Why are American cars so crap?

Featured Replies

Dont forget that most of the American cars millege is done going from the Mc Donlads drive through to the Burger King Drive through, to The KFC drive through etc ect...

The last time I was over there in Florida, something called international drive. I watched a big V8 yank tank pull up, out popped more than 70 stone of family, they all got onto what I would called supermarket disabled electric scootas, which we have over here and of they went. There is even a holder for you Chicken Bucket and 3ltr coke cup on the front of it. Thats why they have to build these pointless Big and crude V8 engines, there fingers are to bloody fat to build something of persision

Gross

Merlin sounds better in a Mosquito than in a Spitfire, laregely cos you get 2 of them instead of one.

the engines in the mosi weren't the same as they shoe-horned into a spitfire, the spitfire would emit blue-ish flames from the exhuast at night because the pressure of the supercharger was wound right up, the mosi's which were used for night time flying/reconistance didn't want to be seen at night so they detuned them, also the left and right engines were totally different, because they span in oposite directions.... still an awesome sound tho:D

I know a man who has a american truck cab unit. It is low milage and good condition with only 1.2 million miles on the clock. Engine and gearbox rebuild can therfore be left for another 2.8 million miles!!!

Also remember having a trip round the Bridgend engine plant where they build the 4.2 V8 for Jags, the guy was telling us about his jag that would manage around 25mpg, yet going to the states, using the same spec car over there and it would only return 20mpg, apprently this is due to them having mush less strict machining tolerances.

Aren't American gallons smaller anyway?

The US Gallon is smaller than the Imperial gallon too , remember! Also there are some american cars I'd love to own (but will never afford) Pontiac GTO , Shelby Mustang Fastback , 56 Thunderbird , 58 Plymouth Fury 2 door , 57 Chevy Bel air 2 door sport coupe , 58 Edsel Citation convertible...I could go on....

Oh and on nice engine sounds , you can't beat a Napier-Deltic 2 stroke diesel engine , as used in the Railway locomotive of the same name, and in various fast motor patrol boats ie Hunt class minesweeper, US Navy 'Nasty' Class patrol boat....awesome!

I'm with you on the sound of the Deltic, you feel them as much as hear them

And people think the W engine is odd

Yanks think nothing of driving 50 miles to a Drive-In Movie, then 20 miles to a MacDonalds, then (mebbe) home.

Coupled with cheap fuel - it's all about reliability. Big lazy engines barely turning over that will go on for miles upon miles on roads that make few demands on suspension and engine.

Things are changing though - Global Warming issues are finally getting though to them i.e. downsizing, economy, emissions etc.

Americans buy cars and expect them to last forever. The only way to do this is by lazy engines and auto boxes.

But why is the build quality of some the yank tanks so carp though ?

Because they're cheap...

Rob.

There's a difference between poor build quality and poor materials - the materials are defo cheaper than European cars but as a result they also don't wear the same because they're all hard plastics etc.

Not necessarily; not all Mossies were light bombers, nightfighters or photo-recce machines. This is partly why not all Mossies ever had the flame suppressors on the exhausts.

The "version" with the opposite handed engine rotations was the Hornet (that or else getting thrust out of one prop on a Mossie must have been 'interesting' since the props were always same-spun).

Also IIRC Americans have a lower RON "standard" fuel at the pumps, which presumeably will hamper economy as well.

Or even better in a Lancaster or Shackleton - you get 4 :):):)

The sound of a Deltic.............here

Try the Lanc., the Spitfire & the Hurricane at very low level over S. Cheshire on a still Sunday morning, after having gone over on the Saturday. !!!

Years ago (late 60's) there used to be a Spitfire that flew low over Kidsgrove near Stoke - on - trent as a memoerial to RJ Mitchell who was born in that area.

The whole factory (about 5000) came to a stop to see / listen to that.

Just of the A500 (Tunstall turning, there is the R.J. Mitchel roundabout and on the embankments to it are 'concrete ' patterns of the Spitfire.

And of course the many of the merlin engines were built in Crewe RR now Bentley and VW owned.

Full circle I believe on that issue.

Or even better in a Lancaster or Shackleton - you get 4 :):):)

Mmm Lanc with four, sweet.

How bout an English Electric Lightning taking off, wicked:thumbup: .

Or a Vulcan, it will be quality when it flys again this year...

The sound of a Deltic.............here

Awesome! Good old number 19! And Fabia vRS owners think their exhausts are dirty?....thats a passable impersonation of a steam locomotive there!.... 'My Lords!'

PS the Deltic engine design is based on an aero engine IIRC , the one out of the Junkers JU88 Bomber.

Where did the American car thread go:confused::D

The Shackelton was powered by 4 Rolls-Royce Griffon engines.

The Vulcan will be at Waddington, and be even smokier that a Fabia vRS

Still no American cars?:(

I

I want the old old Camaro that looked like a Dodge Charger. Those are hot, and they sound like the dog's danglies or whatever you guys say :o
