new vRs - when to check oil levels / recommend oil ?

Featured Replies

Have only done 500km in my new vRS.

Checked the oil this morning when engine was cold and noticed it only came up to 2/3 of the way on the dip stick which means I can top it up. Should I instead be checking the oil once the engine has been warmed up and is at normal operating temps instead ?

Regarding the type of top up oil itself :

My car is set for variable service intervals from the factory according to the code on the inside cover of the manual (QG1), so I am I correct in assuming there is long life fully synth oil already in the sump. Assuming this and following the manuals instruction to not mix oil types I went out today and bought a 1 litre bottle of Castrol Edge which meets the 504.00 spec. Is this the correct oil ?

Regarding changing the oil at service time :

I plan on getting my car serviced every 15k km. Do mostly short journeys and no motorway miles, and generally I put up only 15k km every year. The garage said they use semi synth 10w40 oil which meets the 502.00 spec which is fine at oil change time. However I do not have alot of confidence after they told me to use this oil for top ups before my first service, after me telling them the car has fully synth oil in it from day 1 and you are not supposed to mix them. Their answer was they checked with Skoda HQ and they recommend only 10w40 oil !! They also did not know anything about how the car can be set for fixed or variable intervals. Morons. 3 queries with the service manager and still no call back. I also (and maybe I am paranoid) would not put it past a garage to just top up the oil instead of changing it at service time. For all these reasons, I am thinking that when service time comes around, I should change the computer myself to fixed intervals, and buy a 4.5 litre bottle of Castrol Edge 504.00 and make them use that ? I assume this oil is ok to use even if on a fixed schedule.

Check the oil when cold or if the engine is warm turn off at leave for 10 mins

1 litre bottle of Castrol Edge which meets the 504.00 spec. This is the correct stuff top up with this if you want to keep on variable.

If you do short journeys then I would hazard a guess that the service light will come on sooner than normal.

I think you can change from variable to fixed. If this is what you want to do then I would double check on the oil spec you will need. Of course you can still use the Castrol edge stuff on fixed but I think you could get away with a cheaper alternative.

I dont own an Octavia but my friend does so I know a little about them.

Thanks for the advice. I have no problem using the Castrol Edge 5W30 at service time every 15k km, even though it's overkill probably.

I just wonder how much of it to use when topping up as am nervous of overstepping the max. mark. The oil seems to be about 2/3 of the way up the dipsitck so it definitely could do with a topup , but no idea what that means in terms of how many litres it used. Book says put it in 0.5l a go, so I guess I will try that. Also, how much oil does the sump take on an oil change. 4.5l ?

I am breaking the car in gently and not going past 2/3 rpm of what each gear is capable of as per manuals instructions. And I have kept it under 3.5k rpm and generally not gone over 80km. I am guessing it's all this short 6-7km trips I am doing which is causing the oil to be used so quickly.

I would think the oil level was slightly down from the factory, they usually are so hasnt dropped that much.

Id go a touch less than half a litre and see how you get on.

Cheers mate.

swmbo as used approx 1.25 lts in 6000 miles so well worth regular checks.

Would I be right in saying that its approx 1 litre from Min to Max on the gauge. I hate utting oil in the car, always afraid I'll over fill it.

Good question.

I have no idea myself. Will top up tommorrow and try and gauge it from that.

If it were mine and it's only my opinion from reading some tips on running cars in, I'd keep the original factory fill oil in the car until at least 8,000 km preferably 16,000 km and definitely take it on some longer speedier runs and give it a few revs, not full bore but don't be shy. Also vary the revs rather than just sitting at 80 kph which must be a lot less than 3,500 revs in 6th. Otherwise you might end up with a car with a bit of a thirst for oil and not as brisk as it could be. Again, just what I've read from other people but people who know more than me! :)
