping on the back seat, etc which isn't ideal. If your relatives live a good distance away, you'll also need to be carting round moses baskets/travel cots, sterilisers, toys, etc, etc too and we can easily fill the boot on the Mondeo with baby stuff. It gets better as they get older though and we could probably survive with a Golf-sized car now :D

Hi bestyuk i have a little un age nearly 5 now and don't find the size of the a huge problem .The last two years we have driven down through France on holiday and everything including my golf clubs fitted in the car !!!! and even manage to cram more in for the return journey .....the wines and beers are sooo cheap :) .......as for the up keep of the interior i have a blanket were the young un sits and any soils which u are bound to get clean straight away... i thought about changing to a bigger car but to honest it seems fine and plenty big enough and of course i love it to bits

Thanks for all the advice.

I tried putting the silvercross 3d pram system in the boot and it did fit without the parcel shelf. However, nothing else was going to fit in there. And as pointed out above, i will need other bags, toys etc in there too. I don't think there is an immediate need to change the car but i can see me changing for a slightly larger model just to make life easier. Hopefully though fingers crossed it will all be ok and will stay put until i can afford the octy vrs, the boot in that thing is huge! The car had the supaguard applied to it so what with that and putting a cover over the rear seats, they should stay clean enough with little effort.

Thanks again

Our little one is now 5 months old, no probs with the car to date.

Prams do fit in the boot with the parcel shelf in place Quinny/Bugaboo, however, they are expensive. As well as the pram you can squeeze a fair amount into the boot if you organise yourself well enough.

I toyed with the idea of upgrading to an Audi estate but then thought hang on the VRS is 3 years old, has never let me down and can currently deal with a baby and all the necessary items - so why bother.

To summarise 1 baby

What's a "seat guard"? I guess I'll be needing one soon...!

I use mine this way and have no problem with the Fabia. The only thing to watch is that you get a pushchair that collapses well. From experience the current 'fashionable' 3 wheeler things with disc brakes don't fit in the Fabia (but then again they don't fit between the aisles of a lot of shops either).

I dont have many problems with the Polo. I wouldnt say its boot is any larger that a Fabia (plus its a bit of an odd shape) so i would think you would be just fine.

Stuff gets a bit less as they get older. Nt quite so much in the way of change bags etc to take with you.

Baby?

It depends what you are really talking about using the car for. We have the Octy and an Ibiza and the wife uses the Ibiza the whole time with our two kids without any real problems.

Main issues to consider are:

a) what type of pram / buggy are you going for? Some are enormous and would completely stuff you for space. We have always gone for the lightest /smallest ones and that gives you plenty of space left in an Ibiza/Fabia

B) Do you go on lots of long trips where you need to take lots of gear? If so then you need a bigger car. The Ibiza / Fabia is fine for day-to-day stuff but if you need gear etc for a holiday as well then you are going to be pushed - particularly if taking all the baby rubbish

c) How easy do you want it do be? You will be able to make do with a Ibiza / Fabia size car if you work at it but it will require better planning / longer to pack etc ... with an Octy you just chuck it all in :D

Why would anyone want to put a baby in the boot?

Oh no, the post above seriously suggests i should get an octy! I got the silvercross 3d pram system, its not massive but it doesn't fold down too well though.

I will have to see how it goes, but i don't want every day to be a struggle. This will need some thought. I may check out the 0% finance deals on the octy.

Thanks for the info. I have yet to get the other half a car so thats going to be another story altogether.

Get an Octavia vRS combi - you know you want one :)
